Although Conraua goliath is well known as the largest living frog species, the diversity and evolution of the genus Conraua across sub-Saharan Africa remain poorly understood. We present multilocus phylogenetic analyses of the six currently recognized species that provide insights into divergence times, biogeography, body size evolution and undescribed species. An analysis of divergence times demonstrates that crown-group Conraua arose some time during the latest Oligocene to mid-Miocene followed by divergence into major lineages in the mid-Miocene that may reflect the fragmentation of widespread tropical forests in Africa that began at this time. We find three pairs of sister species, C. crassipes + C. beccarii, C. alleni + C. derooi and C. goliath + C. robusta, each of which diverged during the Miocene. These relationships reject phylogenetic hypotheses based solely on biogeography as the geographically peripheral C. beccarii from north-eastern Africa is nested within western African species and the Central African species do not form a clade. Our species delimitation analyses provide support for undescribed species in C. alleni, C. beccarii and C. derooi, and possibly C. crassipes, suggesting that the current taxonomy substantially underestimates species diversity. There is no clear directional trend of either increasing or decreasing body size in Conraua and the three largest species do not form a clade. With a robust phylogenetic hypothesis in hand, further field-based studies are needed to understand the evolution of morphology and life history in this charismatic African anuran clade. 相似文献

The southeastern border of the European Alps is not well resourced with high-resolution climate proxies and experiences a
distinct climatic regime from the northern and western Alpine zones. Here, we present new high-resolution climatic proxies
(AD 1907–2006) from ring widths and stable carbon (δ13C), non-exchangeable hydrogen (δ2H) and oxygen (δ18O) isotope ratios of cellulose extracted from Larix decidua tree rings, growing at the forest limit in the southeastern European Alps (Slovenia). δ13C, δ2H and δ18O are strongly (p < 0.001) and positively correlated with each other. June temperature has the strongest control on tree ring width (TRW),
while later summer conditions (July–August) influence the stable isotope composition. All four proxies are strongly correlated
(r > 0.4; p < 0.001) with summer temperature and also sunshine hours, while precipitation has less impact. A combination of TRW and δ13C provides the greatest potential for reconstructing past temperatures (June–August) with significant (p < 0.001) correlations with gridded temperatures extending across a very large part of southern and western Europe west of
the Carpathian Mountains. The water isotopes (oxygen and hydrogen) record conditions in the Adriatic and Mediterranean, which
are the source area for the air masses that bring precipitation to this region giving strong correlations with temperatures
in southern Italy and the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. Combining proxies with different spatial and temporal signals
allows the strength and spatial footprint of climate signals to be enhanced. These findings open new perspectives for climate

A proxy rainfall record for northeastern South Africa based on carbon isotope analysis of four baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) trees shows centennial and decadal scale variability over the last 1,000 years. The record is in good agreement with a 200-year tree ring record from Zimbabwe, and it indicates the existence of a rainfall dipole between the summer and winter rainfall areas of South Africa. The wettest period was c. AD 1075 in the Medieval Warm Period, and the driest periods were c. AD 1635, c. AD 1695 and c. AD1805 during the Little Ice Age. Decadal-scale variability suggests that the rainfall forcing mechanisms are a complex interaction between proximal and distal factors. Periods of higher rainfall are significantly associated with lower sea-surface temperatures in the Agulhas Current core region and a negative Dipole Moment Index in the Indian Ocean. The correlation between rainfall and the El Niño/Southern Oscillation Index is non-static. Wetter conditions are associated with predominantly El Niño conditions over most of the record, but since about AD 1970 this relationship inverted and wet conditions are currently associated with la Nina conditions. The effect of both proximal and distal oceanic influences are insufficient to explain the rainfall regime shift between the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age, and the evidence suggests that this was the result of a northward shift of the subtropical westerlies rather than a southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. 相似文献

Habitat destruction and fragmentation are increasing globally, forcing surviving species into small, isolated populations. Isolated populations typically experience heightened inbreeding risk and associated inbreeding depression and population decline; although individuals in these populations may mitigate these risks through inbreeding avoidance strategies. For koalas, as dietary specialists already under threat in the northern parts of their range, increased habitat fragmentation and associated inbreeding costs are of great conservation concern. Koalas are known to display passive inbreeding avoidance through sex‐biased dispersal, although population isolation will reduce dispersal pathways. We tested whether free‐ranging koalas display active inbreeding avoidance behaviours. We used VHF tracking data, parentage reconstruction, and veterinary examination results to test whether free‐ranging female koalas avoid mating with (a) more closely related males; and (b) males infected with sexually transmitted Chlamydia pecorum. We found no evidence that female koalas avoid mating with relatively more related available mates. In fact, as the relatedness of potential mates increases, so did inbreeding events. We also found no evidence that female koalas can avoid mating with males infected with C. pecorum. The absence of active inbreeding avoidance mechanisms in koalas is concerning from a conservation perspective, as small, isolated populations may be at even higher risk of inbreeding depression than expected. At risk koala populations may require urgent conservation interventions to augment gene flow and reduce inbreeding risks. Similarly, if koalas are not avoiding mating with individuals with chlamydial disease, populations may be at higher risk from disease than anticipated, further impacting population viability. 相似文献

