Large-scale land conversion for agriculture in Brazilian Amazonia is occurring at persistently high rates. Basin-wide net land use and land cover changes imply substantially different situations between distinct regions and states due to different agricultural policies. This research used eight landscape metrics to quantify and investigate the spatial patterns of cattle pasture and cropland throughout the states of Pará, Mato Grosso, Rondônia, and Amazonas. These metrics were patch density (DEN), mean patch size (MPS), largest patch index (LPI), mean edge density (MED), mean twist number (TWI), corrected perimeter-to-area ratio (CPA), fractal dimension (FDI), and fragmentation index (FRG). A total of 1852 patches were analyzed, originating from 86 samples in 71 different plots, covering a total of 177,500 km2 throughout all four states.Principal component analysis showed a partial overlap in the spatial pattern of agricultural patches between all states. The largest percentage of variance was explained by patch area metrics, which can be related to the different approaches in agricultural policies, but no clear division between the states was identified in this dimension. The metrics quantifying patch shape were de facto independent of deforestation area, and related to the second principal component axis. Although some overlap in this dimension was present as well, these metrics proved a possible measure for discerning the patterns of agriculture attached to a certain state. Different land use policies are hypothesized to lead to more heterogeneity in landscape patterns in an early stage, yet the increasing influence of both cropland and pasture agriculture eventually leads to more uniform landscapes in which spatial differences gradually disappear. 相似文献

Landscape ecology deals with ecological processes in their spatial context. It shares with ecosystem ecology the primate of emergent ecological disciplines. The aim of this contribution is to approach the definition of landscapes using cognitive paradigms. Neutral-based landscape (NbL), individual-based landscape (IbL) and observed-based landscape (ObL) are defined to explore the cognitive mechanisms. NbL represents the undecoded component of the cognitive matrix. The IbL is the portion of landscape perceived by the biological sensors. ObL is the part of the cognitive matrix perceived using the cultural background of the observer. The perceived landscape (PL) is composed by the sum of these three approaches of landscape perception. Two further types of information (sensu Stonier) are recognized in this process of perception: the compressed information, as it is present inside the cognitive matrix, and the decompressed information that will structure the PL when a semiotic relationship operates between the organisms and the cognitive matrix. Scaling properties of these three PL components are recognized in space and time. In NbL scale seems irrelevant, in IbL the perception is filtered by organismic scaling and in ObL the spatio-temporal scale seems of major importance. Definitively, perception is scale-dependent. A combination of the cognitive approach with information paradigms to study landscapes opens new perspectives in the interpretation of ecological complexity. 相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Marcgraviaceae are a rather small family of seven genera and approx. 130 neotropical species. This study aims to present a detailed palynological survey of the family in order to comment on the intrafamily relationships and possible correlations with pollinators. METHODS: In total, 119 specimens representing 67 species and all genera are observed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, eight species from five genera are studied with transmission electron microscopy. KEY RESULTS: Our results show that pollen grains of Marcgraviaceae are small (20-35 microm), have three equatorial apertures, granules on the colpus membrane, oblate spheroidal to prolate spheroidal shapes, mainly psilate to perforate ornamentations, and lalongate colpus-shaped thinnings at the inner layer of the exine, and show the presence of orbicules. Based on our fragmentary knowledge of the pollination biology of the family, there are no clear correlations between pollinators and pollen features. CONCLUSIONS: The genus Marcgravia has a high percentage of reticulate sexine patterns and a relatively thin nexine. Sarcopera can be defined by the presence of an oblate spheroidal to even suboblate shape, while Ruyschia and Souroubea typically show prolate spheroidal to subprolate pollen grains. The presence of a thick foot layer in the pollen wall is characteristic of the genera Norantea, Sarcopera and Schwartzia. Pollen features that are taxonomically useful within the family are the shape, sexine sculpturing, and ultrastructure of the pollen wall. 相似文献

