Assemblages associated with intertidal rocky shores were examined for large scale distribution patterns with specific emphasis on identifying latitudinal trends of species richness and taxonomic distinctiveness. Seventy-two sites distributed around the globe were evaluated following the standardized sampling protocol of the Census of Marine Life NaGISA project (www.nagisa.coml.org). There were no clear patterns of standardized estimators of species richness along latitudinal gradients or among Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs); however, a strong latitudinal gradient in taxonomic composition (i.e., proportion of different taxonomic groups in a given sample) was observed. Environmental variables related to natural influences were strongly related to the distribution patterns of the assemblages on the LME scale, particularly photoperiod, sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall. In contrast, no environmental variables directly associated with human influences (with the exception of the inorganic pollution index) were related to assemblage patterns among LMEs. Correlations of the natural assemblages with either latitudinal gradients or environmental variables were equally strong suggesting that neither neutral models nor models based solely on environmental variables sufficiently explain spatial variation of these assemblages at a global scale. Despite the data shortcomings in this study (e.g., unbalanced sample distribution), we show the importance of generating biological global databases for the use in large-scale diversity comparisons of rocky intertidal assemblages to stimulate continued sampling and analyses.  相似文献

Gastropod assemblages from nearshore rocky habitats were studied over large spatial scales to (1) describe broad-scale patterns in assemblage composition, including patterns by feeding modes, (2) identify latitudinal pattern of biodiversity, i.e., richness and abundance of gastropods and/or regional hotspots, and (3) identify potential environmental and anthropogenic drivers of these assemblages. Gastropods were sampled from 45 sites distributed within 12 Large Marine Ecosystem regions (LME) following the NaGISA (Natural Geography in Shore Areas) standard protocol (www.nagisa.coml.org). A total of 393 gastropod taxa from 87 families were collected. Eight of these families (9.2%) appeared in four or more different LMEs. Among these, the Littorinidae was the most widely distributed (8 LMEs) followed by the Trochidae and the Columbellidae (6 LMEs). In all regions, assemblages were dominated by few species, the most diverse and abundant of which were herbivores. No latitudinal gradients were evident in relation to species richness or densities among sampling sites. Highest diversity was found in the Mediterranean and in the Gulf of Alaska, while highest densities were found at different latitudes and represented by few species within one genus (e.g. Afrolittorina in the Agulhas Current, Littorina in the Scotian Shelf, and Lacuna in the Gulf of Alaska). No significant correlation was found between species composition and environmental variables (r≤0.355, p>0.05). Contributing variables to this low correlation included invasive species, inorganic pollution, SST anomalies, and chlorophyll-a anomalies. Despite data limitations in this study which restrict conclusions in a global context, this work represents the first effort to sample gastropod biodiversity on rocky shores using a standardized protocol across a wide scale. Our results will generate more work to build global databases allowing for large-scale diversity comparisons of rocky intertidal assemblages.  相似文献

Research on the scope and limits of non-conscious vision can advance our understanding of the functional and neural underpinnings of visual awareness. Here we investigated whether distributed local features can be bound, outside of awareness, into coherent patterns. We used continuous flash suppression (CFS) to create interocular suppression, and thus lack of awareness, for a moving dot stimulus that varied in terms of coherence with an overall pattern (radial flow). Our results demonstrate that for radial motion, coherence favors the detection of patterns of moving dots even under interocular suppression. Coherence caused dots to break through the masks more often: this indicates that the visual system was able to integrate low-level motion signals into a coherent pattern outside of visual awareness. In contrast, in an experiment using meaningful or scrambled biological motion we did not observe any increase in the sensitivity of detection for meaningful patterns. Overall, our results are in agreement with previous studies on face processing and with the hypothesis that certain features are spatiotemporally bound into coherent patterns even outside of attention or awareness.  相似文献

Intestinal and liver fatty acid binding proteins (IFABP and LFABP, respectively) are cytosolic soluble proteins with the capacity to bind and transport hydrophobic ligands between different sub-cellular compartments. Their functions are still not clear but they are supposed to be involved in lipid trafficking and metabolism, cell growth, and regulation of several other processes, like cell differentiation. Here we investigated the interaction of these proteins with different models of phospholipid membrane vesicles in order to achieve further insight into their specificity within the enterocyte. A combination of biophysical and biochemical techniques allowed us to determine affinities of these proteins to membranes, the way phospholipid composition and vesicle size and curvature modulate such interaction, as well as the effect of protein binding on the integrity of the membrane structure. We demonstrate here that, besides their apparently opposite ligand transfer mechanisms, both LFABP and IFABP are able to interact with phospholipid membranes, but the factors that modulate such interactions are different for each protein, further implying different roles for IFABP and LFABP in the intracellular context. These results contribute to the proposed central role of intestinal FABPs in the lipid traffic within enterocytes as well as in the regulation of more complex cellular processes.  相似文献

The consumption of cacao-derived (i.e., cocoa) products provides beneficial cardiovascular effects in healthy subjects as well as individuals with endothelial dysfunction such as smokers, diabetics, and postmenopausal women. The vascular actions of cocoa are related to enhanced nitric oxide (NO) production. These actions can be reproduced by the administration of the cacao flavanol (-)-epicatechin (EPI). To further understand the mechanisms behind the vascular action of EPI, we investigated the effects of Ca(2+) depletion on endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) activation/phosphorylation and translocation. Human coronary artery endothelial cells were treated with EPI or with bradykinin (BK), a well-known Ca(2+)-dependent eNOS activator. Results demonstrate that both EPI and BK induce increases in intracellular calcium and NO levels. However, under Ca(2+)-free conditions, EPI (but not BK) is still capable of inducing NO production through eNOS phosphorylation at serine 615, 633, and 1177. Interestingly, EPI-induced translocation of eNOS from the plasmalemma was abolished upon Ca(2+) depletion. Thus, under Ca(2+)-free conditions, EPI can stimulate NO synthesis independent of calmodulin binding to eNOS and of its translocation into the cytoplasm. We also examined the effect of EPI on the NO/cGMP/vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP) pathway activation in isolated Ca(2+)-deprived canine mesenteric arteries. Results demonstrate that under these conditions, EPI induces the activation of this vasorelaxation-related pathway and that this effect is inhibited by pretreatment with nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, suggesting a functional relevance for this phenomenon.  相似文献

Phosphorylcholine phosphatase (PchP) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a product of the PA5292 gene, catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphocholine to choline and inorganic phosphate (Pi). Phosphocholine is produced after hemolytic phospholipase C (PlcH) acts upon phosphatidylcholine or sphingomyelin. Therefore, PlcH and PchP are involved in the pathogenesis of P. aeruginosa. PchP belongs to the HAD superfamily as it contains three conserved sequences motifs. In mature PchP, the motifs I, II, and III are (31)DMDNT(35), (166)S, and (261)GDTPDSD(267), respectively. Kinetic characterization of wild-type and mutated proteins, obtained by site-directed mutagenesis, in addition to a molecular model of PchP helped us to understand the contribution of key residues in the conserved motifs I, II and III that are involved in the catalysis of p-nitrophenylphosphate processing after the addition of Mg(2+), Zn(2+) or Cu(2+) (these are activators of PchP activity). Our results are explained by invoking the concept of chemical hardness and softness introduced by Pearson in 1963 and its extension that "hard acids prefer to coordinate to hard bases and soft acids to soft bases" [Parr and Pearson, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 105, 7512-7516 (1983)].  相似文献

Manipulative experiments are increasingly used to establish causal connections between biodiversity and productivity or other measures describing the functioning of ecological systems. Many studies have detected significant effects of changing the number of species in experimental treatments on productivity and other response variables, but interpretation of these results is complicated by difficulties in separating effects of number, identity and relative density of species. A variety of experimental designs has been proposed to circumvent these problems, but no approach has been developed to address all these problems simultaneously. Rocky shore ecology has contributed relatively little to this debate, despite a long tradition of experimental manipulations of species in this environment. Here, I illustrate exemplars of biodiversity and biodiversity-like experiments in rocky shore habitats, to derive lessons for future experimental analyses of biodiversity in marine coastal systems. It is found that the principles underlying modern experiments on biodiversity have been available for a long time, being developed in studies of competition among intertidal gastropods more than 20 years ago, but have been largely overlooked by aquatic and terrestrial ecologists. Building on these principles, I propose a design of experiment that can discriminate among effects of number, identity and density of species in highly diverse assemblages. Possible applications of this approach to the analysis of biodiversity and its effects on the ability of assemblages to withstand disturbances are discussed.  相似文献

The changes in pectic and hemicellulosic polysaccharides of hypocotyl cell walls during the growth of intact seedlings of Pinus pinaster Aiton were investigated, α -Cellulose and the water-soluble hemicellulose presented the most conspicuous changes during hypocotyl growth. The relative amount of the water-soluble hemicellulose decreased from day 7 to day 13 when hypocotyls were in the rapid growth phase, and stabilized when hypocotyl growth ceased. In this fraction, the relative amount of non-cellulosic glucose decreased dramatically during hypocotyl growth, while the relative amount of xylose increased. We suggest that these changes may be due to partial degradation of xyloglucan present in the water:soluble hemicellulose fraction, accompanied by the synthesis of a xylan.  相似文献
