It’s a knockout: CCN3 suppresses neointimal thickening

The role of CCN proteins in vivo is only just becoming understood. A prototypical member of the CCN family, CCN3 suppresses proliferation. In a study in press, Shimoyama and colleagues show that mice lacking CCN3 have a hyperproliferative response to vascular injury. These data, along with other recent observations, suggest that CCN3 may represent a novel therapy for hyperproliferative diseases.     

Morphological embedding and phonetic reduction: the case of triconstituent compounds

In this paper we propose that the internal bracketing of a word with more than two morphemes is reflected in the phonetic implementation. We hypothesize that embedded forms show more phonetic reduction than forms at higher structural levels (‘Embedded Reduction Hypothesis’). This paper tests the prediction of the Embedded Reduction Hypothesis with triconstituent compounds. The analysis of the durational properties of almost 500 compound tokens shows that there is a lengthening effect on the non-embedded constituent, and a shortening effect on the adjacent embedded constituent. Yet, this predicted effect of embedding interacts with other lexical factors, above all the bigram frequency of the embedded compound. At a theoretical level, these effects mean that the durational properties of the cross-boundary constituents are indicative of the hierarchical structure and of the strength of the internal boundary of triconstituent compounds. Hence, morphological structure is reflected in the speech signal.     

Einfluß von Epicoccum nigrum,Alternaria alternata,Mucor racemosus und Ulocladium chartarum auf die Protozoenpopulation im Pansen des Rindes (in vitro)

The influence of moulded hay (Alternaria alternata, Epicoccum nigrum, Mucor racemosus, Ulocladium chartarum) and the efficiency of Vitamin B1 substitution to cope these effects on rumen protozoa was investigated using the longterm rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC) for about 25 days. Moulded hay affected medium-sized protozoa to a different extent (Alternaria alternata: ?16 %, Epicoccum nigrum: ?27 %, Mucor racemosus: ?9 %, Ulocladium chartarum: +2 %). The vitamin B1 substitution had positive effects during the feeding of Mucor racemosus and Ulocladium chartarum.     

The mouse Fc receptor for IgG (Ly-17) : molecular cloning and specificity

A cDNA clone encoding the mouse Ly-17⁺ Fc receptor for IgG, isolated from a myelomonocytic cell line, was sequenced and expression of mRNA and the functional FcR investigated. The receptor is a 301 amino acid transmembrane glycoprotein with two homologous extracellular domains that are also homologous to members of the Ig superfamily. The receptor has four sites of N-linked glycosylation and a long 94 amino acid cytoplasmic tail. Northern analysis, immune complex binding, and serological studies demonstrate that the receptor encoded by the cDNA clone binds mouse IgG_1/2b and rabbit IgG complexes.     

Characterization of phycoerythrin-containing Synechococcus spp. populations by immunofluorescence

Using an immunofluorescence assay developed to identify serogroups(i.e. clusters of strains labelled by one antiserum), the compositionof natural populations of phycoerythrin-containing Synechococcusspp. was examined. The 7803 (open ocean clone)-serogroup wasfound in most oceanic regions, but was most prevalent (up to85%) in tropical and subtropical waters during spring and summer.At coastal Long Island stations it was most abundant (up to65%) when water temperatures were >22°C. The seasonaland geographic distribution of the 7803-serogroup appeared tobe limited by water temperature. No consistent pattern was observedin the per cent composition with depth in the Sargasso Sea orat coastal to offshore stations in the North-west Atlantic Oceanor eastern tropical North Pacific Ocean. The 8016 (coastal clone)-serogroupwas abundant at coastal and estuarine stations off Long Island(up to 95 %) and its appearance was also correlated with warmwater temperature (> 15°C). However, this serogroup remaineda constant proportion of the population at the Long Island Soundstation during early winter months (through January) when abundanceof the 7803-serogroup was negligible. Owing to limited data,the oceanic distribution of the 8016-serogroup is not yet discernible.Lastly, antisera to the phycocyanin-dominant Synechococcus spp.clones failed to label any cells in samples collected from severaloceanic stations. Thus, these strains appear to be limited tocoastal and estuarine regions, which is consistent with predictionsfrom experiments comparing the photosynthetic performance ofthe phycoerythrin-dominant and phycocyanin-dominant clones. ¹Present address: Department of Oceanography, University ofHawaii, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA
