Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a drought-tolerant cereal commonly grown for grain and fodder in arid areas throughout the world. Senegalese millet fields are infested with Helicotylenchus. The native evergreen woody shrub Piliostigma reticulatum is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. Its coppiced residues are used by small farmers as mulch in crop fields. The shrub’s nematicidal effect on the spiral nematode Helicotylenchus dihystera was evaluated in a pearl millet pot experiment. The abundance of nematodes decreased by 64% after application of either leaf powder or a pulverized mixing of leaves and stems, suggesting the use of aboveground materials of P. reticulatum as a potential nematicide. The results show promise for use of a local resource by subsistence farmers in the Sahel. Further research is needed on application to fully develop this approach as a biopesticide. 相似文献

In parenteral and intranasal immunization with M. pneumoniae of guinea pigs, along with seroconversion, there was observed development from the 15th-20th day of hypersensitivity of delayed type; this hypersensitivity was revealed by positive skin tests and by the reaction of specific transformation of the peripheral blood lymphocytes. An increased reactivity of the smooth muscles of the intestine of parenterally immunized animals was revealed. An isocratic high-performance liquid chromatographic method with column switching and direct injection has been developed to determine ciprofloxacin in plasma and Mueller–Hinton broth. An on-line dilution of the sample was performed with a loading mobile phase consisting of 173 mM phosphoric acid. The analyte was retained on a LiChrocart 4-4 precolumn filled with a LiChrospher 100 RP18, 5 μm. An electric-actuated system with two six-port valves allowed a clean-up step with a mixture 20 mM phosphate buffer (pH 3.5)–methanol (97: 3, v/v) and the transfer of the analyte by a back-flush mode to a 150×4.6 mm I.D. column packed with a Kromasil C8 5 μm, using a mobile phase of 20 mM phosphate buffer (pH 3.5)–acetonitrile (85:15, v/v). Fluorescence detection allowed a quantification limit of 0.078 μg/ml with a 40-μl sample size. The method was evaluated to determine its usefulness in studying the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic behaviour of ciprofloxacin in an in vitro model. 相似文献

Whilst of lesser prevalence than B deficient soils, B-rich soils are important, causing B toxicity in the field and decreased crop yields in different regions of the world. The highest naturally occurring concentrations of soil B are in soils derived from marine evaporites and marine argillaceous sediment. In addition, various anthropogenic sources of excess B may increase soil B to levels toxic for plants. The most important source is irrigation water, but others include wastes from surface mining, fly ash, and industrial chemicals. Ameliorating high-B soils is extremely difficult. A commonly used method of reclaiming high B soils is to extensively leach with low B water. Though used successfully, leaching may not be a permanent solution and causes difficulties with the disposal of the leachates. Other amelioration methods include the use of soil amendments (e.g. lime, gypsum) and the planting of plant genotypes that are tolerant of high external B concentrations. Although there are various methods available to determine the levels of B in soils, soil analysis can provide little more than a general risk assessment for B toxicity. Similarly, diagnosing B toxicity in plants, either by visible symptoms or tissue analysis has limited applicability. Thus at present, neither soil nor plant analysis can be recommended to precisely predict the growth of plants on high soil B. Recent physiological and genetic studies have provided some understanding of genetic variation in the response of plants to high concentrations of B. Moreover, these studies have facilitated the breeding of tolerant genotypes for cultivation on high B soils. Considerable genetic variation in response to high B has been identified in a wide range of plant species, most of which share a similar tolerance mechanism – reduced uptake of B in both shoots and roots. The tolerance mechanism appears to be under the control of several major additive genes, and specific chromosomal locations have been identified for the genes in some species. Considerable success has been achieved in breeding for tolerance to B toxicity, a process that is greatly aided by the ease with which genotypic variation for this characteristic can be assessed and the range of methods available to screen breeding populations. 相似文献

