Intact tropical forests are generally considered to be resistant to invasions by exotic species, although the shrub Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae) is highly invasive in tropical forests outside its native range. Release from natural enemies (e.g., herbivores and pathogens) contributes to C. hirta invasion success where native melastomes are absent, and here we examine the role of enemies when C. hirta co-occurs with native Melastomataceae species and associated herbivores and pathogens. We study 21 forest sites within agricultural landscapes in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, recording herbivory rates in C. hirta and related native Melastoma spp. plants along two 100-m transects per site that varied in canopy cover. Overall, we found evidence of enemy release; C. hirta had significantly lower herbivory (median occurrence of herbivory per plant = 79% of leaves per plant; median intensity of herbivory per leaf = 6% of leaf area) than native melastomes (93% and 20%, respectively). Herbivory on C. hirta increased when closer to native Melastoma plants with high herbivory damage, and in more shaded locations, and was associated with fewer reproductive organs on C. hirta. This suggests host-sharing by specialist Melastomataceae herbivores is occurring and may explain why invasion success of C. hirta is lower on Borneo than at locations without related native species present. Thus, natural enemy populations may provide a “biological control service” to suppress invasions of exotic species (i.e., biotic resistance). However, lower herbivory pressures in more open canopy locations may make highly degraded forests within these landscapes more susceptible to invasion.  相似文献

Fertilized stands of Pseudotsuga menziesii were found to have glaucous needles. We investigated the morphological and quantitative characteristics of the epicuticular waxes of needles of fertilized and control trees. Glaucousness was caused by ornate tubular epicuticular wax. Dipping needles in chloroform, which dissolves waxes, eliminated the glaucous appearance. Based on cryostage scanning electron microscopic observations, the epicuticular waxes in the nonstomatal region were much more ornate on the needles of the fertilized trees (experimental needles) than in unfertilized trees (control needles). The stomatal region in both experimental and control needles showed similarly ornate waxes. Quantities of waxes were similar in experimental and control needles. The glaucousness was not the result of greater quantities of wax; rather, fertilization altered wax morphology in the nonstomatal regions.  相似文献

Studies indicate that low birthweight (LBW) children display reduced deciduous tooth size but there is little information about permanent tooth size. It has also been shown that dental fluctuating asymmetry (FA) increases in response to various environmental influences, but the relationship between birthweight and FA remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare tooth size and asymmetry, according to birthweight, in the deciduous and permanent dentitions of a sample of Australian twins. The study sample comprised 436 twins, classified into 2 groups: normal birthweight (NBW > 2500 g) and low birthweight (LBW < or = 2500 g). For each individual it was generally possible to measure maximum mesiodistal crown diameters of both deciduous and permanent central incisors from serial dental models. Correlations were calculated between tooth-size variables and birthweight; subsequently comparisons of tooth size and FA were made between the LBW and NBW samples using Student's t tests. Small positive correlations (around .1) were noted between birthweight and tooth-size variables. There was no evidence of tooth-size reduction in the LBW male sample, but the LBW females displayed tooth-size reduction of approximately 2-3% for both deciduous and permanent incisors, compared to the NBW females. There was no evidence of increased FA in the LBW individuals of either sex. These findings indicate that developing teeth are generally well-protected from developmental disturbances during prenatal and perinatal periods. Further research is needed to clarify the biological basis of an apparently true but weak association between tooth size and birthweight.  相似文献

Although bycatch has been an acknowledged component of fishery management for many years, its explosive growth as a major management issue has occurred over the past decade. Emergence of the bycatch issue can be traced to increasing world competition for the ocean's fishery resources and the rapid rise of the conservation and environmental movement in recent years. Bycatch has in the past several years been equated to waste, non-selective fishing methods that threaten non-target species and degradation of ocean ecosystems. Although some important steps have been taken to abate bycatch, frequently the problem is not perceived as a component of fishery management, e.g. establishing bycatch mortality rates and evaluating their consequences upon affected populations. Fishery scientists often estimate levels of bycatch, but the overall consequences of discard mortality resulting from the complex of fisheries operating in a region are frequently unknown and speculative. The sum of fishery-induced mortalities occurring as a result of harvesting often involves a significant number of fish in addition to catch and discard. An ICES study group has characterized fishing mortality as the aggregate of all catch mortalities including discard, illegal fishing and misreporting. It is unlikely that managers will, in the near future, have a full accounting of unobserved fishing mortality. Progress toward identifying and measuring such mortalities is receiving increasing attention.The authors suggest and provide an example of a matrix-type analysis for recording bycatch and other fishing mortalities. The matrix presentation would allow managers to evaluate various fishery-related mortality factors and their importance in developing management strategies.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a contraceptive method for feral horses. The feral horse population has increased significantly in recent years despite attempts to control numbers. As in most wild animal population control programs, contraceptive methods must be easy to apply, cause minimal disruption to the social structure and be fully reversible. In the present study, we tested the effectiveness of an intrauterine device (IUD) for fertility control in mares. Six mares were fitted with a silastic O-ring-shaped IUD on July 1 of Year 1. The IUD-treated mares were turned out with 12 nontreated mares and a fertile stallion in a large pasture until October 20 (112 d). None of the IUD-treated mares and all the nontreated mares became pregnant. The IUD-treated mares were maintained separately from the stallion during the winter. Following removal of the IUD on April 27 of Year 2, the mares were again introduced to the pasture with the stallion together with 6 nontreated mares. For the 6 mares previously treated with an IUD, the mean interval from introduction to the stallion to conception was 17.5 +/- 5 d or 1.3 cycles per pregnancy, and all mares produced a normal foal at term. Subsequently, 19 recorded mare breeding seasons resulted in 18 foals. Uterine cytology and histopathology indicate that the IUD causes mild chronic endometritis without permanent changes in the endometrium. We conclude that based on our observations, the O-ring-shaped IUD is an effective, safe and practical contraceptive method for mares.  相似文献

