Summary Diets of nesting Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) and Ferruginous Hawks (Buteo regalis) were sampled before and after a decline in the hawks' principal prey species. Diets of pairs that shared their foraging ranges with interspecifics were contrasted with those of pairs whose home ranges did not overlap with interspecifics. Current theory predicts that diets should diverge during prey shortages and that overlap should be especially reduced in ranges shared with interspecifics. Species composition of the two hawks' diets diverged during the prey shortage, but the divergence was most pronounced in hawks that did not share foraging ranges with interspecifics. In contrast to predictions, the two species converged on similar-sized prey during the prey shortage. Available data on differences in habitat composition and prey availability at the sample sites did not explain the deviations from the predicted response. Although our findings on diet shifts differ from those of most other studies, the implications are consistent with observations of others who have studied assemblages of mammal-feeding raptors. We conclude that diet composition of the hawks we studied was not directly affected by interspecific competition and that shifts in diet overlap during prey shortages do not necessarily imply that interspecific competition is occurring. 相似文献

The dominating fatty acdis were fewer in the exudate than in the roots. Unsaturated fatty acids were predominant. 1. A high cholesterol diet caused guinea pig erythrocytes to become sensitive to lysis by cholesterol oxidase (CO), a protein not hemolytic to normal cells. 2. A cadaver represents a temporal energy‐loaded resource, which provides arthropods with food, protection and a place in which to find a mate. Insects are usually the first organisms to discover and colonize a cadaver; as decomposition progresses, insects colonize cadavers in a predictable sequence. This work aimed to establish cadaverous entomofauna relationships with regard to stages of decomposition and environmental conditions using multiple correspondence analysis and thereby to identify the way in which insects distribute a perishable and changing resource. Entomofauna were thus collected in a semi‐rural area near Bogotá from the cadavers of three pigs (Sus scrofa L.) which had been shot. Environmental variables were recorded for each sampling. Multiple correspondence analyses were carried out for adult forms belonging to Diptera and Coleoptera families and stages of decomposition, and for Diptera and Coleoptera adult forms and environmental conditions. Stages of decomposition were a primary determining factor for structuring four guilds of entomofauna. However, environmental conditions influenced insect activity and were therefore a relevant factor in the structure of the entomofauna community. The genes encoding the six polypeptide components of the alkene monooxygenase from Xanthobacter Py2 have been sequenced. The predicted amino acid sequence of the first ORF shows homology with the iron binding subunits of binuclear non-haem iron containing monooxygenases including benzene monooxygenase, toluene 4-monooxygenase (>60% sequence similarity) and methane monooxygenase (>40% sequence similarity) and that the necessary sequence motifs associated with iron co-ordination are also present. Secondary structure prediction based on the amino acid sequence showed that the predominantly α-helical structure that surrounds the binuclear iron binding site was conserved allowing the sequence to be modelled on the co-ordinates of the methane monooxygenase α-subunit. Significant differences in the residues forming the hydrophobic cavity which forms the substrate binding site are discussed with reference to the differences in reaction specificity and stereospecificity of binuclear non-haem iron monooxygenases. 相似文献
