Background, aim and scope  Renewable energy sources nowadays constitute an increasingly important issue in our society, basically because of the need for alternative sources of energy to fossil fuels that are free of CO2 emissions and pollution and also because of other problems such as the diminution of the reserves of these fossil fuels, their increasing prices and the economic dependence of non-producers countries on those that produce fossil fuels. One of the renewable energy sources that has experienced a bigger growth over the last years is wind power, with the introduction of new wind farms all over the world and the new advances in wind power technology. Wind power produces electrical energy from the kinetic energy of the wind without producing any pollution or emissions during the conversion process. Although wind power does not produce pollution or emissions during operation, it should be considered that there is an environmental impact due to the manufacturing process of the wind turbine and the disposal process at the end of the wind turbine life cycle, and this environmental impact should be quantified in order to compare the effects of the production of energy and to analyse the possibilities of improvement of the process from that point of view. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyse the environmental impact of wind energy technology, considering the whole life cycle of the wind power system, by means of the application of the ISO 14040 standard [ISO (1998) ISO 14040. Environmental management—life cycle assessment—principles and framework. International Standard Organization, Geneva, Switzerland], which allows quantification of the overall impact of a wind turbine and each of its component parts using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study. Materials and methods  The procedures, details, and results obtained are based on the application of the existing international standards of LCA. In addition, environmental details and indications of materials and energy consumption provided by the various companies related to the production of the component parts are certified by the application of the environmental management system ISO 14001 [ISO (2004) ISO 14001 Environmental management systems—requirements with guidance for use. International Standard Organization, Geneva, Switzerland]. A wind turbine is analysed during all the phases of its life cycle, from cradle to grave, by applying this methodology, taking into account all the processes related to the wind turbine: the production of its main components (through the incorporation of cut-off criteria), the transport to the wind farm, the subsequent installation, the start-up, the maintenance and the final dismantling and stripping down into waste materials and their treatment. The study has been developed in accordance with the ISO 14044 standard [ISO (2006) ISO 14044: Environmental management—life cycle assessment—requirements and guidelines. International Standard Organization, Geneva, Switzerland] currently in force. Results  The application of LCA, according to the corresponding international standards, has made it possible to determine and quantify the environmental impact associated with a wind turbine. On the basis of this data, the final environmental effect of the wind turbine after a lifespan of 20 years and its subsequent decommissioning have been studied. The environmental advantages of the generation of electricity using wind energy, that is, the reduction in emissions and contamination due to the use of a clean energy source, have also been evaluated. Discussion  This study concludes that the environmental pollution resulting from all the phases of the wind turbine (manufacture, start-up, use, and dismantling) during the whole of its lifetime is recovered in less than 1 year. Conclusions  From the developed LCA model, the important levels of contamination of certain materials can be obtained, for instance, the prepreg (a composite made by a mixture of epoxy resin and fibreglass). Furthermore, it has been concluded that it is possible to reduce the environmental effects of manufacturing and recycling processes of wind turbines and their components. Recommendations and perspectives  In order to achieve this goal in a fast and effective way, it is essential to enlist the cooperation of the different manufacturers.  相似文献

Breeding for durable disease resistance is challenging, yet essential to improve crops for sustainable agriculture. The wheat Lr34 gene is one of the few cloned, durable resistance genes in plants. It encodes an ATP binding cassette transporter and has been a source of resistance against biotrophic pathogens, such as leaf rust (Puccinina triticina), for over 100 years. As endogenous Lr34 confers quantitative resistance, we wanted to determine the effects of transgenic Lr34 with specific reference to how expression levels affect resistance. Transgenic Lr34 wheat lines were made in two different, susceptible genetic backgrounds. We found that the introduction of the Lr34 resistance allele was sufficient to provide comparable levels of leaf rust resistance as the endogenous Lr34 gene. As with the endogenous gene, we observed resistance in seedlings after cold treatment and in flag leaves of adult plants, as well as Lr34‐associated leaf tip necrosis. The transgene‐based Lr34 resistance did not involve a hypersensitive response, altered callose deposition or up‐regulation of PR genes. Higher expression levels compared to endogenous Lr34 were observed in the transgenic lines both at seedling as well as adult stage and some improvement of resistance was seen in the flag leaf. Interestingly, in one genetic background the transgenic Lr34‐based resistance resulted in improved seedling resistance without cold treatment. These data indicate that functional variability in Lr34‐based resistance can be created using a transgenic approach.  相似文献