An autotrophic culture system was developed for the in vitro mycorrhization of potato plantlets. Roots of micropropagated plantlets were associated to an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus under in vitro conditions, while shoots developed under open air conditions. Several thousand spores, an extensive extraradical mycelium and an abundant root colonization were obtained. Spores were able to colonize new plantlets under the same conditions. These results support the capacity of the autotrophic culture system to continuously culture arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and may serve as a powerful tool to investigate various aspects of the symbiosis for which a source-sink relationship and photosynthetic active tissues are necessary. 相似文献

The recognition of peptidoglycan by cells of the innate immune system has been controversial; both TLR2 and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-2 (NOD2) have been implicated in this process. In the present study we demonstrate that although NOD2 is required for recognition of peptidoglycan, this leads to strong synergistic effects on TLR2-mediated production of both pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Defective IL-10 production in patients with Crohn's disease bearing loss of function mutations of NOD2 may lead to overwhelming inflammation due to a subsequent Th1 bias. In addition to the potentiation of TLR2 effects, NOD2 is a modulator of signals transmitted through TLR4 and TLR3, but not through TLR5, TLR9, or TLR7. Thus, interaction between NOD2 and specific TLR pathways may represent an important modulatory mechanism of innate immune responses. 相似文献

The prevalence of male homosexuality probably varies over time and across societies. One reason for this variation may be the joint effect of two factors: (1) variations in fertility rate or family size; and (2) the fraternal birth order effect, the finding that the odds of male homosexuality increases with each additional older brother. Because of these effects, the rate of male homosexuality may be relatively high (at least in terms of sexual attraction if not behavior) in societies that have a high fertility rate, but this rate has probably declined somewhat in some, particularly western, societies. The differential environmental sensitivity of the sexes hasstrong implications in the evolutionary history of species asit can alter sexual size dimorphism, population sex ratios,and the faculty of parents to manipulate offspring sex in relationto environmental conditions. We studied sexual differences inhatching patterns and evaluated sex- and size-related mortalityin relation to hatching order and brood sex ratios in the chinstrappenguin Pygoscelis antarctica, a moderately size-dimorphic species,with a modal clutch size of 2 eggs. We found that male, second-hatched,and large eggs showed shorter hatching periods than female,first-hatched, and small eggs. We also found a male-biased mortalityof nestlings in the colony. However, male mortality patternsdiffered depending on the brood sex ratio composition. Mortalityof male chicks in all-male broods was higher than in mixed broodsand higher than female mortality in all-female broods. Contrary,females from mixed brood showed higher mortality than theirmale nest mates and higher too than females in all-female broods.Second-hatched chicks also suffered from higher mortality thanfirst-hatched chicks. Our results indicate that both the superiorcompetitive capacity and the higher energy demand of the largersex constitute 2 causal factors explaining patterns of sex-biasedmortality. Both factors occur in the same species and in differentsituations of sibling competition shaped by brood sex ratiocomposition. This study constitutes a good example of how patternsof sex-related mortality can vary depending on nest environmentalcircumstances. Drug discovery and drug target identification are two intimately linked facets of intervention strategies aimed at effectively combating pathological conditions in humans. Simple model organisms provide attractive platforms for devising and streamlining efficient drug discovery and drug target identification methodologies. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans has emerged as a particularly convenient and versatile tool that can be exploited to achieve these goals. Although C. elegans is a relatively modern addition to the arsenal of model organisms, its biology has already been investigated to an exceptional level. This, coupled with effortless handling and a notable low cost of cultivation and maintenance, allows seamless implementation of high-throughput drug screening approaches as well as in-depth genetic and biochemical studies of the molecular pathways targeted by specific drugs. In this review, we introduce C. elegans as a model organism with significant advantages toward the identification of molecular drug targets. In addition, we discuss the value of the worm in the development of drug screening and drug evaluation protocols. The unique features of C. elegans, which greatly facilitate drug studies, hold promise for both deciphering disease pathogenesis and formulating educated and effective therapeutic interventions. 相似文献
