Structure Elucidation,Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Activities of a Halimane Isolated from Vellozia kolbekii Alves (Velloziaceae)

A new halimane diterpene was isolated from Vellozia kolbekii Alves (Velloziaceae) and identified as (5R,8R,9S,13R)‐halim‐1,10‐ene‐15,16‐diol ( 1 ). It showed cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines, SF‐295 (glioblastoma), MDA‐MB‐435 (melanoma), and HCT‐8 (colon adenocarcinoma). In the mechanism of cytotoxic action, halimane 1 interferes in two major phases of the cell cycle: in S phase, in which DNA synthesis occurs and where it is very sensitive to damage, and G2M phase which is the phase of preparation for mitosis and mitosis itself, showing apoptosis‐inducing properties. Antimicrobial activity towards Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria was studied and, against Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a MIC value of 0.025 μM was observed for halimane 1 , which is more active than the positive control chloramphenicol.     

Reproductive traits of the freshwater oyster Etheria elliptica (Bivalvia: Etheriidae) in the Pendjari River,Benin: implications for conservation

The African freshwater oyster Etheria elliptica, which is of great economic importance throughout the continent, is facing overharvesting in many fisheries in West Africa. Its reproductive traits (sex ratio, size at sexual maturity, oocyte diameter and fecundity) were studied at four stations located along the Pendjari River, northern Benin, in April 2013. Histological techniques were implemented to identify sex and gonad development stages. Oocyte sizes were measured based on the histological images and mean oocyte diameter was 38 µm. Fecundity, estimated by counting the developing eggs, averaged 106 724 eggs and increased significantly with shell size. The average sex ratio was approximately 1:1. Hermaphrodites were rare. Males reached sexual maturity at 57.6 mm dorsoventral height, earlier than females at 64.7 mm. The majority of the oyster specimens were in ripe-spawning stages, indicating that reproductive activities partly took place towards the end of the dry season. Both mature and immature individuals were subjected to harvesting at all the investigated fishing sites. The mean size of exploited oysters was 60.6 mm, lower than the size of females at maturity. Management strategies must enforce the minimum size of 65 mm required for harvesting, particularly in open access sites where juveniles are mostly harvested.     

Larvicidal and Nematicidal Activities of the Leaf Essential Oil of Croton regelianus

The chemical composition of the leaf essential oil of Croton regelianus collected from wild plants growing in two different sites at Ceará State (Brazil) was analyzed by GC/MS and GC‐FID. Twenty monoterpenoids, representing more than 96% of the chemical composition of the oils, were identified and quantified. The oils showed similar chemical composition but considerable variation in the levels of each constituent. Ascaridole (33.9–17.0%), p‐cymene (22.3–21.6%), and camphor (13.0–3.1%) were the predominant constituents. The monoterpene ascaridole was isolated and characterized by spectroscopic data. The essential oils and the isolated compounds were tested against Aedes aegypti and Artemia sp. larvae, and the root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. The bioassay results show that the essential oil of C. regelianus and ascaridole were moderately active against the M. incognita, but strongly effective against both A. aegypti and Artemia sp. larvae.
