“The Origins of Genome Architecture” by Michael Lynch (2007) may not immediately sound like a book that someone interested in the philosophy of biology would grab off the shelf. But there are three important reasons why you should read this book. Firstly, if you want to understand biological evolution, you should have at least a passing familiarity with evolutionary change at the level of the genome. This is not to say that everyone interested in evolution should be a geneticist or a bioinformatician, but that a working knowledge of genetic change is an essential part of the intellectual toolkit of modern evolutionary biology, even if your primary focus is the evolution of behaviour or the diversity of communities. Secondly, this book provides excellent examples of another important tool in the biologist’s intellectual toolkit, but one that is rarely explained or illustrated to such an extent: null (or neutral) models. The role null models play in testing hypotheses in evolution is a central focus of this book. Thirdly, as an accomplished work of advocacy for a strictly microevolutionary view of evolution, this book provides grist for the mill for the important debate about whether population genetic processes are the sine qua non of evolutionary explanations. 相似文献

Prevalence and evolution of core photosystem II genes in marine cyanobacterial viruses and their hosts 下载免费PDF全文
Cyanophages (cyanobacterial viruses) are important agents of horizontal gene transfer among marine cyanobacteria, the numerically dominant photosynthetic organisms in the oceans. Some cyanophage genomes carry and express host-like photosynthesis genes, presumably to augment the host photosynthetic machinery during infection. To study the prevalence and evolutionary dynamics of this phenomenon, 33 cultured cyanophages of known family and host range and viral DNA from field samples were screened for the presence of two core photosystem reaction center genes, psbA and psbD . Combining this expanded dataset with published data for nine other cyanophages, we found that 88% of the phage genomes contain psbA, and 50% contain both psbA and psbD . The psbA gene was found in all myoviruses and Prochlorococcus podoviruses, but could not be amplified from Prochlorococcus siphoviruses or Synechococcus podoviruses. Nearly all of the phages that encoded both psbA and psbD had broad host ranges. We speculate that the presence or absence of psbA in a phage genome may be determined by the length of the latent period of infection. Whether it also carries psbD may reflect constraints on coupling of viral- and host-encoded PsbA–PsbD in the photosynthetic reaction center across divergent hosts. Phylogenetic clustering patterns of these genes from cultured phages suggest that whole genes have been transferred from host to phage in a discrete number of events over the course of evolution (four for psbA, and two for psbD ), followed by horizontal and vertical transfer between cyanophages. Clustering patterns of psbA and psbD from Synechococcus cells were inconsistent with other molecular phylogenetic markers, suggesting genetic exchanges involving Synechococcus lineages. Signatures of intragenic recombination, detected within the cyanophage gene pool as well as between hosts and phages in both directions, support this hypothesis. The analysis of cyanophage psbA and psbD genes from field populations revealed significant sequence diversity, much of which is represented in our cultured isolates. Collectively, these findings show that photosynthesis genes are common in cyanophages and that significant genetic exchanges occur from host to phage, phage to host, and within the phage gene pool. This generates genetic diversity among the phage, which serves as a reservoir for their hosts, and in turn influences photosystem evolution. 相似文献

Vibrio vulnificus is a serious opportunistic human pathogen commonly found in subtropical coastal waters, and is the leading cause of seafood-borne
mortality in the USA. This taxon does not sustain prolonged presence in clinical or agricultural settings, where it would
undergo human-induced selection for antibiotic resistance. Therefore, few studies have verified the effectiveness of commonly
prescribed antibiotics in V. vulnificus treatment. Here we screened 151 coastal isolates and 10 primary septicaemia isolates against 26 antimicrobial agents representing
diverse modes of action. The frequency of multiple resistances to antibiotics from all sources was unexpectedly high, particularly
during summer months, and a substantial proportion of isolates (17.3%) were resistant to eight or more antimicrobial agents.
Numerous isolates demonstrated resistance to antibiotics routinely prescribed for V. vulnificus infections, such as doxycycline, tetracycline, aminoglycosides and cephalosporins. These resistances were detected at similar
frequencies in virulent and non-virulent strains (PCR-based virulence typing) and were present in septicaemia isolates, underlying
the public health implications of our findings. Among environmental isolates, there were no consistent differences in the
frequency of resistance between pristine and anthropogenically impacted estuaries, suggesting natural rather than human-derived
sources of resistance traits. This report is the first to demonstrate prevalent antibiotic resistance in a human pathogen
with no clinical reservoirs, implying the importance of environmental studies in understanding the spread, evolution and public
health relevance of antibiotic resistance factors.

Thirteen cows of the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) were subjected to bilateral oophorectomy in the period 105–251 days of pregnancy. Eleven of the animals delivered their fetuses before the expected day of parturition, while 2 which were oophorectomized on days 205 and 212 calved at the expected time. Eleven of the cows had retained fetal membranes following abortion/ parturition. Following surgery the peripheral plasma levels of progesterone dropped to levels about 10 % of the pretreatment levels. Animals oophorectomized between days 105 and 157 of pregnancy had a lower postsurgical progesterone concentration than cows operated on at days 205–251 of pregnancy. No increase of the peripheral plasma levels of estrone in connection with abortion was seen in cows operated on in early stages of pregnancy (< 200 days) while those operated on in later stages and maintaining the pregnancy for at least 17 days post oophorectomy showed an increase of estrone before parturition. The 2 cows that calved at the expected time had an increase of prepartum estrone similar to that seen at spontaneous calving. 相似文献

