Compared to non-flying nest-dwelling ectoparasites, the biology of most species of flying ectoparasites and its potential impact on avian hosts is poorly known and rarely, if ever, reported. In this study we explore for the first time the factors that may affect biting midge (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and black fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) abundances in the nest cavity of a bird, the hole-nesting blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus, and report their effects on adults and nestlings during reproduction. The abundance of biting midges was positively associated with nest mass, parental provisioning effort and abundance of blowflies and black flies, while negatively associated with nestling condition. Furthermore, a medication treatment to reduce blood parasitaemias in adult birds revealed that biting midges were more abundant in nests of females whose blood parasitaemias were experimentally reduced. This finding would be in accordance with these insect vectors attacking preferentially uninfected or less infected hosts to increase their own survival. The abundance of black flies in the population was lower than that of biting midges and increased in nests with later hatching dates. No significant effect of black fly abundance on adult or nestling condition was detected. Blood-sucking flying insects may impose specific, particular selection pressures on their hosts and more research is needed to better understand these host–parasite associations.  相似文献

It has been proposed that blue–green egg colouration in certain avian species has evolved as a signal of female and egg quality to males, affecting their investment in the brood according to the differential allocation scenario. A recent experiment has successfully manipulated male investment by placing dummy eggs simulating the extremes in the blue–green natural reflectance. Here we have substituted one egg in certain pied flycatcher clutches with a single deep‐blue (blue) or light‐blue (pale) dummy egg and used other clutches as controls. Blue dummy eggs reflected more in the blue–green part of the spectrum than natural and pale dummy eggs, which were similar in reflectance. Nestlings in nests with one blue dummy egg during laying and incubation attained a significantly higher mass and condition than those in nests with one pale dummy egg or in control broods, when controlling for phenology, brood size and blue–green chroma of the clutch. Only a shift in parental investment can have induced this highly significant effect. Preference for deeply coloured clutches associated with high‐quality females and their maternal effects may explain stimulation by a single supernormal stimulus emanating from multiple objects like clutches.  相似文献

The presence of truth and honesty is a permanent demand, and becomes vital the more committed and intimate a relationship is. Medical practice is relevant to this discussion when one questions whether or not a physician should always tell their patient the truth in the face of a progressive or potentially fatal disease, regarding their diagnosis, outcome, therapy and evolution of the specific disease. From this discussion we aim, with the present report, to look at the truth applicable to the patient-physician relationship, and its ethical and moral implications; and also to look at where the Brazilian Code of Medical Ethics (BCME) and the medical literature stand regarding this issue. One concludes that there are only two moments not to tell a patient the truth: when the patient does not want to be informed, and when the truth could be iatrogenic. The question now is, when would the truth be iatrogenic? Physicians, in our opinion, would not be able to judge solitarily when the truth might be deleterious to their patient. Alternatively, we proposed the appointment of a multidisciplinary commission to help the doctor with such a decision.  相似文献

Clostridium difficile is an emerging enteropathogen responsible for pseudomembranous colitis in humans and diarrhoea in several domestic and wild animal species. Despite its known importance, there are few studies aboutC. difficile polymerase chain reaction (PCR) ribotypes in Brazil and the actual knowledge is restricted to studies on human isolates. The aim of the study was therefore to compare C. difficileribotypes isolated from humans and animals in Brazil. Seventy-six C. difficile strains isolated from humans (n = 25), dogs (n = 23), piglets (n = 12), foals (n = 7), calves (n = 7), one cat, and one manned wolf were distributed into 24 different PCR ribotypes. Among toxigenic strains, PCR ribotypes 014/020 and 106 were the most common, accounting for 14 (18.4%) and eight (10.5%) samples, respectively. Fourteen different PCR ribotypes were detected among human isolates, nine of them have also been identified in at least one animal species. PCR ribotype 027 was not detected, whereas 078 were found only in foals. This data suggests a high diversity of PCR ribotypes in humans and animals in Brazil and support the discussion of C. difficile as a zoonotic pathogen.  相似文献

Adverse effects promoted by inadequate manganese (Mn) supply (deficiency or toxicity) causes inefficiency of the antioxidant system and degradation of chlorophylls. However, 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) is a natural steroid that exhibits beneficial effects on antioxidant metabolism, chlorophyll levels and stress indicators. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate whether EBR application via spray can alleviate oxidative stress in soybean plants exposed to different Mn concentrations and to determine possible contributions of the antioxidant enzymes and photosynthetic pigments. Experiment followed a completely randomized factorial design with two concentrations of 24-epibrassinolide (0 and 100 nM EBR, described as − EBR and + EBR, respectively) and three Mn doses (0.25, 25 and 2500 µM Mn, described as low, control and high supply of Mn, respectively). Plants treated with low and high concentrations of Mn + EBR exhibit significant increases in all enzymes evaluated (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase). To superoxide dismutase (SOD), EBR spray promoted increments of 77%, 38% and 76% under low, control and high Mn supplementation, respectively, compared to same treatment in absence of EBR. Clearly intense activity is linked to SOD contributed by dismutation of superoxide into hydrogen peroxide, being subsequently decomposed by other enzymes (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase). Concomitantly, plants with Mn deficiency and toxicity sprayed with 100 nM EBR presented maintenance of chlorophylls and carotenoids due to reduction of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide and consequently reduced chloroplast membrane damages as indicated by malondialdehyde levels and electrolyte leakage.

The disparity in species richness among evolutionary lineages is one of the oldest and most intriguing issues in evolutionary biology. Although geographical factors have been traditionally thought to promote speciation, recent studies have underscored the importance of ecological interactions as one of the main drivers of diversification. Here, we test if differences in species richness of closely related lineages match predictions based on the concept of density-dependent diversification. As radiation progresses, ecological niche-space would become increasingly saturated, resulting in fewer opportunities for speciation. To assess this hypothesis, we tested whether reef fish niche shifts toward usage of low-quality food resources (i.e. relatively low energy/protein per unit mass), such as algae, detritus, sponges and corals are accompanied by rapid net diversification. Using available molecular information, we reconstructed phylogenies of four major reef fish clades (Acanthuroidei, Chaetodontidae, Labridae and Pomacentridae) to estimate the timing of radiations of their subclades. We found that the evolution of species-rich clades was associated with a switch to low quality food in three of the four clades analyzed, which is consistent with a density-dependent model of diversification. We suggest that ecological opportunity may play an important role in understanding the diversification of reef-fish lineages.  相似文献

For sexual selection to operate in monogamous species, males of poor quality in some factor like age, ornamentation, condition or aggressiveness, should lose paternity compared with higher quality males. We tested this idea in an Iberian population of pied flycatchers ( Ficedula hypoleuca ). Microsatellite analysis of 67 broods revealed moderate levels of extra-pair paternity (22.4% of broods, 7.5% of young). In a sample of 58 broods for which the caring male was identified, a higher paternity loss was associated with younger males, males that were less aggressive during territorial intrusion tests performed before the commencement of laying, and with males that showed higher levels of corticosterone metabolites in faecal samples collected at the end of the nestling period. Plumage darkness, forehead patch size and condition were not related to paternity loss. Paternity loss is more related to behavioural or physiological traits than to morphological ones in this population.  相似文献
