Foraging behavior under the risk of predation has interested biologists for decades. Here, we examine paternal genetic effects on foraging decisions of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) larvae sired by males adopting alternative life histories. We use split in vitro fertilization to generate maternal half‐siblings sired by either a ‘parental’ male or a ‘cuckolder’ male. Immediately, upon the switch to exogenous feeding, we fed the larvae ad libitum for 2 d. We then starved the larvae for between 12 and 17 h, following which we subjected them to a dichotomous choice foraging trial, where one side of a test tank posed a risky foraging habitat and the other posed a safe foraging habitat. Equal amounts of food were simultaneously introduced to both sides of the tank and the proportion of individuals on either side was recorded. There were significantly fewer cuckolder offspring foraging on the risky side of the tank when compared with their parental half‐siblings indicating that cuckolder offspring took fewer risks than parental offspring. These results demonstrate a paternal genetic effect (sire life history) on foraging behavior. We ruled out energetic state as a possible explanation for this difference because the half‐siblings did not differ in body length or mass. Instead, previous research suggests that cuckolder offspring have higher conversion efficiency (efficiency of converting food into soma) than parental offspring and therefore the differences in foraging behavior observed here may, in part, be attributed to genetic differences in conversion efficiency.  相似文献

A biotransformation mixture which contained codeine and washed cells of Pseudomonas putida M10 gave rise to a number of transformation products that are of clinical importance which included hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine and 14beta-hydroxycodeine. Incubations with the same organism and codeinone gave rise to 14beta-hydroxycodeinone and 14beta-hydroxycodeine. Cell-free extracts and membrane fractions of P. putida M10 were shown to catalyse the 14beta-hydroxylation of codeinone. In addition, the potent analgesic oxycodone was shown to be produced from 14beta-hydroxycodeinone.  相似文献

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is the most common acute leukaemia in adults; however, the genetic aetiology of the disease is not yet fully understood. A quantitative expression profile analysis of 157 mature miRNAs was performed on 100 AML patients representing the spectrum of known karyotypes common in AML. The principle observation reported here is that AMLs bearing a t(15;17) translocation had a distinctive signature throughout the whole set of genes, including the up regulation of a subset of miRNAs located in the human 14q32 imprinted domain. The set included miR-127, miR-154, miR-154*, miR-299, miR-323, miR-368, and miR-370. Furthermore, specific subsets of miRNAs were identified that provided molecular signatures characteristic of the major translocation-mediated gene fusion events in AML. Analysis of variance showed the significant deregulation of 33 miRNAs across the leukaemic set with respect to bone marrow from healthy donors. Fluorescent in situ hybridisation analysis using miRNA-specific locked nucleic acid (LNA) probes on cryopreserved patient cells confirmed the results obtained by real-time PCR. This study, conducted on about a fifth of the miRNAs currently reported in the Sanger database (microrna.sanger.ac.uk), demonstrates the potential for using miRNA expression to sub-classify cancer and suggests a role in the aetiology of leukaemia.  相似文献

Fruit colour polymorphisms are widespread in nature, but their ecological and evolutionary dynamics remain poorly understood. Here we examine Acacia ligulata, a shrub of the Australian arid zone which exhibits a red/orange/yellow aril colour polymorphism. We asked whether the polymorphism had a genetic basis; whether selection acted differentially on morphs during the seed and seedling stages; whether geographic variation in morph frequencies was correlated with environmental factors; and whether morphs differed in physical or chemical characteristics that might influence selection on them. When grown to maturity in a common greenhouse environment, maternal families of seeds showed phenotypic patterns consistent with biparental genetic control of the polymorphism. In contrast to other fruit-colour polymorphic species, progeny of A. ligulata morphs did not vary in rates of seedling emergence or survival in a common garden. Sampling along a 580 km transect revealed clinal variation in morph frequencies. Frequencies of the yellow morph decreased, and frequencies of the red morph increased, across a gradient of decreasing temperature and increasing rainfall. Morphs did not differ in seed mass, aril mass, or in profiles of fatty acids and flavonoids in either arils or seeds. However, morphs showed consistent differences in carotenoid profiles' and elemental content of arils, suggesting that selection by avian and insect seed dispersers, seed predators and herbivores should be investigated. These patterns indicate that both abiotic and biotic factors may contribute to selection on the A. ligulata polymorphism. Six isomers of dipalmitoylcyclopentanetriol phosphocholine (cyclopentano-lecithin) were tested as potential substrates for phospholipase A2. Since each of these analogs possesses a configuration that mimics a narrow range of conformations of a glycerophospholipid molecule, the analogs were used to assess the enzyme's conformational requirements. Studies showed that all of the analogs containing the phosphocholine at the C-1 (or C-3) position could be hydrolyzed, while only one of the three analogs that contains the polar head group at the C-2 position was susceptible. Kinetic studies, however, revealed that only the all-trans-(1,3/2-1P)-cyclopentano-lecithin gave initial rates of hydrolysis that were measurable by pH-stat. Acyl group specificity of the enzyme towards the all-trans isomer was determined with an analog was acyl groups were distinguishable. The synthesis of this mixed-acid-cyclopentano-PC is described herein. When this analog was enzymatically assayed, results unequivocally showed the enzyme to be specific for C-2 acyl hydrolysis. This specificity, and data showing that the all-trans analog is stereospecifically hydrolyzed, indicate that it is acted on in an analogous manner to dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. These studies indicate that although the configuration of the analog is not necessarily a prerequisite for hydrolysis, there does appear to be an optimal spatial orientation for enzymatic activity. The analogy between the susceptibilities of all-trans-(1,3/2-1P)-cyclopentano-lecithin and glycero-lecithin suggests that the conformation of the glycero-lecithin during phospholipase A2-mediated hydrolysis may be best simulated by the all-trans orientation of C-O bonds in the artificial substrate.  相似文献