The function of dopamine D(3) receptors present in the striatum has remained elusive. In the present study evidence is provided for the existence of dopamine D(1)-D(3) receptor heteromers and for an intramembrane D(1)-D(3) receptor cross-talk in living cells and in the striatum. The formation of D(1)-D(3) receptor heteromers was demonstrated by fluorescence resonance energy transfer and bioluminescence resonance energy transfer techniques in transfected mammalian cells. In membrane preparations from these cells, a synergistic D(1)-D(3) intramembrane receptor-receptor interaction was observed, by which D(3) receptor stimulation enhances D(1) receptor agonist affinity, indicating that the D(1)-D(3) intramembrane receptor-receptor interaction is a biochemical characteristic of the D(1)-D(3) receptor heteromer. The same biochemical characteristic was also observed in membrane preparations from brain striatum, demonstrating the striatal co-localization and heteromerization of D(1) and D(3) receptors. According to the synergistic D(1)-D(3) intramembrane receptor-receptor interaction, experiments in reserpinized mice showed that D(3) receptor stimulation potentiates D(1) receptor-mediated behavioral effects by a different mechanism than D(2) receptor stimulation. The present study shows that a main functional significance of the D(3) receptor is to obtain a stronger dopaminergic response in the striatal neurons that co-express the two receptors. 相似文献

We studied the effect of varying levels of sex hormones, induced by ovariectomy and administration of testosterone or estradiol, on aortic reactivity in female rats with metabolic syndrome (MS) induced by a sucrose diet. Vasoreactivity of aortic rings, blood pressure, intra-abdominal fat, serum triglycerides, nitrates and nitrites, and TBARS were evaluated. Intact MS and ovariectomized MS had higher BP than intact control (C) and ovariectomized C, respectively; estradiol administration decreased BP in ovariectomized MS but not in ovariectomized C. Triglycerides and fat were both higher in MS. Triglycerides were not modified by surgery or hormone treatment, but ovariectomy increased fat. When ovariectomy was combined with hormones, however, fat was reduced to the level of intact rats. Ovariectomy decreased, but hormones increased, serum nitrates and nitrites. Vasoconstriction was larger in intact MS and ovariectomized MS + testosterone aortas than in intact C and ovariectomized C + testosterone, respectively. Vasodilation was reduced in intact MS and ovariectomized MS + testosterone compared with intact C, ovariectomized C + testosterone, ovariectomized MS, and ovariectomized MS + estradiol. The results suggest endothelial dysfunction in intact MS and ovariectomized MS + testosterone, but protection by ovariectomy + estradiol in MS due to hormones. Indomethacin reduced all contractions, but the effect was greater in estradiol-treated rats. L-NAME increased contractility, more in the ovariectomized C and MS groups and less in the estradiol-treated groups. 相似文献

The objectives of the study were to identify the relevant hydraulic parameters associated with stomatal regulation during water stress and to test the hypothesis of a stomatal control of xylem embolism in walnut (Juglans regia x nigra) trees. The hydraulic characteristics of the sap pathway were experimentally altered with different methods to alter plant transpiration (Eplant) and stomatal conductance (gs). Potted trees were exposed to a soil water depletion to alter soil water potential (Psisoil), soil resistance (Rsoil), and root hydraulic resistances (Rroot). Soil temperature was changed to alter Rroot alone. Embolism was created in the trunk to increase shoot resistance (Rshoot). Stomata closed in response to these stresses with the effect of maintaining the water pressure in the leaf rachis xylem (P(rachis)) above -1.4 MPa and the leaf water potential (Psileaf) above -1.6 MPa. The same dependence of Eplant and gs on P(rachis) or Psileaf was always observed. This suggested that stomata were not responding to changes in Psisoil, Rsoil, Rroot, or Rshoot per se but rather to their impact on P(rachis) and/or Psileaf. Leaf rachis was the most vulnerable organ, with a threshold P(rachis) for embolism induction of -1.4 MPa. The minimum Psileaf values corresponded to leaf turgor loss point. This suggested that stomata are responding to leaf water status as determined by transpiration rate and plant hydraulics and that P(rachis) might be the physiological parameter regulated by stomatal closure during water stress, which would have the effect of preventing extensive developments of cavitation during water stress. 相似文献
