An interspecific backcross linkage map of mouse chromosome 8

We have established a 67-cM molecular genetic linkage map of mouse chromosome 8 by interspecific backcross analysis. Genes that were mapped in this study include Act-6, Aprt, Aprt-ps1, Emv-2, Es-N, Hp, Insr, Mt-1, Plat, Psx-8, Ucp, and Zfp-4. New regions of homology were established between mouse chromosome 8 and human chromosomes 8 and 19. A conserved linkage group was identified between mouse chromosome 8 and human chromosome 16. The map will be useful for establishing linkage of other markers to mouse chromosome 8.     

THE BINDING OF TRIETHYLTIN TO RAT BRAIN MYELIN

—A high affinity binding site for triethyltin was found in rat brain myelin with an affinity of approx 6·6 × 10⁵m ⁻¹ at pH 7·5. Competitive binding studies showed that triethyl-lcad had about the same affinity and trimethyltin 30 times lower affinity than triethyltin. Hexachlorophane and 3,5-diiodo-4′-chlorosalicylanilide did not prevent triethyltin binding to rat brain myelin. Since triethyltin, hexachlorophane and 3,5-diiodo-4′-chlorosalicylanilide all produce similar oedematous lesions in the brain of rats, whereas triethyl-lead and trimethyltin do not, it is concluded that the high affinity triethyltin binding site either is not involved or is not the only factor in oedema production.     

The interaction of triethyltin with a component of guinea-pig liver supernatant. Evidence for histidine in the binding sites

A protein fraction was isolated from guinea-pig liver that binds triethyltin with an affinity of approx. 2x10(6)m(-1) at pH8.0. It was shown that the protein responsible for binding 70% of the triethyltin found in guinea-pig liver after injection of radioactively labelled triethyltin is at most a few per cent of the total liver protein. Evidence is presented from the kinetics of loss of binding and loss of certain amino acids on photo-oxidation with either Methylene Blue or Rose Bengal that each binding site consists of two histidine residues.     

Morphologic Evaluation of Acute Endometritis in Mares with Differing Resistance to Uterine Infections

The study was designed to determine differences between normal mares and mares with endometrial pathology in the inflammatory response after bacterial challenge. Six normal mares (biopsy category I) and 4 mares with pathological endometrial changes (biopsy category II) were given an intrauterine infusion of β-hemolytic streptococci on the second day of estrus. All mares had a similar kind of inflammatory response after the bacterial inoculation as assessed by rectal and vaginal examinations. There were no significant differences in the amount of discharge, uterine tone, uterine size and cervical relaxation between the groups. Leukocytic response, as determined by endometrial smears and biopsies, was of the same magnitude in both groups. Two mares from the pathological group were not able to eliminate the infection, but had vaginal discharge and bacteriologically positive uterine swabs until the end of the experiment. It is concluded that the inability of some mares to clear uterine infections cannot be explained by a deficient inflammatory response.     

Complex lipids of Caldariella acidophila,a thermoacidophile archaebacterium

Isoprenoid ether lipids are common to the ‘urkingdom’ archaebacteria, within which members of the Caldariella group of extreme thermoacidophiles and some methanogenic species have lipids based on macrocyclic tetraethers containing two 16,16′-biphytanyl chains. As a step towards closer classification, the complex lipids of Caldariella acidophila have been more fully characterized.     

THE ORGANIZATION AND OPERATION OF A STUDY OF DIARRHEAL DISEASE IN FRESNO COUNTY

The procedures used in the organization and operation of a special study on diarrheal diseases involving federal, state, and local agencies are outlined. The integration of such a project into a local routine program is discussed and the possible benefits derived by the various agencies are briefly evaluated.
