Schwannomas of the peroneal nerves: Clinical and functional results of surgical treatment

Objectives:Peroneal nerves Schwannomas are rare benign tumors. Literature is still poor of studies about clinical and functional outcomes after surgical treatment. We evaluated the pre-operative presentation of the disease and assessed clinical and functional outcomes after surgery.Methods:We collected all the cases of peroneal nerves’ neurinoma treated surgically between June 2016 and June 2020. We analyzed each patients’ personal data and carried out accurate clinical examinations before and after surgery. MRI was performed both pre-operatively and post-operatively.Results:We reported 9 cases of peroneal nerves schwannomas: five arising from the common peroneal nerve and four arising from the deep or superficial branches alone. Their mean size was 22.6 mm. Each patient showed sensation deficits before surgery; pre-operative MRC score was 4.2. Pre-Operative MSTS and LEFS scores were 23.6 and 64.4. Surgery was successful in each case. No local recurrence nor major complication occurred. Tumor size was significantly associated with both diagnostic delay and development of pre-operative deficits. Surgery was proven to be globally successful: post-operative evaluations highlighted a marked reduction of neurological signs and overall functional limitations.Conclusions:Surgical treatment at early stages of the disease represents a reliable and relatively safe therapeutic option.     

Discrimination between extreme chronotypes using the full and reduced version of the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire

The aim of this study was to carry out a comparison of the ability to discriminate between extreme chronotypes, i.e., morning- and evening-types, among the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and its reduced version (rMEQ). To this end a secondary analysis of cohort studies, using two different approaches, was carried out. The first, subjective, relied on the computing of overlap between extreme chronotypes according to their hourly ideal bedtime, get-up time and midpoint of sleep reported at the MEQ and rMEQ, while the second, objective, on the corresponding actual-actigraphic times. At the subjective approach, 2706 participants filled in the MEQ, while 940 the rMEQ (age range of both groups: 18–30 years). The overlap was significantly lower among those who filled the rMEQ than MEQ when considering ideal midpoint of sleep (13.70% and 46.28%, respectively) and get-up time (47.04% and 62.34%, respectively). At the objective approach, 51 participants filled in the MEQ while 52 the rMEQ (age range: 19–30 years in both groups) at the end of one week of actigraphic recording. No significantly different overlap across those who filled the MEQ or rMEQ was observed with reference to the examined actigraphic times. Results of subjective assessment showed as rMEQ more clearly discriminated between extreme chronotypes than MEQ. The attempt to find an objective confirmation did not provide the same results, probably as a consequence of a masking effect by social rhythms.     

Enhanced nisin and pediocin production on whey supplemented with different nitrogen sources

Production of nisin and pediocin were followed, respectively, in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis CECT 539 and Pediococcus acidilactici NRRL B-5627 grown with lactose and four different nitrogen sources. Neither NH₄Cl nor glycine improved production of the bacteriocins. Both yeast extract and Casitone increased pediocin production from 55 BU ml^–1 to 195 BU ml^–1 and 185 BU ml^–1, respectively. Nisin increased from 21 BU ml^–1 to 74 BU ml^–1 and 59 BU ml^–1 with these nitrogen sources.     

Effect of enzyme inducers on metabolism of 1-nitropyrene in human hepatoma cell line HepG2.

We measured the response of HepG2 cells to the classic cytochrome (cyt.) P-450 inducers 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) and phenobarbital (PB), by evaluating oxidative and/or reductive metabolism of the nitroarenes, 1-NP and 1,6-dinitropyrene (1,6-DNP), in control and induced cells. In HepG2 cells, 3-MC induces ring-hydroxylation of 1-NP, whereas PB stimulates its nitroreduction. PB induces NADPH-cyt. c reductase, but does not affect other cytosolic and microsomal enzymes which contribute to 1-NP nitroreduction in these cells. However, PB-inducible nitroreductase activity seems to be associated primarily with cyt. P-450 isoenzymatic form(s), as indicated by the requirement for NADPH and the response to specific inhibitors such as alpha-naphthoflavone and CO.     

β-Amino acid residues: Conformational characterization of an N- and C-protected homo-β-(S)-leucine

Summary An N- and C-protected derivative ofhomo-β-leucine, Fmoc-homo-β-(S)-leucine methyl ester, synthesized from the corresponding proteinogenic parent α-amino acid in enantiopure form has been fully characterized in the solid state by X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal conformation of this new residue indicates and extended conformation for thishomo-β-residue, with the ϕ torsion angle being more constrained than the μ and ψ angles.     

Design-based mapping of tree attributes by 3P sampling

The estimation of individual values (marks) in a finite population of units (e.g., trees) scattered onto a survey region is considered under 3P sampling. For each unit, the mark is estimated by means of an inverse distance weighting interpolator. Conditions ensuring the design-based consistency of maps are considered under 3P sampling. A computationally simple mean squared error estimator is adopted. Because 3P sampling involves the prediction of marks for each unit in the population, prediction errors rather than marks can be interpolated. Then, marks are estimated by the predictions plus the interpolated errors. If predictions are good, prediction errors are more smoothed than raw marks so that the procedure is likely to better meet consistency requirements. The purpose of this paper is to provide theoretical and empirical evidence on the effectiveness of the interpolation based on prediction errors to prove that the proposed strategy is a tool of general validity for mapping forest stands.
