A new approach to insect control—using sodium trichloroacetate (NaTCA) to inhibit synthesis of the hydrophobic cuticular lipids that protect insects from dehydration—was tested on Triatoma infestans. In vivo and in vitro studies of incorporation of radioactive precursors showed diminished cuticular hydrocarbon synthesis after NaTCA treatment. Thin layer chromatography and scanning electron microscopy showed disruption of the cuticular lipid layer of NaTCA-treated insects, which also have increased mortality and altered molting cycles. NaTCA treatment enhanced the penetration and increased the lethality of a contact insecticide. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

It is possible to rationalize the different steps involved in the photoconductivity observed intrans-polyacetylene (t-PA) in terms of a simple chemical model. The interchain electron transfer (IET) and the intrachain polaron capture by neutral solitons proposed by Orensteinat al. may be represented within a simple molecular orbital (MO) picture. An efficiency index for the IET is proposed in terms of the binding energy of the charged polarons and of the electronic chemical potential. The predictive power of the efficiency index is analyzed in the context of the global softness concept. An MO protocol is described to obtain estimates of the IET hopping probabilities.  相似文献

Yeast were isolated from the intestine of farmed rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), turbot (Scophtalmus maximus), and free-living flat-fish (Pleuronectes platessa and P. flesus). The average number of viable yeasts recovered from farmed rainbow trout was 3.0 × 103 and 0.5 × 102 cells per gram homogenized intestine for white and red-pigmented yeasts, respectively. The dominant species were Debaryomyces hansenii, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Rhodotorula rubra, and R. glutinis. In 5 of 10 free-lving marine fish, > 100 viable yeast cells per gram intestinal mucus were recovered. Red-pigmented yeasts dominated and composed >90% of the isolates. Colonization experiments were performed by inoculating rainbow trout and turbot with fish-specific, isolated yeast strains and by examining the microbial intestinal colonization at intervals. Inoculation of experimental fish with pure cultures of R. glutinis and D. hansenii HF1 yielded colonization at a level several orders of magnitude higher than before the inoculation. Up to 3.8 × 104, 3.1 × 106, and 2.3 × 109 viable yeast cells per gram intestine or feces were recovered in three separate colonization experiments. The high level of colonizing yeasts persisted for several weeks. The concentrations of yeasts in the tank water never exceeded 103 viable cells per milliliter. No traces of fish sickness as a result of high yeast colonization were recorded during any of the colonization experiments. For periods of the experiments, the concentration of aerobic bacteria in the fish intestine was lower than the intestinal yeast concentration. Scanning electron microscopy studies demonstrated a close association of the yeasts with the intestinal mucosa. The mucosal colonization was further demonstrated by separating intestinal content, mucus, and tissue. All compartments were colonized by >103 viable yeast cells per gram. No bacteria were detected on the micrographs, indicating that their affinity for the intestinal mucosa was less than that of the yeasts. Correspondence to: Thomas Andtid  相似文献

Summary A versatile, cheap and automated system is designed for the measurement of small gas flows produced in laboratory-scale fermentation processes. An automatic sampling device for programmed times is linked to the flow meter. The displacement of a liquid by the gas being measured is the principle on which both the meter and the sampling device are based. The isoelectric points of rat brain synaptosomes, mitochondria and mitoplasts have been determined by using different charged two-phase systems containing dextran and poly(ethylene glycol). The cross-partition diagrams of these organelles show isoelectric points at pH 4.1, 4.5 and 4.7, respectively. The influence of the conformational state of mitochondrial membranes upon their partition in two-phase systems has been studied. Shrunk mitoplasts showed a large change in their partition behavior as reflected by an increased affinity for the lower dextran phase, while shrinkage of mitochondria did not affect their partition. Shrunk mitoplasts showed the same isoelectric point of pH 4.7 as swollen mitoplasts, which indicates that no charge changes occurred on the outer side of the inner mitochondrial membrane during shrinkage of mitoplasts.  相似文献

Four unusual Apiotrichum, isolated from decayed wood of Eucryphia cordifolia Cav., Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Blume, and Laurelia sempervirens Wein., one of which was also isolated from the intestinal tract of Scaptomyza multispinosa Malloch (Diptera), are described and illustrated. These species differ from all the accepted Apiotrichum species (1–3) to warrant their establishment as four new species: Apiotrichum eucryphiae, Apiotrichum osvaldii, Apiotrichum futronensis and Apiotrichum nothofagi.  相似文献

Cytochalasin-B, a drug known to interfere with axoplasmic transport, evoked fibrillary potentials in the geniohyoid muscle when applied to its motor nerve. Despite this denervation-like effect, neuromuscular transmission remained normal. Some contractile characteristics of the muscle were studied. It was found that contraction time, isometric twitch tension, and half-relaxation time were not altered by the drug treatment. The present findings show that neurogenic molecular factors conveyed by axoplasmic transport to the nerve terminal are involved in the regulation of some muscle membrane characteristics but do not modify the muscle contractile features.  相似文献

Summary A male patient with an interstitial deletion 13q14q31 is described. Our necropsy findings included a left retinoblastoma and several gross internal malformations. In this paper we reaffirm that band 13q14 is involved in cases of retinoblastoma and we propose, after studying accompanying cases of total or partial long arm trisomies 13, that the loss of specific 13q bands, from 13q14 to 13q31 is responsible for the congenital defects we are describing.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the best fixative solution and the most suitable temperature for fixing sperm cells from goat ejaculates. In Experiment 1, a 6x3 factorial design was used to test 4 glutaraldehyde concentrations (0.5, 1, 2 and 4%) plus 1 treatment that did not contain a fixative (0%) but to which 0.3% sodium fluoride (NaF) had been added to immobilize the spermatozoa; the control treatment contained no fixative or NaF. The 6 treatments were tested with 3 different solvents: PBS, Na citrate and BL-1, representing a total of 18 samples per replicate. The fixed samples always provided a significantly higher (P<0.01) percentage of normal acrosomes than the unfixed samples, whether immobilized with NaF or observed inmediately after dilution. In Experiment 2, a 3x3 factorial design was used to determine the effect of the temperature of the glutaraldehyde fixative solution on the number of morphologically normal acrosomes from goat semen samples kept at 3 different temperatures. Our findings indicated that at all 3 fixative solution temperatures (5, 20 and 37 degrees C) there was a significant difference (P<0.01) in the percentage of normal acrosomes. At 5 degrees C, glutarhaldehyde yielded a general mean number of 53.6 normal acrosomes vs 75.1 at 20 degrees C and 83.05 at 37 degrees C. Based on these results, we recommend that the temperature of a fixative solution be established when designing an experiment using goat semen, since the temperature has a significant effect on the number of the normal acrosomes found in a semen sample.  相似文献
