Fire plays a key role in ecosystem dynamics worldwide, altering energy flows and species community structure and composition. However, the functional mechanisms underlying these effects are not well understood. Many ground‐dwelling animal species can shelter themselves from exposure to heat and therefore rarely suffer direct mortality. However, fire‐induced alterations to the environment may change a species' relative trophic level within a food web and its mode of foraging. We assessed how fire could affect ant resource utilization at different scales in a Mediterranean forest. First, we conducted isotopic analyses on entire ant species assemblages and their potential food resources, which included plants and other arthropods, in burned and unburned plots 1 year postfire. Second, we measured the production of males and females by nests of a fire‐resilient species, Aphaenogaster gibbosa, and analyzed the differences in isotopic values among workers, males, and females to test whether fire constrained resource allocation. We found that, in spite of major modifications in biotic and abiotic conditions, fire had little impact on the relative trophic position of ant species. The studied assemblage was composed of species with a wide array of diets. They ranged from being mostly herbivorous to completely omnivorous, and a given species' trophic level was the same in burned and unburned plots. In A. gibbosa nests, sexuals had greater δ15N values than workers in both burned and unburned plots, which suggests that the former had a more protein‐rich diet than the latter. Fire also appeared to have a major effect on A. gibbosa sex allocation: The proportion of nests that produced male brood was greater on burned zones, as was the mean number of males produced per nest with the same reproductive investment . Our results show that generalist ants with relatively broad diets maintained a constant trophic position, even following a major disturbance like fire. However, the dramatically reduced production of females on burned zones compared to unburned zones 1 year postfire may result in considerably reduced recruitment of new colonies in the mid to long term, which could yield genetic bottlenecks and founder effects. Our study paves the way for future functional analyses of fire‐induced modifications in ant populations and communities.  相似文献

Objective

To identify which physician and patient characteristics are associated with physicians'' estimation of their patient social status.

Design

Cross-sectional multicentric survey.

Setting

Fourty-seven primary care private offices in Western Switzerland.

Participants

Random sample of 2030 patients ≥16, who encountered a general practitioner (GP) between September 2010 and February 2011.

Main measures

Primary outcome: patient social status perceived by GPs, using the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status, ranging from the bottom (0) to the top (10) of the social scale.Secondary outcome: Difference between GP''s evaluation and patient''s own evaluation of their social status. Potential patient correlates: material and social deprivation using the DiPCare-Q, health status using the EQ-5D, sources of income, and level of education. GP characteristics: opinion regarding patients'' deprivation and its influence on health and care.

Results

To evaluate patient social status, GPs considered the material, social, and health aspects of deprivation, along with education level, and amount and type of income. GPs declaring a frequent reflexive consideration of their own prejudice towards deprived patients, gave a higher estimation of patients'' social status (+1.0, p = 0.002). Choosing a less costly treatment for deprived patients was associated with a lower estimation (−0.7, p = 0.002). GP''s evaluation of patient social status was 0.5 point higher than the patient''s own estimate (p<0.0001).

Conclusions

GPs can perceive the various dimensions of patient social status, although heterogeneously, according partly to their own characteristics. Compared to patients'' own evaluation, GPs overestimate patient social status.  相似文献

Bergmann's rule originally described a positive relationship between body size and latitude in warm‐blooded animals. Larger animals, with a smaller surface/volume ratio, are better enabled to conserve heat in cooler climates (thermoregulatory hypothesis). Studies on endothermic vertebrates have provided support for Bergmann's rule, whereas studies on ectotherms have yielded conflicting results. If the thermoregulatory hypothesis is correct, negative relationships between body size and temperature should occur in temporal in addition to geographical gradients. To explore this possibility, we analysed seasonal activity patterns in a bee fauna comprising 245 species. In agreement with our hypothesis of a different relationship for large (endothermic) and small (ectothermic) species, we found that species larger than 27.81 mg (dry weight) followed Bergmann's rule, whereas species below this threshold did not. Our results represent a temporal extension of Bergmann's rule and indicate that body size and thermal physiology play an important role in structuring community phenology.  相似文献

Transmembrane lipid transporters are believed to establish and maintain phospholipid asymmetry in biological membranes; however, little is known about the in vivo function of the specific transporters involved. Here, we report that developing erythrocytes from mice lacking the putative phosphatidylserine flippase ATP11C showed a lower rate of PS translocation in vitro compared with erythrocytes from wild-type littermates. Furthermore, the mutant mice had an elevated percentage of phosphatidylserine-exposing mature erythrocytes in the periphery. Although erythrocyte development in ATP11C-deficient mice was normal, the mature erythrocytes had an abnormal shape (stomatocytosis), and the life span of mature erythrocytes was shortened relative to that in control littermates, resulting in anemia in the mutant mice. Thus, our findings uncover an essential role for ATP11C in erythrocyte morphology and survival and provide a new candidate for the rare inherited blood disorder stomatocytosis with uncompensated anemia.  相似文献

