It is well known that prey of different size and morphology often use different antipredator strategies. The prevailing notion is that this occurs because size, morphology and weaponry determine the relative effectiveness of alternative strategies, and nowhere is this assumption more entrenched than in our view of the basic decision to stay, fight or flee. Here, we use observations of coyote (Canis latrans) packs hunting deer in winter to show that two ungulates of similar size and morphology, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (O. hemionus), use different antipredator strategies when encountered or attacked. Mule deer typically responded by holding their ground and aggressively defending conspecifics, and were at high risk of being attacked and killed if they fled or were undefended. White-tails always fled when pursued or attacked by coyotes. Coyotes pursued fewer white-tails than mule deer they encountered regardless of prey response. Once pursued or attacked, white-tails faced a risk of attack and capture, respectively, that was intermediate between the high and low risk mule deer groups. The overall risk of capture per encounter for white-tails was similar to that facing mule deer that confronted coyotes, which was much lower than risk facing mule deer that fled and were undefended. Contextual variables such as the opportunity to improve one's position by joining another group, moving to rugged terrain, or the presence of companions that are willing to provide defense may explain why a mixed strategy is maintained in mule deer, despite the apparently detrimental effects of flight. These examples illustrate the value of including prey behavior in models of hunting success in so far as prey defenses may not be coupled with differences in size and morphology.  相似文献

Background  

Plant growth-promoting bacteria can alleviate the inhibitory effects of various heavy metals on plant growth, via decreasing levels of stress-induced ethylene. However, little has been done to detect any mechanisms specific for heavy metal resistance of this kind of bacteria. Here, we investigate the response of the wild-type plant growth-promoting bacterium Pseudomonas putida UW4 to nickel stress using proteomic approaches. The mutant strain P. putida UW4/AcdS-, lacking a functional 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase gene, was also assessed for its response to nickel stress.  相似文献

A family of auxiliary beta subunits coassemble with Slo alpha subunit to form Ca(2)+-regulated, voltage-activated BK-type K(+) channels. The beta subunits play an important role in regulating the functional properties of the resulting channel protein, including apparent Ca(2)+ dependence and inactivation. The beta3b auxiliary subunit, when coexpressed with the Slo alpha subunit, results in a particularly rapid ( approximately 1 ms), but incomplete inactivation, mediated by the cytosolic NH(2) terminus of the beta3b subunit (Xia et al. 2000). Here, we evaluate whether a simple block of the open channel by the NH(2)-terminal domain accounts for the inactivation mechanism. Analysis of the onset of block, recovery from block, time-dependent changes in the shape of instantaneous current-voltage curves, and properties of deactivation tails suggest that a simple, one step blocking reaction is insufficient to explain the observed currents. Rather, blockade can be largely accounted for by a two-step blocking mechanism (C(n) <---> O(n) <---> O(*)(n) <---> I(n)) in which preblocked open states (O*(n)) precede blocked states (I(n)). The transitions between O* and I are exceedingly rapid accounting for an almost instantaneous block or unblock of open channels observed with changes in potential. However, the macroscopic current relaxations are determined primarily by slower transitions between O and O*. We propose that the O to O* transition corresponds to binding of the NH(2)-terminal inactivation domain to a receptor site. Blockade of current subsequently reflects either additional movement of the NH(2)-terminal domain into a position that hinders ion permeation or a gating transition to a closed state induced by binding of the NH(2) terminus.  相似文献

Mutational analyses have suggested that BK channels are regulated by three distinct divalent cation-dependent regulatory mechanisms arising from the cytosolic COOH terminus of the pore-forming alpha subunit. Two mechanisms account for physiological regulation of BK channels by microM Ca2+. The third may mediate physiological regulation by mM Mg2+. Mutation of five aspartate residues (5D5N) within the so-called Ca2+ bowl removes a portion of a higher affinity Ca2+ dependence, while mutation of D362A/D367A in the first RCK domain also removes some higher affinity Ca2+ dependence. Together, 5D5N and D362A/D367A remove all effects of Ca2+ up through 1 mM while E399A removes a portion of low affinity regulation by Ca2+/Mg2+. If each proposed regulatory effect involves a distinct divalent cation binding site, the divalent cation selectivity of the actual site that defines each mechanism might differ. By examination of the ability of various divalent cations to activate currents in constructs with mutationally altered regulatory mechanisms, here we show that each putative regulatory mechanism exhibits a unique sensitivity to divalent cations. Regulation mediated by the Ca2+ bowl can be activated by Ca2+ and Sr2+, while regulation defined by D362/D367 can be activated by Ca2+, Sr2+, and Cd2+. Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ produce little observable effect through the high affinity regulatory mechanisms, while all six divalent cations enhance activation through the low affinity mechanism defined by residue E399. Furthermore, each type of mutation affects kinetic properties of BK channels in distinct ways. The Ca2+ bowl mainly accelerates activation of BK channels at low [Ca2+], while the D362/D367-related high affinity site influences both activation and deactivation over the range of 10-300 microM Ca2+. The major kinetic effect of the E399-related low affinity mechanism is to slow deactivation at mM Mg2+ or Ca2+. The results support the view that three distinct divalent-cation binding sites mediate regulation of BK channels.  相似文献

