Numerous studies have used the classic van der Pol oscillator, which contains a cubic nonlinearity, to model the effect of light on the human circadian pacemaker. Jewett and Kronauer demonstrated that Aschoff's rule could be incorporated into van der Pol type models and used a van der Pol type oscillator with higher order nonlinearities. Kronauer, Forger, and Jewett have proposed a model for light preprocessing, Process L, representing a biochemical process that converts a light signal into an effective drive on the circadian pacemaker. In the paper presented here, the authors use the classic van der Pol oscillator with Process L and Jewett and Kronauer's model of Aschoff's rule to model the human circadian pacemaker. This simpler cubic model predicts the results of a three-pulse human phase response curve experiment and a two-pulse amplitude reduction study with as much, or more, accuracy as the models of Jewett and Kronauer and Kronauer, Forger, and Jewett, which both employ a nonlinearity of degree 7. Climate change will redistribute the global biodiversity in the Anthropocene. As climates change, species might move from one place to another, due to local extinctions and colonization of new environments. However, the existence of permeable migratory routes precedes faunal migrations in fragmented landscapes. Here, we investigate how dispersal will affect the outcome of climate change on the distribution of Amazon's primate species. We modeled the distribution of 80 Amazon primate species, using ecological niche models, and projected their potential distribution on scenarios of climate change. Then, we imposed landscape restrictions to primate dispersal, derived from a natural biogeographical barrier to primates (the main tributaries of the Amazon river) and an anthropogenic constraint to the migration of many canopy‐dependent animals (deforested areas). We also highlighted potential conflict zones, i.e. regions of high migration potential but predicted to be deforested. Species response to climate change varied across dispersal limitation scenarios. If species could occupy all newly suitable climate, almost 70% of species could expand ranges. Including dispersal barriers (natural and anthropogenic), however, led to range expansion in only less than 20% of the studied species. When species were not allowed to migrate, all of them lost an average of 90% of the suitable area, suggesting that climate may become unsuitable within their present distributions. All Amazon primate species may need to move as climate changes to avoid deleterious effects of exposure to non‐analog climates. The effect of climate change on the distribution of Amazon primates will ultimately depend on whether landscape permeability will allow climate‐driven faunal migrations. The network of protected areas in the Amazon could work as ‘stepping stones’ but most are outside important migratory routes. Therefore, protecting important dispersal corridors is foremost to allow effective migrations of the Amazon fauna in face of climate change and deforestation. 相似文献

The availability of primary cells present in pathological conditions is often very limited due to stringent ethical regulation and patient consent. One such condition is chronic wounds, where dermal fibroblasts show a deficient migration. In vitro models with cellular tools that mimic the in vivo scenario would be advantageous to test new therapies for these challenging wounds. Since the availability of primary dermal fibroblasts present in chronic wounds is restricted and their “shelf-life” limited due to the increased senescence, our aim was to engineer human dermal fibroblasts with impaired migration using synthetic Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptides. We studied fibroblast behaviour on three different two dimensional (2D) surfaces, representative of the dermal extracellular matrix and the materials used in the development of dermal scaffolds, in addition to commercially available, collagen-based 3D dermal scaffolds, demonstrating that the concentration of synthetic RGD peptides necessary to impair migration of dermal fibroblasts should be tailored to the particular surface/material and cell population used. The described technology could be translated to other cell types including established cell lines. Background and aims
The potential use of a metal-tolerant sunflower mutant line for both biomonitoring and phytoremediating a Cu-contaminated soil series was investigated.Methods
The soil series (21–1,170 mg Cu kg?1) was sampled in field plots at control and wood preservation sites. Sunflowers were cultivated 1 month in potted soils under controlled conditions.Results
pH and dissolved organic matter influenced Cu concentration in the soil pore water. Leaf chlorophyll content and root growth decreased as Cu exposure rose. Their EC10 values corresponded to 104 and 118 μg Cu L?1 in the soil pore water, 138 and 155 mg Cu kg?1 for total soil Cu, and 16–18 mg Cu kg?1 DW shoot. Biomass of plant organs as well as leaf area, length and asymmetry were well correlated with Cu exposure, contrary to the maximum stem height and leaf water content.Conclusions
Physiological parameters were more sensitive to soil Cu exposure than the morphological ones. Bioconcentration and translocation factors and distribution of mineral masses for Cu highlighted this mutant as a secondary Cu accumulator. Free Cu2+ concentration in soil pore water best predicted Cu phytoavailability. The usefulness of this sunflower mutant line for biomonitoring and Cu phytoextraction was discussed. 相似文献90.
