In this study, the simultaneously recorded and selectively averaged evoked potentials in some of the structures of the auditory pathway (acoustical cortex, medial geniculate nucleus, inferior colliculus), in the reticular formation and the hippocampus of the cat during sleep as well as the simultaneous amplitude frequency characteristics of these structures are given. The power spectral density functions computed from the simultaneously recorded spontaneous activities of these structures are also presented. Using these results, the following analyses are accomplished:(1) determination of the dynamics of potentials simultaneously obtained from various structures, in order to evaluate the common features of their system characteristics; (2) determination of the relationship (or interactions) between rhythmic activity and evoked potentials of the brain.  相似文献

In this study, we analyze the important relation between the spontaneous and evoked activities of the substructures of the cat brain, such as the reticular formation, hippocampus, inferior colliculus, medial geniculate nucleus and acoustical cortex, with an ensemble of systems theory methods consisting of the following steps: (1) single auditory and/or visual evoked potentials (EPs) and the spontaneous activities (EEG) just preceding the stimuli are recorded from the brain center under study; (2) selectively averaged evoked potentials (SAEPs) are obtained from the recorded EPs; (3) amplitude frequency characteristics are computed from the AAEPs by means of Fourier transform; (4) the single EEG-EP sweeps are theoretically pass-band filtered with adequate band limits determined according to the selectivities revealed by the amplitude characteristics; (5) the EEG and EP components obtained in this way are compared with regard to the amplification in the population response upon the application of the stimulus. The results of this analysis support quantitatively our prediction of various types of resonance phenomena in a number of nuclei in the cat brain and in a large scale of frequencies from 1 Hz to 1000 Hz and show that the amplification factor related to resonance phenomena has probabilistic nature. Therefore, the analogy which we have recently drawn between the behaviors of a neural population and a random-phase probabilistic harmonic oscillator is extended by assigning also the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillations as random variables. In this study, our previous results on the important relation between EEG and EPs were extended by experiments with chronically implanted and freely moving cats, which had electrodes at the acoustical cortex, inferior colliculus and reticular formation. During the experiments the frequency stabilization upon sound stimulation was shown in the frequency domain by comparison of the pre-stimulus power spectra and post-stimulus amplitude frequency characteristics. Comparative frequency domain analysis of about 75 EEG-EPograms (sample of spontaneous activities just prior to stimulation and single evoked potentials following the stimulation), which were recorded from all the brain nuclei mentioned above and from each of the 11 cats, was performed as follows: 1) Power spectra of the EEG-records prior to stimulus were evaluated. 2) Instantaneous frequency characteristics of single EPs were obtained by the Fourier transform. 3) Distribution of the amplitude maxima of the EP-frequency characteristics and the distribution of the EEG-spectral peaks were compared by plotting two types of histograms containing relevant spectral peaks before and after the stimulation. In a frequency range between 1–1000 Hz, the frequency distribution of the EP records from RF and IC were accumulated in narrow discrete frequency channels, whereas, the distribution of the spectral peaks of the EEG depicted frequency spread in broad channels. The frequency stabilization of the EP records from GEA, in the alpha frequency range, was also observed. This effect was described by a factor which we called as the Frequency Stabilization Factor. The results presented in this study showed that the frequency stabilization of the brain's electrical activity induced by sensory stimulation displayed a fluctuation leading to frequency stabilization factors between 0.95 and 5.00. The frequency stabilization and relevant power enhancement upon stimulation strongly support our contention that evoked potential results from the frequency stabilization of the spontaneous activity, triggered by stimulation.Supported by Grant No. TAG-345 of the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey  相似文献

Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) is a sensitive indicator of genotoxicity. In this study we investigated the effects of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking on the frequency of SCE in cultures of peripheral lymphocytes. The rate was higher in alcoholics who smoked (10.89+/-2.46) and in smokers (positive controls) (7.64+/-1.01) than in healthy non-smokers (negative controls) (6.96+/-2.18). Statistical analysis suggested that the increases were related to alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking (p<0.05).  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate the effect of L-carnitine in ischaemia and reperfusion of the rat kidney. Rats were randomly allocated into three groups. Group I (control group; n = 6) received no treatment. Group II (isotonic saline group; n = 6), received 2 ml of isotonic saline 15 min before the renal ischaemia, and group III (carnitine group; n = 6) received L-carnitine hydrochloride (100 mg kg(-1)) intraperitoneally. At the end of the reperfusion period, rats were sacrificed. Tissue malondialdehyde level (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and nitrite/nitrate (NO) level of renal tissue were measured to evaluate the lipid peroxidation, neutrophil function, and nitric oxide metabolism, respectively. The tissue levels of MDA, MPO and NO were lower in group III (71.8 +/- 8.4, 172.1 +/- 27.4 U g(-1) tissue, 76.3 +/- 29.7 micromol l(-1) respectively) than levels in groups I (103.4 +/- 13.4 nmol g(-1), 325.9 +/- 20.2 U g(-1) tissue, 144.5 +/- 39.2 micromol l(-1), respectively) and II (103.5 +/- 11.4 nmol g(-1), 317.1 +/- 41.5 U g(-1) tissue, 148.9 +/- 23.9 micromol l(-1), respectively). It is shown that carnitine protects kidney tissue against ischaemia-reperfusion injury.  相似文献

Reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH and GSSG), protein-bound glutathione, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities were determined in the erythrocyte lysates and membranes of type I and II alcoholics in order to clarify the effect of age-of-onset and the duration of the alcohol consumption on erythrocyte oxidant and antioxidant status. The osmotic fragility and susceptibility of the erythrocytes to haemolysis were also determined. Erythrocyte lipid peroxidation was significantly increased but, GSH and protein-bound GSH, GSH/GSSG ratio and antioxidant enzyme activities were markedly decreased in the erythrocytes of the alcoholic subgroups. Erythrocyte count and haemoglobin content in the blood of alcoholics were found to be decreased in accordance with the finding that erythrocytes were more fragile and less resistant to haemolysis particularly in type II alcoholics. The present study showed that ethanol-induced oxidative stress in erythrocytes can lead to haemolysis and membrane-specific injuries in erythrocytes of the alcoholic subtypes.  相似文献

Although gender differences in intestinal perfusion exist following trauma-hemorrhage (T-H), it remains unknown whether endothelin-1 (ET-1) plays any role in these dimorphic responses. To study this, male, proestrus female (female), and 17 beta-estradiol (E2)-treated male rats underwent midline laparotomy, hemorrhagic shock (blood pressure 40 mmHg, 90 min), and resuscitation (Ringer lactate, 4X shed blood volume, 1 h). Two hours thereafter, intestinal perfusion flow (IPF) was measured using isolated intestinal perfusion. The IPF in sham-operated males was significantly lower than those in other groups and decreased markedly following T-H. In contrast, no significant decrease in IPF was observed in females and E2 males following T-H. The lower IPF in sham-operated males was significantly elevated by ET(A) receptor antagonist (BQ-123) administration and was similar to that seen in sham-operated females. The decreased IPF in males after T-H was also attenuated by BQ-123 administration. The intestinal ET-1 levels in sham-operated males were significantly higher than in other groups. Although plasma and intestinal ET-1 levels increased significantly after T-H in all groups, they were highest in males. Plasma E2 levels in females and E2 males were significantly higher than in males; however, they were not affected by T-H. There was a negative correlation between plasma ET-1 and E2 following T-H. Thus ET-1 appears to play an important role in intestinal perfusion failure following T-H in males. Because E2 can modulate this vasoconstrictor effect of ET-1, these findings may partially explain the previously observed salutary effect of estrogen in improving intestinal perfusion following T-H in males.  相似文献

Adaptation of Spirogyra insignis (Chlorophyceae) to growth and survival in an extreme natural environment (sulphureous waters from La Hedionda Spa, S. Spain) was analysed by using an experimental model. Photosynthesis and growth of the alga were inhibited when it was cultured in La Hedionda Spa waters (LHW), but after further incubation for several weeks, the culture survived due to the growth of a variant that was resistant to LHW. A Luria-Delbruck fluctuation analysis was carried out to distinguish between resistant filaments arising from rare spontaneous mutations and resistant filaments arising from other mechanisms of adaptation. It was demonstrated that the resistant filaments arose randomly by rare spontaneous mutations before the addition of LHW (preselective mutations). The rate of spontaneous mutation from sensitivity to resistance was 2.7 x 10(-7) mutants per cell division. Since LHW(resistant) mutants have a diminished growth rate, they are maintained in nonsulphureous natural waters as the result of a balance between new resistants arising from spontaneous mutation and resistants eliminated by natural selection. Thus, recurrence of rare spontaneous preselective mutations ensures the survival of the alga in sulphureous waters.  相似文献
