Summary Coenobita clypeatus were tested on an underwater inclined plane in order to determine their behavioral threshold for perceiving slope, and to investigate the relative importance of input from the statocyst organ and from the weight of the body and gastropod shell on upward orienting ability. The shell's weight was compensated for by a neutral float and increased by weights. The crabs perceive an inclination of less than 5°, and do so with increasing certainty as the slope increases. Perception of the slope seems to be both by statocyst and proprioceptive input, but the latter is not essential for upward orientation.  相似文献

Summary A 76-year-old woman with acute myelogenous leukemia with approximately 65% myeloblasts on bone marrow examination was treated daily with a combination of 4 megaU of leukocyte interferon IM and 1,000 mg cimetidine PO. During therapy there was a gradual decrease of bone marrow myeloblasts down to 9% and a normalization of peripheral white blood cells. The treatment was discontinued after 6 weeks because of increasing fatigue and anorexia. The general condition improved greatly during the following weeks and the patient entered complete remission, which has continued for 6 months so far. In the course of therapy there was a gradual appearance of antibodies showing a selective binding capacity to autochthonous leukemic cells with no tendency to increased binding to remission cells. The aim of this report is to stimulate a further evaluation of this form of therapy in additional AML patients whenever this might be justified as an alternative to conventional chemotherapy.  相似文献

The specificity of thermitase (EC 3.4.21.14), a microbial thermostable serine proteinase fromThermoactinomyces vulgaris, with several oligo- and polypeptide substrates was investigated. Preferred hydrolysis of peptide bonds with a hydrophobic amino acid at the carboxylic site was observed. The proved carboxypeptidolytic splitting of Leu5-enkephalin and bradykinin, as well as the noncleavability of casomorphins by thermitase, can be explained by the position of the glycine and proline residues in these substrates. Major cleavage sites in the oxidized insulin B chain in a 15-min incubation with thermitase at Gln4-His5, Ser9-His10, Leu11-Val12, Leu15-Tyr16 and in the oxidized insulin A chain at Cys SO3H11-Ser12, Leu13-Tyr14, and Leu16-Glu17 were observed. Additional cleavages of the bonds His5-Leu6, Arg22-Gly23, Phe24-Phe25, Phe25-Tyr26, and Tyr26-Thr27 in the oxidized B chain and Cys SO3H6-Cys SO3H7 and Tyr19-Cys SO3H20 in the oxidized A chain in 2-h incubations with thermitase were also noted. Hydrolysis of salmine A I component in a 10-min incubation was observed mainly at four peptide bonds: Arg5-Ser6, Ser6-Ser7, Arg18-Val19, and Gly27-Gly28. The cleavage sites of thermitase in both insulin chains were similar to those reported in the studies of subtilisins.  相似文献

The usefulness of hybridization by protoplast fusion and mitotic segregation for the genetic analysis of the imperfect fodder yeastCandida maltosa was tested. Mitotically stable fusion hybrids were obtained with frequencies between 10–6 and 10–7. Complementation tests were performed by protoplast fusion. Substances that are known to induce frequent mitotic segregation in other yeast species such as benomyl, p-fluorophenylalanine, and acriflavine were ineffective inC. maltosa. UV irradiation induced mitotic segregation in up to 10%. This agent induced mainly mitotic crossing over inC. maltosa. Our data enabled the construction of the linkage group I with the sequenceCEN-ade-26-pro-1.  相似文献

Immunological studies of Fe-containing superoxide dismutase (FeSOD) and glutamine synthetase (GS) have established a close relationship betweenOceanospirillum linum (the type species of the genus),O. beijerinckii, Alteromonas communis, A. vaga, and two unnamed species of marine bacteria (groups H-1 and I-1). The four latter species have, consequently, been assigned to the genusOceanospirillum asO. commune comb. nov.,O. vagum comb. nov.,O. kriegii sp. nov. (group H-1; type strain 197, ATCC 27133), andO. jannaschii sp. nov. (group I-1; type strain 207, ATCC 27135). The phenotypic properties of these species are presented together with their distinguishing traits.  相似文献

Seven microbial peptide inhibitors—chymostatin, antipain, elastatinal, leupeptin, pepstatin, bestatin, and phosphoramidon—were tested for their efficiency to inhibit thermitase, a thermostable serine protease fromThermoactinomyces vulgaris. Chymostatin and antipain were the most effective inhibitors, with Ki values of 7×10–8 M and 2×10–7 M, respectively. Except for leupeptin, all inhibitors resist hydrolysis by thermitase. Leupeptin, however, is cleaved by thermitase between the two leucylresidues. Further, a close relationship in specificity between thermitase and subtilisin BPN and their distinct discrimination from elastase specificity was demonstrated by using these inhibitors.  相似文献