The bacterial phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) sugar phosphotransferase system mediates sugar uptake and controls the carbon metabolism in response to carbohydrate availability. Enzyme I (EI), the first component of the phosphotransferase system, consists of an N-terminal protein binding domain (EIN) and a C-terminal PEP binding domain (EIC). EI transfers phosphate from PEP by double displacement via a histidine residue on EIN to the general phosphoryl carrier protein HPr. Here we report the 2.4 Å crystal structure of the homodimeric EI from Staphylococcus aureus. EIN consists of the helical hairpin HPr binding subdomain and the phosphorylatable βα phospho-histidine (P-His) domain. EIC folds into an (βα)8 barrel. The dimer interface of EIC buries 1833 Å2 of accessible surface per monomer and contains two Ca2+ binding sites per dimer. The structures of the S. aureus and Escherichia coli EI domains (Teplyakov, A., Lim, K., Zhu, P. P., Kapadia, G., Chen, C. C., Schwartz, J., Howard, A., Reddy, P. T., Peterkofsky, A., and Herzberg, O. (2006) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 103, 16218–16223) are very similar. The orientation of the domains relative to each other, however, is different. In the present structure the P-His domain is docked to the HPr binding domain in an orientation appropriate for in-line transfer of the phosphate to the active site histidine of the acceptor HPr. In the E. coli structure the phospho-His of the P-His domain projects into the PEP binding site of EIC. In the S. aureus structure the crystallographic temperature factors are lower for the HPr binding domain in contact with the P-His domain and higher for EIC. Functional research of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) most often relies on utilization of RPE-derived cell lines in vitro. However, no studies about similarities and differences of the respective cell lines exist so far. Thus, we here analyze the proteome of the most popular RPE cell lines: ARPE-19 and hTERT and compare their constitutive and de novo synthesized protein expression profiles to human early passage retinal pigment epithelial cells (epRPE) by 2-D electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF peptide mass fingerprinting. In all three cell lines the baseline protein expression pattern corresponded well to the de novo synthesized cellular proteome. However, comparison of the protein profile of epRPE cells with that of hTERT-RPE cells revealed a higher abundance of proteins related to cell migration, adhesion, and extracellular matrix formation, paralleled by a down-regulation of proteins attributed to cell polarization, and showed an altered expression of detoxification enzymes in hTERT-RPE. ARPE-19 cells, however, exhibited a higher abundance of components of the microtubule cytoskeleton and differences in expression of proteins related to proliferation and cell death. epRPE cells, hTERT-RPE, and ARPE-19 therefore may respond differently with respect to certain functional properties, a finding that should prove valuable for future in vitro studies.  相似文献

Recently, we disclosed a series of potent pyrimidine benzamide-based thrombopoietin receptor agonists. Unfortunately, the structural features required for the desired activity conferred physicochemical properties that were not favorable for the development of an oral agent. The physical properties of the series were improved by replacing the aminopyrimidinyl group with a piperidine-4-carboxylic acid moiety. The resulting compounds possessed favorable in vivo pharmacokinetic properties, including good bioavailability.  相似文献

Surgical castration of male piglets without anaesthesia is routine in domestic pig production causing serious distress and impairment of welfare. Thus, the EU is seeking alternatives, with local anaesthesia being one of the possible candidates. The aim of the present study was to compare surgical castration without anaesthesia (castration by cutting the spermatic cords [C]) with castration under local anaesthesia (CL), the act of intratesticular anaesthesia (L), and the combined effect of local anaesthesia and the following castration (L + CL) under practical field conditions on a commercial farm. Distress was estimated according to a set of behavioural indicators derived from vocalisation and defence movements of the piglets. C had the overall worst effects on the indices, made up assumingly by the pain due to the intensity and duration of the procedure, although it was not possible to separate the effects of handling and the procedure of castration. Local anaesthesia reduces the intensity of pain experienced during castration as assessed by changes in the behavioural indicators used here. But this positive effect was partly obscured by additional distress due to prolonged handling. It is concluded that the welfare benefits of local anaesthesia for castration of piglets, as carried out and assessed here, may not fully meet expectations, and that further research is needed to find ways to reduce the suffering of male piglets, that it is necessary to castrate.  相似文献