Highly diverse microbial assemblages colonize plant roots. It is still poorly understood whether different members of this root microbiome act synergistically by supplying different services (for example, different limiting nutrients) to plants and plant communities. In order to test this, we manipulated the presence of two widespread plant root symbionts, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and nitrogen-fixing rhizobia bacteria in model grassland communities established in axenic microcosms. Here, we demonstrate that both symbionts complement each other resulting in increased plant diversity, enhanced seedling recruitment and improved nutrient acquisition compared with a single symbiont situation. Legume seedlings obtained up to 15-fold higher productivity if they formed an association with both symbionts, opposed to productivity they reached with only one symbiont. Our results reveal the importance of functional diversity of symbionts and demonstrate that different members of the root microbiome can complement each other in acquiring different limiting nutrients and in driving important ecosystem functions. 相似文献

The niche‐filling process predicted by the “ecological opportunity” (EO) model is an often‐invoked mechanism for generating exceptional diversity in island colonizers. Whether the same process governs lineage accumulation and trait disparity during continental colonization events is less clear. Here, we test this prediction by investigating the rate dynamics and trait evolution of one of Africa's most widespread amphibian colonizers, the true toads (Bufonidae). By reconstructing the most complete molecular phylogeny of African Bufonidae to date, we find that the diversification of lineages in Africa best conforms to a constant rate model throughout time and across subclades, with little support for EO. Evolutionary rates of life‐history traits have similarly been constant over time. However, an analysis of generalists and specialists showed a shift toward higher speciation rates associated with habitat specialization. The overall lack of EO signal can be interpreted in a number of ways and we propose several explanations. Firstly, methodological issues might preclude the detection of EO. Secondly, colonizers might not experience true EO conditions and due to the size, ecological heterogeneity and age of landmasses, the diversification processes might be more complex. Thirdly, lower speciation rates of habitat generalists may have affected overall proliferation of lineages. 相似文献

Maturational changes have been noted in neurally mediated contractile and relaxant responses in airways from New Zealand White rabbits. In this study, we focused on prostaglandins with bronchoprotective properties as potential modulators of airway tone in maturing rabbits. Tracheal rings from 1-, 2-, and 13-wk-old rabbits were assessed for neurally mediated contractile and relaxant responses produced by electrical field stimulation (EFS) of nerves in the presence and absence of the prostaglandin inhibitor, indomethacin (Indo). We also measured EFS-induced release of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and the stable metabolite of prostacyclin, 6-keto-prostaglandin F(1alpha) (6-keto-PGF(1alpha)). In the presence of Indo, EFS produced significant increases in contractile responses in segments from 1- and 2-wk-old animals but not in segments from 13-wk adult rabbits. Tracheal rings from 1- and 2-wk-old animals precontracted with neurokinin A (NKA) relaxed 100% in response to EFS when Indo was not in the bath. In rings from 13-wk-old animals, relaxation was 40%. With Indo, relaxation was abolished in 1-wk-old animals and reduced to 30% in the 2- and 13-wk-old groups. Buffer from baths collected after EFS had significant increases in PGE(2) and 6-keto-PGF(1alpha) released from tissues from 1- vs. 2- and 13-wk-old animals. Dose response curves to PGE(2) using tissues precontracted to NKA showed significant increases in relaxant responses in 1- and 2- vs. 13-wk-old rabbits. In rabbit airways, this study demonstrates enhanced modulation of airway tone by PGE(2) and greater release of the bronchoprotective prostaglandins PGE(2) and prostacyclin early in life. 相似文献

The Eastern Arc mountain chain and adjoining coastal forests of Tanzania and Kenya have been listed as world biodiversity
hotspots. We report on an ongoing attempt to estimate amphibian diversity on the three best studied mountains of the Eastern
Arc, the East Usambara, Uluguru and Udzungwa mountains of Tanzania, complemented by an estimate of diversity on the adjoining
coastal lowland. This proves to be a complex task, which introduces a note of caution into evaluating global biodiversity
estimates. Most amphibian species in eastern Tanzania occur on the coastal lowlands and are widely distributed, extending
at least north or south of Tanzania and, to a variable extent, westwards to the elevated interior. Diversity patterns along
the length of the lowlands are complex, with the presence of a Sahelian element in the extreme north. On the three Eastern
Arc mountains studied, species turnover associated with rising altitude is greater than turnover associated with latitudinal
distance between the mountain blocks, leading to greater altitudinal than latitudinal diversity in this equatorial region.
A long-standing divergence is indicated between montane and lowland endemics. Although forest-associated species are not the
largest contributor to the eastern Tanzanian total species diversity (some 48%), the uniqueness of these species both in lowland
and montane forests, combined with their evident vulnerability to disturbance, makes them a subject for particular conservation
concern, and justifies hotspot status for both montane and lowland forests. 相似文献
