Résumé Le squelette vertébral de l'Anguille est formé d'os cellulaire: lamellaire compact ou spongieux, suivant les différentes parties de la vertèbre. Nous avons pu y mettre en évidence, chez des animaux physiologiquement normaux, les trois catégories de cellules caractéristiques de l'os des vertébrés supérieurs: ostéoblastes, osteocytes, ostéoclastes. Elles ont les mêmes fonctions que chez ces derniers, les ostéoblastes procèdent à l'élaboration du tissu osseux, alors que les ostéoclastes le détruisent; à cette résorption ostéoclastique s'ajoute une lyse périostéocytaire ou résorption périlacunaire. Les osteocytes, dans ce tissu, nous paraissent être des éléments actifs; néanmoins, leur nombre (par unité de surface) est très inférieur à celui trouvé chez les Mammifères. Le remaniement osseux résultant du jeu de l'apposition et de la résorption est important et comparable à celui existant chez l'Homme.L'os de l'Anguille est, à de nombreux points de vue, très voisin de celui des Mammifères; les Poissons n'ont pas de parathyroïdes en tant que telles mais ils sont pourvus d'autres glandes vraisemblablement impliquées dans la régulation phosphocalcique: corps ultimobranchial et corpuscules de Stannius. Notre but sera donc d'essayer de déterminer comment est réglé le métabolisme de l'os cellulaire des Téléostéens.
Histologic study on teleost cellular bone I.
Summary The vertebral skeleton of the eel consists of cellular bone, either lamellar or spongy, depending on different parts of the vertebra. In this osseous tissue we have found, in physiologically normal animals, three categories of caracteristic cells of the bone of higher vertebrates: osteoblasts, osteocytes, osteoclasts. They have the same functions as in higher vertebrates, osteoblasts form the bone while the osteoclasts which are to be found in Howship's lacunae destroy it. In addition, a perilacunar type of bone resorption or osteocytic osteolysis can be observed. In this bone, osteocytes seem to be active cells, but the concentration of osteocytes is decidedly lower than that to be found in Mammals.The osseous remodeling produced by apposition and resorption is of the same importance as in human bone. The bone of the eel, in many ways, closely resembles that of mammals. Teleost fish do not have parathyroid glands, but their phosphocalcic regulation seems to be facilitated by the action of two endocrine glands: Ultimobranchial body and the corpuscles of Stannius.The regulation of the cellular bone metabolism of Teleostean fishes is discussed.

Cell membranes of the yeast Candida utilis isolated by lysis of protoplasts have been shown to be lipoprotein in nature. Electron microscopy shows that Mg++ is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the membrane. A close serological relationship was found between membranes and cell walls isolated from the yeast. This relationship was exhibited not only by membranes obtained by strepzyme treatment but also by those obtained from the action of helicase enzyme. No such relationship existed between membranes and whole cells. Related data have been obtained by treatment of yeasts with different digestive enzymes. All of the results suggest that the protoplast membrane possesses traces of structural cell wall material. This material is detectable by serological tests, but not by electron microscopy. 相似文献

At the University Hospital, Saskatoon, over the last three years, pacemakers have been inserted in 40 patients with complete or incomplete heart block. Fourteen of the patients were females and 26 were males. The average age was 65 years; 12 were over 80 years of age, and the youngest patient was 8 years of age. In none was the heart block due to operation. Thirty-three patients are still alive and well. There have been seven deaths three early and four late. One patient died because of a “runaway” pacemaker, and two as a result of infection persisting around the pacemaker. Twenty-nine Medtronic pacemakers were used and 14 Atricor pacemakers; currently we favour the latter instrument. 相似文献