Regulatory T-helper (Th) cells have been categorized into two functional subsets, Th1 and Th2 cells, which produce distinct lymphokines. In general, Th1 cells mediate cellular immune responses and Th2 cells mediate humoral immunity. Recent serological studies suggest that the Th1-Th2 balance may be relevant in acute and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of the nucleocapsid antigens (Ags) (hepatitis B core and e Ags [HBc/eAg]) of HBV to preferentially elicit either a Th1 or a Th2 dominant response. For this purpose, H-2 congenic B10.S and B10 mice were immunized with HBc/eAg, and Ag-specific T-cell proliferative responses, T-cell helper function, and T-cell cytokine production were analyzed. The results indicated that B10.S mice preferentially develop a Th1-like response whereas B10 mice preferentially develop a Th2-like response after immunization with HBc/eAg. Furthermore, the preferential Th1 and Th2 response patterns were reproduced when 12-residue peptides representing the dominant HBc/eAg-specific T-cell sites for B10.S (peptide 120-131) and B10 (peptide 129-140) mice were used as immunogens. Therefore, the combination of the T-cell site recognized and the major histocompatibility complex restricting element can in large part determine the Th phenotype of the HBc/eAg-specific T-cell response. Other factors that influenced Th phenotype were the presence of exogenous cytokines, Ag structure, and tissue distribution.  相似文献

Temporary feeding on willow buds and leaves by nesting greater snow geese provided us with an opportunity to test the relative importance of nutrients and deterrents in affecting the palatability for geese of a food plant with a high phenol content. Protein, total phenol and fiber (neutral and acid detergent fiber, and lignin) were analyzed in closed and open buds and in rolled and open leaves. Geese feed on willows at the open-buds and rolled-leaf stages but not at the closed-bud and open-leaf stages. Protein content was higher in open buds and rolled leaves (25–27%) than in closed buds and open leaves (19–21%). Phenol content increased during leaf emergence but was already high (14%) in rolled leaves. All plant fibers were very high in closed buds but declined rapidly during leaf emergence. The increase in phenol: protein ratio appeared to be more important than phenol concentration alone in explaining the cessation of feeding by geese on willow leaves whereas the high fiber content of closed buds may explain why they were not eaten. Our results illustrate the value of a multifactorial approach in the study of the food selection process in herbivores.  相似文献

Polyethylene glycol was used to induce water stress of micropropagated Valiant grape. Reduced growth and slow rooting were observed in treated plantlets with 2, 4 and 6% polyethylene glycol as compared to control plantlets with no polyethylene glycol in the rooting medium. At high concentrations of 4 and 6%, leaves exhibited wilting and necrosis. At the 2% level, plantlets recovered and grew satisfactorily. Detached leaves of treated plantlets with 2% polyethylene glycol lost less water than controls when exposed to low humidity for 4 hours. Leaf anatomy of plantlets treated with 2% polyethylene glycol, control (in vitro plantlets) and greenhouse-grown plants were compared under light microscopy. Leaves from control plantlets contained larger mesophyll cells, lacked normal palisade layer formation, had greater intercellular pore spaces and fewer chloroplasts. Leaves from polyethylene glycol-treated plantlets, however, had smaller mesophyll cells, a more defined palisade layer, reduced intercellular pore space and the greatest number of chloroplasts. In previous studies, tobacco protoplasts were transformed with the bacterial gene encoding neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPT II). Transformed calluses lost neomycin phosphotransferase II activity after several subcultures. Treatment of calluses with 5-azacytidine, a demethylating agent, restored enzyme activity, suggesting that methylation of npt II sequences might be responsible for loss of NPT II activity. Studies presented here were designed to test that hypothesis. Results indicated that the effect of 5-azacytidine could not be blocked by the DNA replication inhibitor, hydroxyurea, nor by the 5-azacytidine analogue, cytidine as would be expected with a DNA demethylation mechanism. The level of NPT II mRNA was not increased by 5-azacytidine. Treatment with cycloheximide, a protein synthesis inhibitor, had no effect on 5-azacytidine-increased NPT II activity. There was no increase of NPT II protein caused by 5-azacytidine, whereas 5-azacytidine increased activity of NPT II. In contrast, the auxin 2,4-D increased both the NPT II protein and activity. Assays for malate dehydrogenase demonstrated that the effect of 5-azacytidine and hydroxyurea on NPT II was not due to an overall effect on callus metabolism. In vitro studies involving standard bacterial NPT II enzyme and crude extracts from untreated and 5-azacytidine- or hydroxyurea-treated calluses showed that the activity of NPT II added to the untreated extracts was lower than the activity of NPT II added to the extracts from calluses treated with 5-azacytidine or hydroxyurea, indicating that there was an unknown factor (or factors) in callus extracts which affected the activity of NPT II and itself was affected by 5-azacytidine and hydroxyurea treatment.
