From February 1994 to January 2004, we studied the avifauna of a 25,000-ha area centered on the Janos-Casas Grandes Prairie
Dog Complex of Northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico. Avian diversity totalled 227 species, of which 86 (38%) were residents, 78
(35%) winter migrants, 30 (14%) summer migrants, 27 (11%) transients, and 6 (2%) accidental vagrants. Around 84 (38%) species
were observed in at least two habitat types, with riparian areas supporting the highest observed diversity of birds (112 species).
Of the 143 species observed in only one habitat type, 44 (30%) occurred in riparian areas, 35 (26%) in association with ponds
and aquatic vegetation, 28 (20%) in grasslands, 16 (11%) in the oak woodland–grassland ecotone, 12 (9%) in mesquite scrubland,
5 (3%) around human settlements, and 3 (2%) in crop fields. In particular, summer rains influenced the abundance and/or distribution
of several species in grasslands such as the long-billed curlew (Numenius americanus). The present study, which was part of a larger effort to document the merits of establishing a large biosphere reserve in
the area, confirmed the importance of the prairie dog complex and grasslands to many species of conservation concern, including
the threatened mountain plover (Charadrius montanus), a winter resident. With the␣higher-elevation habitats yet to be surveyed, the local diversity of bird species here already
places the proposed reserve among the most important protected areas in all of Mexico. The establishment of the reserve is

Young children have long been known to act selfishly and gradually appear to become more generous across middle childhood. While this apparent change has been well documented, the underlying mechanisms supporting this remain unclear. The current study examined the role of early theory of mind and executive functioning in facilitating sharing in a large sample (N = 98) of preschoolers. Results reveal a curious relation between early false-belief understanding and sharing behavior. Contrary to many commonsense notions and predominant theories, competence in this ability is actually related to less sharing. Thus, the relation between developing theory of mind and sharing may not be as straightforward as it seems in preschool age children. It is precisely the children who can engage in theory of mind that decide to share less with others. 相似文献

The development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is strongly associated with obesity. In humans, T2D increases the risk for end organ complications. Among these, heart disease has been ranked as the leading cause of death. We used a proteomic methodology to test the hypothesis that a pre-diabetic state generated by high-fat diet leads to changes in proteins related to heart function and structure. Over 300 protein spots were resolved by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE). Fifteen protein spots were found to be altered (7 decreased and 8 increased) in pre-diabetic hearts. The protein spots were then identified by mass spectrometry and immunoblots. Among the decreased proteins, 3 are involved in heart structure (one isoform of desmin, troponin T2 and α-cardiac actin), 3 are involved in energy metabolism (mitochondrial ATP synthase β subunit, adenylate kinase and creatine kinase) and one is a component of the citric acid cycle (isocitrate dehydrogenase 3). In contrast, proteins involved in fatty acid oxidation (two isoforms of peroxisomal enoyl-CoA hydratase) and the citric acid cycle (three isoforms of malate dehydrogenase) were increased in pre-diabetic hearts. The results suggest that changes in the levels of several heart proteins may have implications in the development of the cardiac phenotype associated to T2D. 相似文献

The type II transmembrane serine protease matriptase has an essential role in the integrity and function of multiple epithelial tissues. In the epidermis, matriptase activates the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored membrane serine protease prostasin to initiate a proteolytic cascade that is required for the development of the stratum corneum barrier function. Accordingly, mice deficient for matriptase phenocopy mice deficient for epidermal prostasin and present with impaired corneocyte differentiation, imparied lipid matrix formation, loss of profilaggrin processing and loss of tight junction formation and function. Together, these defects lead to a compromised epidermal barrier and result in fatal dehydration during the neonatal period. Proteolytic activity of the matriptase-prostasin cascade is regulated in the epidermis via inhibition by the Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitor hepatocyte growth factor activator inhibitor-1 (HAI-1). Importantly, targeted post-natal ablation of matriptase in mice perturbs the function of multiple adult tissues, indicating an ongoing requirement for matriptase proteolysis in the maintenance of diverse types of epithelia. Impaired matriptase proteolytic activity has been linked to human Autosomal Recessive Icthyosis with Hypotrichosis (ARIH), whereas aberrant matriptase activity has been implicated in Netherton’s Syndrome. This review will summarize information pertaining to the role of matriptase in epithelial biology and will discuss recent advancements in our understanding of how matriptase activity is regulated and the down-stream effectors of matriptase proteolysis. 相似文献