While the importance of physical abilities and motor coordination is non-contested in sport, more focus has recently been turned toward cognitive processes important for different sports. However, this line of studies has often investigated sport-specific cognitive traits, while few studies have focused on general cognitive traits. We explored if measures of general executive functions can predict the success of a soccer player. The present study used standardized neuropsychological assessment tools assessing players' general executive functions including on-line multi-processing such as creativity, response inhibition, and cognitive flexibility. In a first cross-sectional part of the study we compared the results between High Division players (HD), Lower Division players (LD) and a standardized norm group. The result shows that both HD and LD players had significantly better measures of executive functions in comparison to the norm group for both men and women. Moreover, the HD players outperformed the LD players in these tests. In the second prospective part of the study, a partial correlation test showed a significant correlation between the result from the executive test and the numbers of goals and assists the players had scored two seasons later. The results from this study strongly suggest that results in cognitive function tests predict the success of ball sport players.  相似文献

Two alternative splice variants of the interleukin-1 receptor accessory protein (IL-1RAcP) mRNA are known. Membrane-bound IL-1RAcP (mIL-1RAcP) promotes intracellular interleukin-1 (IL-1) signalling whereas soluble IL-1RAcP (sIL-1RAcP) is probably an inhibitor of IL-1 signalling. Here we establish that sIL-1RAcP mRNA levels increase 16-fold in response to phorbol esters in the human hepatoma cell line HepG2 via a mechanism that depends on de novo protein synthesis. Following exposure of cells to UV light, a potent inducer of apoptosis, mIL-1RAcP mRNA is rapidly down-regulated and a new steady-state level established briefly before a gradual return to pretreatment levels. Following treatment with staurosporine, also an inducer of apoptosis, mIL-1RAcP mRNA levels steadily decrease through 72 h, with little change in sIL-1RAcP mRNA levels. A novel alternative splice variant, sIL-1RAcP-beta, was identified. Its sequence indicates that sIL-1RAcP-beta is secreted and has a unique second half of the third immunoglobulin (Ig) domain. The dramatic changes in levels of IL-1RAcP mRNAs suggest important functions in regulating sensitivity to IL-1 during stress and may play a role in oncogenic processes that are engaged during chronic inflammation.  相似文献

The integrated response to hypotonic NaCl solutions (100, 50, 25, and 0 mM NaCl) in proximal duodenum of anesthetized rats was examined. Luminal alkalinization, fluid flux, duodenal contractions, blood-to-lumen clearance of 51Cr-labeled EDTA (mucosal permeability), and perfusate osmolality were studied in the absence and presence of the cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin. In response to hypotonic solutions net fluid absorption, increases in permeability and perfusate osmolality were markedly higher in indomethacin-treated animals than in controls, and these effects were diminished by the nicotinic-receptor antagonist hexamethonium. Infusion of iloprost, a stable PGI2 analog, to indomethacin-treated animals markedly reduced the hypotonicity-induced increase in mucosal permeability and diminished the rise in perfusate osmolality. Lowering the NaCl concentration in the perfusion solution but maintaining isotonicity with mannitol had no effect on mucosal permeability. Very good linear correlations were obtained between the degree of luminal hypotonicity and the increase in permeability and between increases in permeability and perfusate osmolality. It is concluded that luminal hypotonicity increases duodenal mucosal permeability. The hypotonicity-induced increase in permeability modulated by prostaglandins and nicotinic receptors fulfills the function of increasing blood-to-lumen transport of Na+ facilitating adjustment of luminal osmolality.  相似文献

