Although the breeding ecology of Audouin’s gull has been widely studied, its spatial distribution patterns have received little attention. We assessed the foraging movements of 36 GPS-tracked adult Audouin’s gulls breeding at the Ebro Delta (NW Mediterranean), coinciding with the incubation period (May 2011). This also coincided with a trawling moratorium northwards from the colony. We modelled the distribution of the gulls by combining these tracking data with environmental variables (including fishing activities from Vessel Monitoring System, VMS), using Maxent. The modelling range included both marine and terrestrial areas. Models were produced separately for every 2h time interval across the day, and for 2 fishing activity scenarios (workdays vs. weekends), allowing to assess the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of the gulls and the degree of association with fisheries. During workdays, gull distribution at sea fully matched with fishing activities, both trawling (daylight) and purse-seining (nightime). Gulls tended to avoid the area under trawling moratorium, confirming the high influence of fisheries on the distribution patterns of this species. On weekends, gulls made lesser use of the sea and tended to increase the use of rice fields. Overall, Audouin’s gull activity was more intense during dailight hours, although birds also showed nocturnal activity, on both workdays and weekends. Nocturnal patterns at sea were more disperse during the latter, probably because these gulls are able to capture small pelagic fish at night in natural conditions, but tend to congregate around purse-seiners (which would enhance their foraging efficiency) in workdays. These results provide important insight for the management of this species. This is of particular relevance under the current scenario of European fisheries policies, since new regulations are aimed at eliminating discards, and this would likely influence Audouin’s gull populations.  相似文献

Climate characteristics appear to play a key role in filtering organisms based on their biological traits. If this trait filtering by climate indeed occurs, it should have effects on the composition, dynamics, taxonomic relatedness and co-occurrence patterns of local assemblages, regardless of the taxonomic group considered. This preliminary study aimed to assess the extent to which environmental variables might determine these patterns in local communities and to evaluate whether the ultimate cross-taxon congruence relationships are consistent across, or dependent on, the selected region. To this end, we studied the bryophyte, macrophyte, macroinvertebrate, and amphibian communities in two clusters of temporary wetlands on the NE Iberian Peninsula under mesothermal and semiarid climates. We observed effects of environmental filtering, with the communities differing between the climatic regions not only in their compositions but also in their dynamics and taxonomic relatedness patterns. Although the cross-taxon congruence in terms of species richness was high in the mesothermal climate, most of the congruent relationships were disrupted in the semiarid environment. Overall, because climate-dependent patterns appear to prevail over climate-consistent ones, we suggest that the use of surrogate taxa may be of limited value when aiming to assess wetland biodiversity across large areas.  相似文献

In the spur-and-groove reefs of the Ecological Reserve Siboney-Juticí (Southeast Cuba) octocorals are one of the predominant components of the sessile fauna. Main objectives of the present paper are characterizing the composition, structure and conservation status of the octocoral communities and assessing on the prevailing environmental conditions in the study area. For data collection, six sampling sites were located every 2-3 km ranging from 12 m to 17 m depth along the spur-and-groove reefs. In each site, 22-26 lm2 quadrants were zigzag arranged every 2 m. The density of colonies was determined per site. The severity degree and predictability of environmental conditions were inferred by using the Heterogeneity and Equitability indexes, respectively. Hydrodynamic stress and the Comparative Pollution Index were also assessed. Current affectations of the octocoral communities were also determined and classified into four main categories: mechanical damage, diseases, predation and invertebrate and macroalgae overgrowth. As a result, 25 species represented by 752 colonies were recorded and Eunicea flexuosa and Gorgonia ventalina were the most abundant. The occurrence of Eunicea succinea forma succinea constituted the first report for Eastern Cuba. Site densities ranged from 3.58 +/- 1.84 to 7.58 +/- 2.16 colonies/m2 and considered from moderate to low. The biggest densities were reported at both sides of the San Juan River mouth. Despite of the composition and structure of the octocoral communities, low to high hydrodynamic stress and low and moderate levels of contamination were inferred, it is likely that these indexes could have been overestimated due to the sensitivity of the indicator species to other factors such as sedimentation. The environmental conditions were mostly favorable and stable. In general, the number of dead colonies was low and mostly caused by the detachment of the substrate and overgrowth of Millepora alcicornis. Injuries were mainly brought about by mechanical damage, followed by coenenchyme loss, predation by Cyphoma gibbosum and macroalgae overgrowth. On the other hand, negative effects by Hermodice carunculata predation, bleaching, Red Band and Black Band Disease were not observed. Among sampled species, G. ventalina colonies were the most severely damaged within the community. As a whole, octocoral communities of spur-and-groove reefs in the Ecological Reserve Siboney-Juticí showed a good conservation status.  相似文献

