Nowadays, safety and quality assessment of food used for human consumption have to consider by its possible contribution to the maintenance or improvement of the consumer''s health. Milk is an important food with many nutrients. Cow milk is an important source of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals for the growing child as well as adults. But, numerous cow milk proteins have been implicated in allergic responses and most of these have been shown to contain multiple allergic epitopes. The present study disclosed best alternatives to cow milk, which are not allergic and as good as cow milk in nutritional value. The in silico analysis of casein (alpha s1, alpha s2, beta and kappa) and beta-lactoglobulin, unveils that sheep milk is a more suitable alternate to cow milk for allergic infants and buffalo milk for allergic adult humans.  相似文献

The tricorn protease is an archaeal protease that forms massive proteasome-like capsids with a hollow chamber. beta-Propeller and PDZ domains are thought to play a role in substrate selection. By analysis of predicted proteins from novel bacterial genome sequences, we have identified four new bacterial tricorn-like proteases, complete with similar beta-propeller, PDZ and catalytic domains. We propose various hypotheses as to the function of these domains that can now be tested in the laboratory.  相似文献

It is known that females prefer males with larger and/or brighter orange spots in many populations of the guppy Poecilia reticulata. However, female preference for male orange spots varies among populations and changes within several years when they are introduced into new habitats with different environment. Guppies were introduced into Okinawa, Japan, more than 20 years ago and were subjected to natural and sexual selection for a long period. The female preference for orange spot patterns of males was examined by the dichotomous choice experiment for a feral guppy population of the Hiji River, Okinawa. We chose full-sibling males as a pair of stimulus males that were simultaneously presented to a test female, because sibling males should resemble each other. To create different orange spot patterns between stimulus males, one male of the stimulus male pair was fed carotenoid-supplement food such as algae and another male was fed low-carotenoid food. High-carotenoid-treatment males showed not only brighter coloration of orange spots but also larger spots than other males as a result of this dietary-manipulation. In the dichotomous choice experiment, females preferred the high-carotenoid-treatment males. In addition, logistic regression analysis clarified that brighter coloration of male orange spots was the most important factor for female mate preference. This finding suggests indirect benefits of female preference for male orange spot patterns if the male foraging ability for algae were heritable.  相似文献

Astringency of aqueous solutions of phenolic compounds (grape seed tannins, tannic acid, catechin and gallic acid) increased upon addition of citric acid, whereas the astringency of alum was reduced. Astringency of alum was decreased equivalently by addition of equi-sour levels of lactic acid, citric acid or hydrochloric acid. The difference between alum and the phenolic compounds is speculated to result from chemical modifications affecting binding of the astringents with oral proteins rather than cognitive differences. Chelation of the aluminum ion in alum by acids reduces its availability for interacting with salivary proteins or epithelial proteins. In contrast, the increased astringency produced upon acidification of phenolic compounds is speculated to result from the pH driven increase in the affinity of the phenols for binding with proteins. These results suggest that alum cannot be used interchangeably with phenolic astringents in psychophysical studies.   相似文献

Long-term ethanol exposure is known to inhibit bradykinin-stimulated phosphoinositide hydrolysis in cultures of neuroblastoma x glioma 108-15 cells. In the present study, [3H]bradykinin binding, GTP-binding protein function, and phospholipase C activity were assayed in cells grown for 4 days in 100 mM ethanol with the aim of elucidating the molecular target of ethanol on signal transduction coupled to inositol trisphosphate and diacylglycerol formation. Ethanol exposure reduced guanosine 5'-O-(3-thiotriphosphate) [GTP(S)]- and, to a lesser extent, NaF/AlCl3-stimulated phosphoinositide hydrolysis, whereas it had no effect on the enzymatic activity of a phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate-specific phospholipase C. [3H]Bradykinin binding in the absence of GTP(S) was not influenced by ethanol exposure. However, the reduction in [3H]bradykinin binding seen in control cells after addition of GTP analogue was inhibited in cells grown in ethanol-containing medium. The results indicate that long-term ethanol exposure exerts its effects on receptor-stimulated phosphoinositide hydrolysis primarily at the level of the GTP-binding protein.  相似文献

Predation on brown hares and pheasants in relation to their production was examined in an open field area in southern Sweden. Biomass and numbers of hares and pheasants eaten by the predators were calculated from data on food habits, food requirements, and numbers of the mammalian and avian predators present (11 species). At the same time estimates of numbers and production of hares and pheasants were obtained. At least 40% of the estimated annual production of hares and almost 60% of subadult-adult pheasants in autumn were consumed by the predators. Estimated numbers of hares and pheasants taken by the predators greatly exceeded shooting and road mortality. Foxes and cats were the predominant predators on hares (about 90% of total hare consumption). Foxes accounted for about two-thirds of predation on pheasants; cats and goshawks were of secondary importance. Pheasant nests were preyed upon by hooded crows and also by badgers. Hares and pheasants contributed only about 3 and 1%, respectively, of the food of the predators.  相似文献

The antibacterial activities of a number of amide derivatives of penicillin against both penicillin-sensitive and penicillin-resistant cultures were determined. Several of them were found to possess significant inhibitory activity against certain gram-positive bacteria. The amides, although resistant to the destructive action of beta-lactamase, did not protect G in competitive experiments. One derivative, the O-benzylhydroxamide of penicillin G, was active against six or eight penicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (minimal inhibitory concentration, 0.2 mug/ml or less), but was found to have only a minimal in vivo activity against mouse Streptococcus infections.  相似文献

Previous studies of high-risk breast cancer families have proposed that two major breast cancer-susceptibility genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, may account for at least two-thirds of all hereditary breast cancer. We have screened index cases from 106 Scandinavian (mainly southern Swedish) breast cancer and breast-ovarian cancer families for germ-line mutations in all coding exons of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, using the protein-truncation test, SSCP analysis, or direct sequencing. A total of 24 families exhibited 11 different BRCA1 mutations, whereas 11 different BRCA2 mutations were detected in 12 families, of which 3 contained cases of male breast cancer. One BRCA2 mutation, 4486delG, was found in two families of the present study and, in a separate study, also in breast tumors from three unrelated males with unknown family history, suggesting that at least one BRCA2 founder mutation exists in the Scandinavian population. We report 1 novel BRCA1 mutation, eight additional cases of 4 BRCA1 mutations described elsewhere, and 11 novel BRCA2 mutations (9 frameshift deletions and 2 nonsense mutations), of which all are predicted to cause premature truncation of the translated products. The relatively low frequency of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in the present study could be explained by insufficient screening sensitivity to the location of mutations in uncharacterized regulatory regions, the analysis of phenocopies, or, most likely, within predisposed families, additional uncharacterized BRCA genes.  相似文献

The rates of decay of the electron adducts of thymine, thymidylic acid and of uracil at pH approximately 8-5 and at wave-lengths of 340 or 350 nm in the presence of t-butanol as scavenger for OH radicals are not influenced significantly by the addition of 0-1 M NaClO4. It follows that the decay reactions do not take place between negatively-charged species. The best explanation seems to be an efficient reaction of the electron adducts with the t-butanol radicals formed by reaction of OH radicals with the t-butanol.  相似文献
