The genus Myrtus L. (Myrtaceae family) comprises two species, Myrtus communis L. (known as common myrtle) growing wild all around the Mediterranean basin and Myrtus nivellei Batt . and Trab . (known as Saharan myrtle), found in central Sahara. Only one country, Algeria, hosts both species, M. communis in the North and M. nivellei in the South. The aim of this review was to collect, summarize, and compare the main results reported relative to the essential oils isolated from aerial parts of both species: botanical aspects, habitat, traditional use, chemical composition, new compounds, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant activity, anti‐inflammatory effect, and insecticidal activity. We have previously found that chronic infusion of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) decreased mean arterial pressure (MAP) by 16% in two-kidney, one-clip (2K-1C) hypertensive rats, and we hypothesized that natriuresis might be modified through the pressure-natriuresis mechanism. We therefore decided to evaluate sodium balance in 2K-1C rats infused with ANP (0.5 micrograms/h for 4 days). The ANP infusion to the 2K-1C rats induced a significant decrease in MAP from 171 +/- 3 to a minimum value of 147 +/- 6 mm Hg after 2 days of treatment (p less than 0.001). Sodium excretion fell from 2,536 +/- 60 to 2,047 +/- 86 (p less than 0.001) and 2,211 +/- 96 mu Eq/24 h (p less than 0.05) by days 1 and 2 of ANP administration. Furthermore, fractional excretion of sodium intake decreased from 99.1 +/- 1.5 to 81.1 +/- 2.9 (p less than 0.001), 84.1 +/- 2.6 (p less than 0.05) and 85.9 +/- 5.15% (p less than 0.05) by days 1, 2 and 3 of ANP infusion, respectively, returning to basal values thereafter. The administration of vehicle (0.9% NaCl) did not induce any significant change in 2K-1C hypertensive rats. The infusion of either vehicle or the same dose of ANP to normotensive rats (0.5 micrograms/h, for 4 days) did not modify sodium balance throughout the experiment. These results strongly suggest that the ANP-induced decrease in MAP might be responsible for the transitory sodium retention observed in 2K-1C hypertensive rats during the administration of the peptide. 相似文献

The separation of cells with different ages from erythrocyte populations of adult rats and young or adult chickens have been achieved by counter-current distribution (CCD). A thin-layer CCD apparatus has been employed. Erythrocytes from blood samples taken at different times after 59Fe i.p. injection were separated by CCD. By compilation in a "composite curve" of the hemoglobin and radioactivity CCD profiles obtained for each erythrocyte population, the distribution of cells according to age can be inferred. Young erythrocytes of rats are located at the right part of the CCD curves, while older cells are distributed towards the left. An opposite distribution has been found for erythrocytes from adult or young chickens. As a first attempt for the application of the CCD procedure to the assay of enzyme activities, it was found a decrease in phytase activity as the age of chicken erythrocytes increases and an increase in phosphoglycerate kinase and phosphofructokinase as the age of rat erythrocytes increases. 相似文献

Body weight, growth rate, chronological age and puberty in female and male rats from litters of 8 and 12 offsprings/mother have been studied. Age and body weight at the moment of vaginal opening (VO) and balanopreputial separation (BPS) were analyzed. Results show that animals reared in smaller groups grew faster than others. After weaning there was an increase in growth rate. VO and BPS occurred at the same age in groups with different growth rates and different body weights. In conclusion this work evidences that external signs of sexual maturation are not linked to a "critical weight" or to a "growth rate". 相似文献