Background and Aims Salt tolerance has evolved many times independently in different plant groups. One possible explanation for this pattern is that it builds upon a general suite of stress-tolerance traits. If this is the case, then we might expect a correlation between salt tolerance and other tolerances to different environmental stresses. This association has been hypothesized for salt and alkalinity tolerance. However, a major limitation in investigating large-scale patterns of these tolerances is that lists of known tolerant species are incomplete. This study explores whether species’ salt and alkalinity tolerance can be predicted using geochemical modelling for Australian grasses. The correlation between taxa found in conditions of high predicted salinity and alkalinity is then assessed. Methods Extensive occurrence data for Australian grasses is used together with geochemical modelling to predict values of pH and electrical conductivity to which species are exposed in their natural distributions. Using parametric and phylogeny-corrected tests, the geochemical predictions are evaluated using a list of known halophytes as a control, and it is determined whether taxa that occur in conditions of high predicted salinity are also found in conditions of high predicted alkalinity.Key Results It is shown that genera containing known halophytes have higher predicted salinity conditions than those not containing known halophytes. Additionally, taxa occurring in high predicted salinity tend to also occur in high predicted alkalinity. Conclusions Geochemical modelling using species’ occurrence data is a potentially useful approach to predict species’ relative natural tolerance to challenging environmental conditions. The findings also demonstrate a correlation between salinity tolerance and alkalinity tolerance. Further investigations can consider the phylogenetic distribution of specific traits involved in these ecophysiological strategies, ideally by incorporating more complete, finer-scale geochemical information, as well as laboratory experiments. 相似文献

The regulation of innate immune responses during viral infection is a crucial step to promote antiviral reactions. Recent studies have drawn attention to a strong relationship of pathogen-associated molecular pattern recognition with autophagy for activation of APC function. Our initial observations indicated that autophagosomes formed in response to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection of dendritic cells (DC). To further investigate whether RSV-induced DC activation and innate cytokine production were associated with autophagy, we used several methods to block autophagosome formation. Using 3-MA, small interfering RNA inhibition of LC3, or Beclin(+/-) mouse-derived DC, studies established a relationship between RSV-induced autophagy and enhanced type I IFN, TNF, IL-6, and IL-12p40 expression. Moreover, autophagosome formation induced by starvation also promoted innate cytokine expression in DC. The induction of starvation-induced autophagy in combination with RSV infection synergistically enhanced DC cytokine expression that was blocked by an autophagy inhibitor. The latter synergistic responses were differentially altered in DC from MyD88(-/-) and TRIF(-/-) mice, supporting the concept of autophagy-mediated TLR signaling. In addition, blockade of autophagy in RSV-infected DC inhibited the maturation of DC as assessed by MHC class II and costimulatory molecule expression. Subsequently, we demonstrated that inhibition of autophagy in DC used to stimulate primary OVA-induced and secondary RSV-infected responses significantly attenuated cytokine production by CD4(+) T cells. Thus, these studies have outlined that autophagy in DC after RSV infection is a crucial mechanism for driving innate cytokine production, leading to altered acquired immune responses. 相似文献

The Phylogenetic Association Between Salt Tolerance and Heavy Metal Hyperaccumulation in Angiosperms
Salt tolerance and heavy metal hyperaccumulation are two rare plant abilities that are heavily studied for their potential to contribute to agricultural sustainability and phytoremediation in response to anthropogenic environmental change. Several observations suggest that it is worth investigating the link between the abilities to tolerate high levels of soil salinity or accumulate more of a particular heavy metal from the soil than most plants. Firstly, several angiosperm families are known to contain both salt tolerant plants (halophytes) and heavy metal hyperaccumulators. Secondly, some halophytes can also accumulate heavy metals. Thirdly, although salinity tolerance and heavy metal hyperaccumulation typically require many physiological or anatomical changes, both have apparently evolved many times in angiosperms and among closely related species. We test for a significant relationship between halophytes and hyperaccumulators in angiosperms using taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses. We test whether there are more angiosperm families with both halophytes and hyperaccumulators than expected by chance, and whether there are more species identified as both halophyte and hyperaccumulator than if the abilities were unconnected. We also test whether halophytes and hyperaccumulators are phylogenetically clustered among species in seven angiosperm families. We find a significant association between halophytes and hyperaccumulators among angiosperm families and that there are significantly more species identified as both halophytes and hyperaccumulators than expected. Halophytes and hyperaccumulators each show low phylogenetic clustering, suggesting these abilities can vary among closely related species. In Asteraceae, Amaranthaceae, Fabaceae, and Poaceae, halophytes and hyperaccumulators are more closely related than if the two traits evolved independently. 相似文献

Theoretical and empirical data suggest that genes located on sex chromosomes may play an important role both for sexually selected traits and for traits involved in the build‐up of hybrid incompatibilities. We investigated patterns of genetic variation in 73 genes located on the Z chromosomes of two species of the flycatcher genus Ficedula, the pied flycatcher and the collared flycatcher. Sequence data were evaluated for signs of selection potentially related to genomic differentiation in these young sister species, which hybridize despite reduced fitness of hybrids. Seven loci were significantly more divergent between the two species than expected under neutrality and they also displayed reduced nucleotide diversity, consistent with having been influenced by directional selection. Two of the detected candidate regions contain genes that are associated with plumage coloration in birds. Plumage characteristics play an important role in species recognition in these flycatchers suggesting that the detected genes may have been involved in the evolution of sexual isolation between the species. 相似文献