Language evolution is traditionally described in terms of family trees with ancestral languages splitting into descendent languages. However, it has long been recognized that language evolution also entails horizontal components, most commonly through lexical borrowing. For example, the English language was heavily influenced by Old Norse and Old French; eight per cent of its basic vocabulary is borrowed. Borrowing is a distinctly non-tree-like process--akin to horizontal gene transfer in genome evolution--that cannot be recovered by phylogenetic trees. Here, we infer the frequency of hidden borrowing among 2346 cognates (etymologically related words) of basic vocabulary distributed across 84 Indo-European languages. The dataset includes 124 (5%) known borrowings. Applying the uniformitarian principle to inventory dynamics in past and present basic vocabularies, we find that 1373 (61%) of the cognates have been affected by borrowing during their history. Our approach correctly identified 117 (94%) known borrowings. Reconstructed phylogenetic networks that capture both vertical and horizontal components of evolutionary history reveal that, on average, eight per cent of the words of basic vocabulary in each Indo-European language were involved in borrowing during evolution. Basic vocabulary is often assumed to be relatively resistant to borrowing. Our results indicate that the impact of borrowing is far more widespread than previously thought. 相似文献

Human autosomal recessive ichthyosis with hypotrichosis (ARIH) is an inherited disorder recently linked to homozygosity for a point mutation in the ST14 gene that causes a G827R mutation in the matriptase serine protease domain (G216 in chymotrypsin numbering). Here we show that human G827R matriptase has strongly reduced proteolytic activity toward small molecule substrates, as well as toward its candidate epidermal target, prostasin. To further investigate the possible contribution of low matriptase activity to ARIH, we generated an ST14 hypomorphic mouse strain that displays a 100-fold reduction in epidermal matriptase mRNA levels. Interestingly, unlike ST14 null mice, ST14 hypomorphic mice were viable and fertile but displayed a spectrum of abnormalities that strikingly resembled ARIH. Thus, ST14 hypomorphic mice developed hyperproliferative and retention ichthyosis with impaired desquamation, hypotrichosis with brittle, thin, uneven, and sparse hair, and tooth defects. Biochemical analysis of ST14 hypomorphic epidermis revealed reduced prostasin proteolytic activation and profilaggrin proteolytic processing, compatible with a primary role of matriptase in this process. This work strongly indicates that reduced activity of a matriptase-prostasin proteolytic cascade is the etiological origin of human ARIH and provides an important mouse model for the exploration of matriptase function in ARIH, as well as multiple other physiological and pathological processes. 相似文献

The human ZC3H14 gene, which encodes a ubiquitously expressed polyadenosine zinc finger RNA-binding protein, is mutated in an inherited form of autosomal recessive, nonsyndromic intellectual disability. To gain insight into neurological functions of ZC3H14, we previously developed a Drosophila melanogaster model of ZC3H14 loss by deleting the fly ortholog, Nab2. Studies in this invertebrate model revealed that Nab2 controls final patterns of neuron projection within fully developed adult brains, but the role of Nab2 during development of the Drosophila brain is not known. Here, we identify roles for Nab2 in controlling the dynamic growth of axons in the developing brain mushroom bodies, which support olfactory learning and memory, and regulating abundance of a small fraction of the total brain proteome. The group of Nab2-regulated brain proteins, identified by quantitative proteomic analysis, includes the microtubule-binding protein Futsch, the neuronal Ig-family transmembrane protein turtle, the glial:neuron adhesion protein contactin, the Rac GTPase-activating protein tumbleweed, and the planar cell polarity factor Van Gogh, which collectively link Nab2 to the processes of brain morphogenesis, neuroblast proliferation, circadian sleep/wake cycles, and synaptic development. Overall, these data indicate that Nab2 controls the abundance of a subset of brain proteins during the active process of wiring the pupal brain mushroom body and thus provide a window into potentially conserved functions of the Nab2/ZC3H14 RNA-binding proteins in neurodevelopment. 相似文献

Upon erythropoietin (Epo) engagement, Epo-receptor (R) homodimerizes to activate JAK2 and Lyn, which phosphorylate STAT5. Although recent investigations have identified key negative regulators of Epo-R signaling, little is known about the role of membrane localization in controlling receptor signal fidelity. Here we show a critical role for membrane raft (MR) microdomains in creation of discrete signaling platforms essential for Epo-R signaling. Treatment of UT7 cells with Epo induced MR assembly and coalescence. Confocal microscopy showed that raft aggregates significantly increased after Epo stimulation (mean, 4.3±1.4(SE) vs. 25.6±3.2 aggregates/cell; p≤0.001), accompanied by a >3-fold increase in cluster size (p≤0.001). Raft fraction immunoblotting showed Epo-R translocation to MR after Epo stimulation and was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy in Epo stimulated UT7 cells and primary erythroid bursts. Receptor recruitment into MR was accompanied by incorporation of JAK2, Lyn, and STAT5 and their activated forms. Raft disruption by cholesterol depletion extinguished Epo induced Jak2, STAT5, Akt and MAPK phosphorylation in UT7 cells and erythroid progenitors. Furthermore, inhibition of the Rho GTPases Rac1 or RhoA blocked receptor recruitment into raft fractions, indicating a role for these GTPases in receptor trafficking. These data establish a critical role for MR in recruitment and assembly of Epo-R and signal intermediates into discrete membrane signaling units. 相似文献