Despite the attention squamate lizards have received in the study of digit and limb loss, little is known about limb morphogenesis in pentadactyl lizards. Recent developmental studies have provided a basis for understanding lizard autopodial element homology based on developmental and comparative anatomy. In addition, the composition and identity of some carpal and tarsal elements of lizard limbs, and reptiles in general, have been the theme of discussions about their homology compared to non‐squamate Lepidosauromorpha and basal Amniota. The study of additional embryonic material from different lizard families may improve our understanding of squamate limb evolution. Here, we analyze limb morphogenesis in the gekkonid lizard Gonatodes albogularis describing patterns of chondrogenesis and ossification from early stages of embryonic development to hatchlings. Our results are in general agreement with previous developmental studies, but we also show that limb development in squamates probably involves more chondrogenic elements for carpal and tarsal morphogenesis, as previously recognized on the grounds of comparative anatomy. We provide evidence for the transitory presence of distal carpale 1 and intermedium in the carpus and tibiale, intermedium, distal centralia, and distal tarsale 2 in the tarsus. Hence, we demonstrate that some elements that were believed to be lost in squamate evolution are conserved as transitory elements during limb development. Genetic susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS) has been linked to the HLA-DR15 haplotype consisting of DRB1*15:01(DR2b) and DRB5*01:01(DR2a) alleles. Given almost complete linkage disequilibrium of the two alleles, recent studies suggested differential roles in susceptibility (DR2b) or protection from MS (DR2a). Our objective was to assess the potential contribution of DR2a to disease etiology in MS using a humanized model of autoimmunity. To assess the potential contribution of DR2a to disease etiology, we created DR2a humanized transgenic (Tg) mice and subsequently crossed them to Tg mice expressing TL3A6, an MS patient-derived myelin basic protein 83-99-specific TCR. In TL3A6/DR2a Tg mice, CD4 Tg T cells escape thymic and peripheral deletion and initiate spontaneous experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) at low rates, depending on the level of DR2a expression. The ability to induce active EAE was also increased in animals expressing higher levels of DR2a. Inflammatory infiltrates and neuronal damage were present throughout the spinal cord, consistent with a classical ascending EAE phenotype with minor involvement of the cerebellum, brainstem, and peripheral nerve roots in spontaneous, as well as actively induced, disease. These studies emphasize the pathologic contribution of the DR2a allele to the development of autoimmunity when expressed as the sole MHC class II molecule, as well as strongly argue for DR2a as a contributor to the CNS autoimmunity in MS. 相似文献

Information on the infective stage of Ascaris lumbricoides and the pathology caused by the parasite is widely available in the literature. However, information about early embryonic development of A. lumbricoides and its life cycle outside the host is limited. The purpose of this study was to describe the morphological changes within the developing embryo during incubation in vitro at 28 C, as well as to explore differences in egg viability during incubation. Ascaris suum eggs (4,000 eggs/ml), used as a model for A. lumbricoides , were placed for incubation in 0.1N H(2)SO(4) at 28 C in the dark for 21 days. Every day, sub-samples of approximately 100 A. suum eggs were taken from the incubation solution for microscopic evaluation. Development, morphological changes, and viability of the first 40 eggs were observed and documented with photos. During this study, 12 stages were identified in the developing embryo by standard microscopy, 2 of which had not been previously reported. By the end of the first wk, most developing embryos observed were in the late-morula stage (72.5%). On day 14 of incubation, 90% had developed to larva-1 stage, and by day 21, 100% had developed to larva-2 stage. No significant differences were found in the viability recorded in a continuum from day 5 to day 21 of incubation (chi-square, P > 0.05). The result of this study complements and expands the stages of development of Ascaris spp. outside the host previously reported in the literature. It also suggests the potential use of early stages of development of the nematode to determine viability and safety of sewage sludge, wastewater, or compost after treatment recommended by USEPA. 相似文献

This article documents the initial development of a Spanish mental health quality of life (QOL) instrument based on the adolescents' own assessment of important domains to their QOL. Using a grounded theory approach, we targeted five mental health disorders: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder. In-depth interviews (n = 40) and three focus groups (n = 20) were conducted and analyzed using qualitative methods to guide the development of items. A convenient sample of island Puerto Rican adolescents aged 12-18 was recruited from outpatient mental health clinics. Qualitative analysis revealed a total of 87 themes. They were distributed based on core QOL domains such as (1) Self, (2) Peers, (3) Family, (4) School, and (5) Environment. Items were written based on prevailing themes and using as closely as possible, words and phrases used by the adolescents to describe their views and perceptions of QOL. The goal for the AQOL-MHS is to pinpoint specific areas of health-related QOL for each psychiatric diagnostic group that will provide valuable information to assist both patients and providers set, define and evaluate adequate mental health treatment goals. 相似文献
