Climate change is expected to result in range shifts and habitat fragmentation for many species. In the Arctic, loss of sea ice will reduce barriers to dispersal or eliminate movement corridors, resulting in increased connectivity or geographic isolation with sweeping implications for conservation. We used satellite telemetry, data from individually marked animals (research and harvest), and microsatellite genetic data to examine changes in geographic range, emigration, and interpopulation connectivity of the Baffin Bay (BB) polar bear (Ursus maritimus) subpopulation over a 25‐year period of sea‐ice loss. Satellite telemetry collected from n = 43 (1991–1995) and 38 (2009–2015) adult females revealed a significant contraction in subpopulation range size (95% bivariate normal kernel range) in most months and seasons, with the most marked reduction being a 70% decline in summer from 716,000 km2 (SE 58,000) to 211,000 km2 (SE 23,000) (p < .001). Between the 1990s and 2000s, there was a significant shift northward during the on‐ice seasons (2.6° shift in winter median latitude, 1.1° shift in spring median latitude) and a significant range contraction in the ice‐free summers. Bears in the 2000s were less likely to leave BB, with significant reductions in the numbers of bears moving into Davis Strait (DS) in winter and Lancaster Sound (LS) in summer. Harvest recoveries suggested both short and long‐term fidelity to BB remained high over both periods (83–99% of marked bears remained in BB). Genetic analyses using eight polymorphic microsatellites confirmed a previously documented differentiation between BB, DS, and LS; yet weakly differentiated BB from Kane Basin (KB) for the first time. Our results provide the first multiple lines of evidence for an increasingly geographically and functionally isolated subpopulation of polar bears in the context of long‐term sea‐ice loss. This may be indicative of future patterns for other polar bear subpopulations under climate change.  相似文献

Temperate shallow meso- to eutrophic lakes can exist in one of two alternative states with contrasting foodwebs, referred to as the clear-water and the turbid state. We describe the planktonic ciliate communities of such lakes based on a survey of 66 northwestern European lakes. Ciliates were enumerated and identified to species level according to the quantitative protargol staining technique. Ciliate biomass was on average twice as high in the turbid than in the clear-water lakes. The ciliate communities were dominated by oligotrichs and protostomatids, and no differences in functional composition or α-diversity could be detected between turbid and clear-water lakes, although β-diversity tended to be higher in the latter. At the species level, however, community structure strongly differed between turbid and clear-water lakes, and several indicator species could be identified for the different lake categories. Variation partitioning showed that nutrient status did not explain ciliate community structure independent of the alternative states, while lake area was identified as an additional structuring factor for the ciliate communities. These results stress the importance of the ecosystem structure in shaping ciliate communities in temperate shallow lakes and suggest that nutrient status has little direct effect on ciliate community structure in such lakes.  相似文献

The authors wish to correct an error in the paper "The behavior of the nucleic acids during the early development of the sea urchin egg (Arbacia)" (J. Gen. Physiol., 1947–48, 31, 203). Owing to an oversight, the figures for the amounts of various P fractions in a single Arbacia egg have been erroneously expressed in γ x 10–3 units (Tables I and II, page 205; the last two lines of page 206). The figures should have been expressed in γ x 10–5 units. Thus, the fertilized Arbacia egg contains an average of 20 γ x 10–5 ribonucleic acid P and 0.7 to 1 γ x 10–5 desoxyribonucleic acid P.  相似文献

Pymetrozine inhibits feeding in aphids immediately after application without producing visible neurotoxic effects, as previously reported. In the present work, Locusta migratoria, though not a plant-sucking insect, was found to respond to pymetrozine by displaying unique symptoms, which were lifting and stretching of the hindlegs, in addition to inhibition of feeding. In locust, pymetrozine enhanced spontaneous spike discharge of the metathoracic and suboesophageal ganglia in situ at nanomolar concentrations. Similarly, pymetrozine increased the spontaneous rhythmic contractions of the isolated foregut with maximal effects also in the nanomolar range. The actions of pymetrozine were counteracted by biogenic amine receptor antagonists and mimicked by serotonin, not by dopamine and octopamine. Moreover, pymetrozine and serotonin strongly potentiated the effects of each other. Pymetrozine was inactive at all neurotransmitter receptors present on isolated locust neuronal somata, and at all other examined neuronal sites. In Myzus persicae, electrical penetration graph experiments revealed that serotonin, like pymetrozine, inhibited stylet penetration, and strongly enhanced the action of pymetrozine, comparable to the locust. Amine receptor antagonists were not specifically active in the aphid. We conclude from the present results that pymetrozine acts via a novel mechanism that is linked to the signalling pathway of serotonin.  相似文献

Parasites are ubiquitous, and the ability to defend against these is of paramount importance. One way to fight diseases is self‐medication, which occurs when an organism consumes biologically active compounds to clear, inhibit, or alleviate disease symptoms. Here, we show for the first time that ants selectively consume harmful substances (reactive oxygen species, ROS) upon exposure to a fungal pathogen, yet avoid these in the absence of infection. This increased intake of ROS, while harmful to healthy ants, leads to higher survival of exposed ants. The fact that ingestion of this substance carries a fitness cost in the absence of pathogens rules out compensatory diet choice as the mechanism, and provides evidence that social insects medicate themselves against fungal infection, using a substance that carries a fitness cost to uninfected individuals.  相似文献

Potential reproductive conflicts are common in social insects and may occur between and within castes. In multiqueen (polygyne) colonies of ants, reproductive conflicts among coexisting queens may be resolved by aggressive interactions and/or by pheromonal signalling. Pheromonal signals may be directed at workers, which may adjust the reproductive shares of queens behaviourally. Workers are expected to favour a queen that is more likely to be their mother and to produce offspring of close kin to them. We used microsatellite markers to study reproductive partitioning between cobreeding Formica fusca queens in a laboratory experiment where workers received a choice between two queens. We expected queens of this species to communicate their reproductive status by chemical communication, because no aggressive interactions between queens have been observed. We found that queens of different reproductive status (with majority, minority or no production) differed in their cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles. The fecundity of a queen was associated with worker behaviour; the higher a queen's fecundity, the more attention she received from workers. Our results suggest that a queen fecundity signal is encoded in her CHC profile and acts as a pheromone for workers, which respond to the signal by discriminating between queens. Carbon‐based materials (CBMs) for energetic and material purposes combine biogenic and anthropogenic carbon cycles. In the latter, numerous manufactured products with various in‐use lifespans accumulate as anthropogenic carbon stocks. Understanding the behavior of these stocks is an important requirement to estimate not only future waste amounts, source for secondary raw materials, but also the impacts and effects in carbon emissions and carbon management. Previous models have estimated material stock changes; however, a lack of research in carbon stocks is perceived. Moreover, studies follow in‐use lifespan estimation approaches, such as decay functions, which do not coincide with observed consumption and waste treatment patterns. In the first part of this article, we present a carbon stock‐flow model to analyze inter‐relationships between carbon flows and stocks from raw materials to waste treatment processes considering a consumer perspective, where the dynamics of anthropogenic carbon stocks are completely described. In the second part, we study the pulp and paper industry in Germany under a scenario approach to analyze the behavior, development, and impacts of paper stocks and flows between 2010 and 2040. The model provided coherent results, with industrial data estimating 33.9 million metric tons in 2010 in paper stocks, equivalent to 410 kilograms per person. Consumption per capita and in‐use lifespan of products were identified as the most significant variables in carbon stock building. Model simulations show a sustained growth in stocks for the next 30 years, with increase in waste and carbon emissions. But in combination with recycling and reuse mechanisms and consumption patterns, environmental impacts are reduced.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung In einer Reihe von Schimmelpilzen — und damit (von Bakterien abgesehen) erstmals eindeutig in pflanzlichen Organismen — wurde neben Uricase auch eine Xanthindehydrase nachgewiesen. Nach den vorliegenden orientierenden Versuchen scheint sie allerdings weniger verbreitet, weniger aktiv und labiler zu sein als die Uricase.Eigenschaften, Hemmbarkeit und Kinetik des Ferments wurden näher untersucht. Die Mycelextrakte besitzen auch das Vermögen zur Oxydation von Adenin (washrscheinlich nach vorausgegangener hydrolytischer Desaminierung) und von Aldehyden; anscheinend kehrt die Doppelspezifität des tierischen Ferments beim Pilzferment wieder, was allerdings noch exakt zu beseisen wäre. Auch im Verhalten gegenüber Inhibitoren und Farbstoffacceptoren sowie in der aeroben Hydroperoxydbildung ähnelt die pflanzliche Xanthindehydrase der tierischen (Schardinger-Enzym); vermutlich ist sie ebenfalls ein Flavinferment.Jetzt: National Research Council of Egypt, Cairo.  相似文献

This study deals with dispersal behavior of sexuals and intraspecificvariation in queen numbers. The specific questions are: (1)Is there an association between male and female dispersal behaviorand the number of queens in a colony? (2) Is there an associationbetween individual behavior and physiological condition? (3)Do males and females from monogyne (one queen per colony) andpolygyne (several functional queens per colony) colonies differwith respect to size, weight, and physiological condition? Theresults show that both males and females are more prone to dispersein monogyne than in polygyne colonies. Moreover, males and femalesof both monogyne and polygyne colonies show dispersal polymorphism,suggesting that an increased tendency of reproductive femalesto stay in the maternal colony may cause monogyne colonies toswitch to polygyny. The propensity to disperse is associatedwith the physiological condition of individuals. Larger andheavier females containing more fat and glycogen preferentiallydisperse, whereas smaller ones with less fat and glycogen moreeasily dealate and mate without a previous nuptial flight. Maledispersal correlates positively to larger size and higher levelsof glycogen; fat contents do not increase during maturation.The females produced in monogyne colonies are larger, heavier,and contain more fat and glycogen than those produced in polygynecolonies. The males produced in monogyne colonies have relativelylonger wings and are heavier than those produced in polygynecolonies.