The crystal structures of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), ursodeoxycholic acid (7beta isomer of CDCA) and their other two epimers (3beta,7alpha- and 3beta,7beta-isomers) have been resolved. The four isomers were recrystallized from p-xylene. CDCA crystal is hexagonal P6(5) while the crystals of the other three isomers are orthorhombic (P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group). Only the 3beta,7beta isomer forms an inclusion complex with the solvent with a 1:1 stoichiometry. In all cases, the three hydrogen bond sites (the two hydroxy groups, O3-H and O7-H, and the carboxylic acid group of the side chain, O24bO24a-H) simultaneously act as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. By considering that O24a is always donor and O24b is always acceptor, the hydrogen bond sequences can be understood on the basis of the interaction between the two hydroxy groups. However the comparison between the four compounds is complicated by the existence of two molecules in the asymmetric unit in the UDCA crystal resulting in that the same hydrogen bond site (for instance O3) can be donor towards two different acceptors (either O7 or O24b). As in the case of the four isomers of deoxycholic acid (Steroids 2004, 69, 379), the other three isomers present a donor-->acceptor sequence, which is O7-->O3 when O3-H is beta and O3-->O7 when O3-H is alpha. The spatial orientation of the carboxylic acid of the side chain is referred to two almost perpendicular planes (defined by (1) the carbon atoms C1/C6-C17/C20 and by (2) the methyl groups C18-C19 and the two carbon atoms to which they are linked, C10 and C13, respectively). Only the side chain of CDCA evidences a positive deviation towards the hydrophobic beta side of the molecule.  相似文献

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are characterized by their ability to self-renew and to differentiate into all cell types of a given organism. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern the ESC state is of great interest not only for basic research—for instance, ESCs represent a perfect system to study cellular differentiation in vitro—but also for their potential implications in human health, as these mechanisms are likewise involved in cancer progression and could be exploited in regenerative medicine. In this minireview, we focus on the latest insights into the molecular mechanisms mediated by the pluripotency factors as well as their roles during differentiation. We also discuss recent advances in understanding the function of the epigenetic regulators, Polycomb and MLL complexes, in ESC biology.  相似文献

Newly developed genome-editing tools, such as the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)–Cas9 system, allow simple and rapid genetic modification in most model organisms and human cell lines. Here, we report the production and analysis of mice carrying the inactivation via deletion of a genomic insulator, a key non-coding regulatory DNA element found 5′ upstream of the mouse tyrosinase (Tyr) gene. Targeting sequences flanking this boundary in mouse fertilized eggs resulted in the efficient deletion or inversion of large intervening DNA fragments delineated by the RNA guides. The resulting genome-edited mice showed a dramatic decrease in Tyr gene expression as inferred from the evident decrease of coat pigmentation, thus supporting the functionality of this boundary sequence in vivo, at the endogenous locus. Several potential off-targets bearing sequence similarity with each of the two RNA guides used were analyzed and found to be largely intact. This study reports how non-coding DNA elements, even if located in repeat-rich genomic sequences, can be efficiently and functionally evaluated in vivo and, furthermore, it illustrates how the regulatory elements described by the ENCODE and EPIGENOME projects, in the mouse and human genomes, can be systematically validated.  相似文献

A growing number of receptors, often associated with the innate immune response, are being identified as targets for bacterial toxins of the beta‐stranded pore‐forming family. These findings raise the new question of whether the receptors are activated or merely used as docking points facilitating the formation of a pore. To elucidate whether the Staphylococcus aureus Panton‐Valentine leukocidin and the leukotoxin HlgC/HlgB act through the C5a receptor (C5aR) as agonists, antagonists or differ from the C5a complement‐derived peptide, their activity is explored on C5aR‐expressing cells. Both leukotoxins equally bound C5aR in neutrophils and in stable transfected U937 cells and initiated mobilization of intracellular Ca2+. HlgC/HlgB requires the presence of robust intracellular acidic Ca2+ stores in order to evoke a rise in free [Ca2+]i, while the LukS‐PV/LukF‐PV directly altered reticular Ca2+ stores. Intracellular target specificity is conferred by the F‐subunit associated to the S‐subunit binding the receptor. Furthermore, internalization of the two leukotoxin components (S‐ and F‐subunits) associated to C5aR is required for the initiation of [Ca2+]i mobilization. Electrophysiological recordings on living cells demonstrated that LukS‐PV/LukF‐PV does not alter the membrane resistance of C5aR‐expressing cells. The present observations suggest that part of the pore‐forming process occurs in distinct intracellular compartments rather than at the plasma membrane.  相似文献