Activated neutrophils cause extensive DNA damage in neighboring nonphagocytic cells. To determine whether compounds in the extracellular milieu participate in the DNA damage process, murine neutrophils were cocultivated with target tumor cells in media of varying composition. Using the alkaline elution assay, it was found that the level of strand breaks induced was significantly higher (2.8-fold) in complex cell culture media than in minimal phosphate-buffered saline. Addition of amino acids in general and of histidine in particular increased the level of damage nearly to that observed in complete media (2.7- and 2.1-fold, respectively). The histidine stimulation was concentration-dependent and reached a maximum at 100-400 microM. The mechanism whereby this occurred is not proven but probably derived from chelation of metals and participation in a site-specific Fenton reaction. Addition of the cell-impermeable chelator EDTA dramatically inhibited induction of strand breaks by neutrophils in complete media and prevented the enhancement of damage induced by histidine in phosphate-buffered saline. None of the effects on neutrophil-induced damage could be attributed to modulation of the oxidative burst activity of the cells (O2- and H2O2 production). Histidine also enhanced induction of strand breaks by reagent H2O2. However, EDTA had no effect or actually increased the level of damage induced by both a bolus of H2O2 and a flux of H2O2 generated by glucose oxidase. The cell-permeable chelator o-phenanthroline inhibited both neutrophil- and H2O2-induced damage. The results indicate that secondary reactions involving extracellular amino acids and metals contribute significantly to neutrophil-induced DNA damage to neighboring cells. Moreover, the data show that the mechanism whereby neutrophils induce this damage cannot be attributed solely to secretion of H2O2. 相似文献

Summary We test the hypothesis that body size and population density of the deposit-feeding gastropod, Hydrobia truncata, are greater in muddy than in sandy habitats as a result of faster growth on fine- compared to coarse-grained sediments. We refute this hypothesis using a combination of field measurements and laboratory experiments. Three out of three populations tested had higher maximal growth rates and two of three populations approached their asymptotic size more quickly on sand than on silt-clay fractions of natural sediment. Growth decreased with increasing snail density and was as high or higher on sand as on silt-clay at all densities. Two populations were more fecund on sand than on silt-clay, and fecundity of the third population was not affected by sediment type. We show that the smaller body sizes observed in snails from the sandiest habitat result from late recruitment of these snails, relative to the other populations. 相似文献

Herein we report the results of the first major prospective study directly comparing aneuploidy detection by fluorescence in situ hybridization of interphase nuclei with the results obtained by cytogenetic analysis. We constructed probes derived from specific subregions of human chromosomes 21, 18, 13, X, and Y that give a single copy-like signal when used in conjunction with suppression hybridization. A total of 526 independent amniotic fluid samples were analyzed in a blind fashion. All five probes were analyzed on 117 samples, while subsets of these five probes were used on the remaining samples (because of insufficient sample size), for a total of over 900 autosomal hybridization reactions and over 400 sex chromosome hybridization reactions. In this blind series, 21 of 21 abnormal samples were correctly identified. The remaining samples were correctly classified as disomic for these five chromosomes. The combination of chromosome-specific probe sets composed primarily of cosmid contigs and optimized hybridization/detection allowed accurate chromosome enumeration in uncultured human amniotic fluid cells, consistent with the results obtained by traditional cytogenetic analysis. 相似文献

Sulphate accumulates in the rhizosphere of plants grown in hydroponic systems. To avoid such sulphate accumulation and promote the use of environmentally sound hydroponic systems, we examined the effects of four sulphate concentrations (0.1, 5,2, 10.4 and 20.8 m M ) on photosynthesis, ribulose-l,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco, EC 4.1.1.39) activities and related physiological processes in greenhouse–grown tomato plants ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Trust). The lowest sulphate concentration (0.1 m M ) significantly decreased photosynthetic capacity (Pc ) and Rubisco activities on a leaf area basis. This result was supported by our data for dry matter per plant, which was low for plants in the 0.1 m M treatment. The photosynthesis-related variables such as leaf conductance, chlorophyll and soluble protein were lowest for the 0.1 m M treatment. Both total Rubisco activity and the activated ratio were reduced with this treatment. However, Rubisco activities expressed per g of protein or per g of chlorophyll were not significantly affected. These results suggest that sulphur deficiency depressed Pc – by reducing the amount of both Rubisco and chlorophyll and by causing an inactivation of Rubisco. The ratio of organic sulphur vs organic nitrogen (S/N) in plants of the 0.1 m M treatment was far below the normal values. This low S/N ratio might be accountable for the negative effect of low sulphate on Pc and plant growth. Pc and dry matter were not affected until sulphate concentration in the nutrient solution reached a high level of 20.8 m M . 相似文献