Juvenile survival is a highly variable life‐history trait that is critical to population growth. Antipredator tactics, including an animal's use of its physical and social environment, are critical to juvenile survival. Here, we tested the hypothesis that habitat and social characteristics influence coyote (Canis latrans) predation on white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (O. hemionus) fawns in similar ways during the neonatal period. This would contrast to winter when the habitat and social characteristics that provide the most safety for each species differ. We monitored seven cohorts of white‐tailed deer and mule deer fawns at a grassland study site in Alberta, Canada. We used logistic regression and a model selection procedure to determine how habitat characteristics, climatic conditions, and female density influenced fawn survival during the first 8 weeks of life. Fawn survival improved after springs with productive vegetation (high integrated Normalized Difference Vegetation Index values). Fawns that used steeper terrain were more likely to survive. Fawns of both species had improved survival in years with higher densities of mule deer females, but not with higher densities of white‐tailed deer females, as predicted if they benefit from protection by mule deer. Our results suggest that topographical variation is a critical resource for neonates of many ungulate species, even species like white‐tailed deer that use more gentle terrain when older. Further, our results raise the possibility that neonatal white‐tailed fawns may benefit from associating with mule deer females, which may contribute to the expansion of white‐tailed deer into areas occupied by mule deer.  相似文献

The effects of expressing a chimeric gene consisting of a soybean heat shock gene promoter and a sequence that encodes an enzyme catalyzing the synthesis of a potent phytohormone, the cytokinin iPMP, have been analyzed in transgenic tobacco plants. The production of cytokinin endogenously produced several effects previously undocumented. The differentiation of shoots independent of exogenous cytokinin from heat-treated transgenic plant leaf explants demonstrates that long-term heat treatments do not interfere with complex developmental processes. This extends the potential usefulness of heat shock gene promoters to conditionally express genes during windows of development that span several weeks.  相似文献

Sucrose metabolism and IAA and ethylene production in muskmelon ovaries   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Changes induced by the pollination of ovaries may be mediated by phytohormones and involve sudar-mediated by phytohormones and involve sugar-metabolizing enzymes. In order to further explore these relationships, soluble sugars, sucrose-phosphate synthase (EC 2.4.1.14), sucrose synthase (EC 2.4.1.13), acid and neutral invertases (EC 3.2.1.26), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and ethylene were investigated in muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) ovaries sampled before, during, and after anthesis. The fresh weight of ovaries increased 100% within 48 h after pollination, but did not change significantly in the absence of pollination. While sugar content per ovary increased after pollination, sugar content per mg protein was unaffected. Sucrose was not detected in nonpollinated ovaries 48 h after anthesis. Free IAA content was highest in ovaries sampled 48h before anthesis. Pollination had no immediate effect on IAA content per mg protein in postanthesis ovaries. Although detected in all ovaries sampled, ethylene production increased significantly only in nonpollinated ovaries. Activity of sucrose-phosphate synthase was the same at all stages. The specific activities of sucrose synthase and the invertases were highest in nonpollinated ovaries. The increase in rate of sugar import into ovaries following pollination was not accompanied by an increase in the specific activity of any enzyme assayed, but was coincident with an increase in the total activity per ovary of surcose synthase and acid invertase. There appears to be no direct relationship between sucrose-metabolizing enzymes, IAA or ethylene in developing pollinated ovaries but the increase in sucrose cleavage activity in nonpollinated ovaries may be related to the increase in ethylene production.Mention of a specfic product does not imply an endorsement by the United States Depertment of Agriculture or Texas Aricultural Experiment Station over other suitable products.  相似文献