The detailed investigation of a methanolic extract of aerial parts of Achillea nobilis resulted in the isolation of 10 flavonoids. A new C-glycosylflavone, luteolin-6-C-apiofuranosyl-(1'-->2')-glucoside, was isolated besides orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, isoschaftoside, luteolin-7-O-beta-glucuronide, luteolin-4'-O-beta-glucoside and quercetin-3-O-methyl ether and two rare flavonolglycosides, quercetin-3-O-alpha-arabinosyl-(1'-->6')-glucoside and quercetin-3-O-methylether-7-O-beta-glucoside. The structures were established either by comparison with authentic substances or by UV, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic methods including 2D-NMR techniques and ESI-MS.  相似文献

In a chemotaxonomic approach the investigation of a methanolic extract of bulbs of Urginea fugax (MORIS) STEINH. resulted in the detection of several cardenolides. The structure of a novel compound, named fugaxin (1), was established as 12alpha,14beta-dihydroxy-2alpha,3beta-(tetrahydro-3',5'-dihydroxy-4'-methoxy-6'-methyl-2H-pyran-2',4'-diylbisoxy)-card-4,20-dienolide by extensive NMR spectroscopic studies including 2D-NMR techniques (COSY, HSQC, HMQC) and selective 1D experiments (NOE, TOCSY) as well as HR-ESI-MS. The chemotaxonomic relevance of the occurrence of cardenolides in the genus Urginea is discussed.  相似文献

Molecular mimicry of chemokine ligands has been described for several pathogens. Toxoplasma gondii produces a protein, cyclophilin-18 (C-18), which binds to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-receptor CCR5 and inhibits fusion and infection of T cells and macrophages by R5 viruses but not by X4 viruses. We recently identified structural determinants of C-18 required for anti-HIV activity (Yarovinsky, F., Andersen, J. F., King, L. R., Caspar, P., Aliberti, J., Golding, H., and Sher, A. (2004) J. Biol. Chem. 279, 53635-53642). Here we have elucidated the fine specificity of CCR5 residues involved in binding and HIV inhibitory potential of C-18. To delineate the regions of CCR5 involved in C-18 binding, we analyzed C-18 inhibition of cells expressing CXCR4/CCR5 chimeric receptors and CCR5 with a truncated N terminus (Delta2-19). These experiments identified a critical role for the N terminus of CCR5 in C-18 binding and anti-HIV activity. Studies with a large panel of CCR5 N-terminal peptides, including Tyr-sulfated analogues, truncated peptides, and alanine-scanning mutants, suggested that each of the 12-17 amino acids in the N terminus of CCR5 are essential for C-18 binding and inhibitory activity. Tyr sulfation did not improve C-18 reactivity. This finding is of interest because the same CCR5 N-terminal region was shown previously to play a key role in binding of HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins. The elucidation of the functional C-18-binding mechanism may help in the rational design of novel antiviral agents against HIV.  相似文献

In polygyne ants (multiple queens per colony) factors that affect the distribution and survival of queens may play a key role in shaping the population-wide mating system and colony kin structure. The aim of this paper was to study the breeding system in two populations of different age in the facultatively polygyne ant Formica fusca. Both the observed numbers of queens, and the relatedness patterns among queens, workers and colony fathers were compared in two adjacent populations (ages 17 years and > 100 years) in Southern Finland. The results showed that both the mating system and colony kin structure differed between the study populations. In the old population the relatedness among workers, queens and colony fathers was high. The queens were also related to their mates, resulting in significant inbreeding in workers, but not in queens. Finally, the number of queens per colony fluctuated between years, suggesting queen turnover, and nest-mate queens shared their reproduction unequally (reproductive skew). In the younger population relatedness among queens and workers was lower than in the old population, and the colony fathers were unrelated. Furthermore, inbreeding was absent, and no conclusive evidence was found for reproductive skew among nest-mate queens. Finally, the number of queens per colony appeared more stable between years, although queen turnover occurred also in this population. The observed differences in dispersal and mating behaviour are discussed in the light of a potential connection between population age and habitat saturation.  相似文献