An increase in the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity inStreptococcus lactis was observed when the cells were grown at increased oxygen partial pressures or exposed to hyperbaric oxygen tensions. The NADH-oxidase/NADH-peroxidase activities inS. lactis increased in galactose-grown cells when cultivated in air compared with N2/CO2. This effect did not occur when glucose was the carbon source; however, an increase in the activities of these enzymes was observed in oxygen atmosphere. The correlation between SOD, NADH-oxidase/NADH-peroxidase, and the metabolic pathways involved is discussed. The effect of manganese on the SOD activity is also considered.  相似文献

1. Nonlinear second order white-noise analysis has been applied to the isolated frog muscle spindle. Power (2) of the Gaussian white noise (GWN) and the average prestretch level L were varied and the response of both the isolated receptor potential (transducer) and the action potential (encoder) level were analysed. 2. The standard white-noise method is briefly presented. Particular emphasis, however, is put on the limitations in the range of validity of the method and, consequently, on the use and interpretation of the kernels as a Wiener model. Conclusions in the present paper are within this frame and are mainly of qualitative nature. 3. The analysis reveals that the nonlinear contributions of the model are essential for approximating physiological results, thus ruling out purely linear modelling for this receptor organ. 4. The dependence of the transducer kernels on are compatible with the behaviour of a rectifier. Rectification is represented by the lack of hyperpolarization within the isolated receptor potential and is enhanced by the substantial memory in the linear and nonlinear kernels as demonstrated by their extent in time. This is equivalent to low power in high frequencies of the response. Obviously, the hyperpolarizing potentials following each spike counteract the long transducer memory. 5. At the encoder level the memory of the system is strongly reduced. This is achieved by using predominantly high frequency components of the receptor potential for triggering the process of impulse generation, and by the precise coupling and high frequency content of the impulses. This coupling precision is possible because of the sensitivity of the spike-generating mechanism to steep rising transients of the receptor potential and also owing to the reduction in transducer memory by the hyperpolarizing afferpotentials. 6. The preference given to the high frequency components is also read from the structure of the second order transducer kernel and from both the linear and the second order encoder kernels, which allows the most effective input waveform for triggering action potentials to be determined. 6. When the operating point is changed to higher prestretch values, kernel heights increase strongly implying higher response strength of the muscle spindle. The kernel structure is changed as well in the direction of reducing the effective memory already at the level of the receptor potentials, probably a means to prevent too high depolarization values.  相似文献

Specialized networks of movement detectors in the antero-inferior field of the eyes of the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, and the housefly, Musca domestica, respond to upward (or downward) drift of the retinal images by excitation (or inhibition) of the lift-generating force of flight. The influence of the direction of pattern movement upon the altitude control response has been investigated under conditions of fixed flight in still air. Matched model analysis of the available response curves suggests the predominance of unidirectional movement detectors in these networks. Homologous wingbeat-inhibiting detectors in the specified fields of the eyes of the two species respond preferentially to pattern movement from antero-superior to postero-inferior. The arrangement of wingbeat-exciting detectors seems to follow different schemes: These detectors respond preferentially to movement from inferior to superior in Drosophila, and to movement from antero-inferior to postero-superior in Musca. The wingbeat-exciting network in Musca is restricted to a comparatively small antero-equatorial area of the specified fields of the eyes. The combination of the two types of detectors in this area establishes a powerful lift control system which is particularly sensitive to minute deviations from a given level of flight.  相似文献

Summary For studies on cell membranes, mice were exposed to mixed neutron + gamma reactor-radiation in the range of total doses from 0.5 to 4.5 Gy. Changes in functional activity of plasma membranes of erythrocytes, platelets, and lymphocytes were followed by a lectin-binding technique at various intervals afterwards. The amount of3H-concanavalin A bound to cells altered considerably during the 1st h after irradiation in all cell types. Lymphocytes and platelets, however, were more sensitive than erythrocytes as increased lectin-binding could already be observed after 0.5 Gy. The binding ability of these cells performed oscillatory behaviour. In addition, alterations in shapes and ultrastructure of cell surfaces and intracellular membranes were observed.  相似文献
