Summary The retina of the median eyes of the North African scorpion, Androctonus australis L., is supplied with numerous neurosecretory nerve fibres which establish synaptoid contacts on the retinula cells. The number of fibres or profiles of varicosities of fibre terminals associated with a retinular unit (five retinula cells with a fused rhabdom) varies between 10 and 20. Electron-opaque vesicles with a diameter of 80–100 nm are abundant within the axonal profiles. The synaptoid junctions are characterized by postsynaptic electron-dense material on the inner leaflet of the retinula cell membrane and, frequently, presynaptic submembranous dense material. Because of these ultrastructural features, the junctions observed here resemble typical interneuronal synaptic contacts. Hence this kind of neurosecretory junction appears to be unique among arthropods.It is suggested that the neurosecretory fibres within the retina represent the efferent pathways for the control of the circadian pigment movements within the retinula cells.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (F1 77/7)  相似文献

The effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) on the envelope of two strains of Escherichia coli (B and Cla) was studied with freeze-fracturing methods. Untreated cells showed the outer membrane's outer surface with a fine texture of randomly spaced depressions of about 4.5-nm diameter; small areas with symmetrical arrangements of structural surface elements were also observed. The outer membrane's fracture plane revealed a random distribution of particles on its "concave" plane, only occasionally interrupted by particle-free areas. The "convex" aspect of the outer membrane's fracture plane showed only a few scattered particles. The cleavage plane of the inner membrane was often interrupted by many localized elevated plateaus, at which the cleaving process had, for short distances, switched to the outer membrane. The effects of EDTA treatment were mainly seen in the structure of the freeze-etched outer membrane: (i) the pits as well as the symmetrical surface elements of the outer membrane's outer surface had disappeared; (ii) a number of plateaus (about 20 to 50/cell) were seen at which a cleavage plane within the inner membrane had switched to the hydrophobic portion of the outer membrane (outer membrane's fracture plane). These plateaus were also visible in untreated cells; however, EDTA treatment apparently caused an increased exposure of plateaus. Surface areas, exposed by freeze-etching, revealed the underlying plateaus as elevations in the surface contour of the cell, suggesting a slower etching rate in the zones of the plateaus relative to the rest of the outer membrane. Well-defined, particle-free patches in the outer membrane's fracture plane, concave, were more frequent and larger in size after EDTA treatment than in the controls. In the presence of glycerol, the cells often cleaved in the outer membrane's fracture plane, but isolated plateaus were rarely observed. After metabolic poisoning of cells for 15 to 25 min at 37 degrees C, the plateaus had widened. These data suggest that the material of the plateaus has a slow rate of lateral diffusion. Placement of EDTA-treated cells in fresh medium at 37 degrees C caused, after 3 to 5 min, the reoccurrence of the pitted surface structure. We propose that the plateaus represent localized zones, at which newly synthesized lipopolysaccharide has been inserted.  相似文献

The main question of our investigation is: Do there exist age-specific learning abilities in animals? 120 quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) of 12 different age groups (between one day and 20 weeks) were tested in a combination apparatus by using two training methods. 60 quails were trained with decreasing (1), 60 other quails with increasing learning assistance (2). In each case the learning period lasted 5 days after which the animals were tested in a two-way choice apparatus and in a simple maze. Retention was tested 3 weeks later. -The 2 methods led to different results. In general the younger animals learnt better than the older ones when trained by method 1. No differences in learning performance between the 12 age groups were obtained by method 2.  相似文献

Abstract Anaerobic production and consumption of NO was measured in a calcic cambisol (KBE; pH 7.3) and a forest luvisol (PBE; pH 4.4) which were incubated at 80% water-holding capacity and continuously flushed with N2. Both NO production and NO consumption were negligibly low when nitrate and nitrite concentrations in the soil were exhausted. Addition of glucose alone had no effect, but addition of nitrate ± glucose greatly stimulated both NO production and NO consumption. NO consumption followed an apparent first-order reaction at low NO mixing ratios (1–3 ppmv), but a higher NO mixing ratios it followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics. In PBE the apparent K m was 980 ppbv NO (1.92 nM in soil water). During reduction of nitrate, nitrite intermediately accumulated and simultaneously, production rates of NO and N2O were at the maximum. Production rates of NO plus N2O amounted to 20% and 34% of the nitrate reduction rate in KBE and PBE, respectively. NO production was hyperbolically related to the nitrite concentration, indicating an apparent Km of 1.6 μg nitrite-N g−1 d.w. soil (equivalent to 172 μM nitrite in soil solution) for the reduction of nitrite to NO in KBE. Under nitrate and nitrite-limiting conditions, 62–76% and 93–97% of the consumed NO-N were recovered as N2O-N in KBE and PBE, respectively. Gassing of nitrate plus nitrite-depretsu KBE with increasing mixing ratios of NO2 resulted in increasing rates of NO2 uptake and presumably in the formation of low concentrations of nitrite and nitrate. This NO2 uptake resulted in increasing rates of both NO production and NO consumption indicating that nitrite or nitrate was limiting for both reactions.  相似文献

A discomycete collected in western Sichuan, China, is morphologically intermediate between Cudonia and Spathularia. The fungus has a bright yellow capitate ascigerous head, a white, ridged stalk, and a well-developed membrane covering the whole ascoma. The asci, ascospores, and paraphyses are similar to those of Cudonia and Spathularia. Based on morphology and DNA sequence analysis, a new species, Cudonia sichuanensis, is reported. Cudonia and Spathularia are closely related to members of Rhytismataceae, as has been suggested previously. The similarity of ascoma and ascospore development between these two genera and Lophodermium (Rhytismataceae) is discussed.  相似文献

Same-sex sexual behaviour (SSB) has been documented in a wide range of animals, but its evolutionary causes are not well understood. Here, we investigated SSB in the light of Reeve''s acceptance threshold theory. When recognition is not error-proof, the acceptance threshold used by males to recognize potential mating partners should be flexibly adjusted to maximize the fitness pay-off between the costs of erroneously accepting males and the benefits of accepting females. By manipulating male burying beetles'' search time for females and their reproductive potential, we influenced their perceived costs of making an acceptance or rejection error. As predicted, when the costs of rejecting females increased, males exhibited more permissive discrimination decisions and showed high levels of SSB; when the costs of accepting males increased, males were more restrictive and showed low levels of SSB. Our results support the idea that in animal species, in which the recognition cues of females and males overlap to a certain degree, SSB is a consequence of an adaptive discrimination strategy to avoid the costs of making rejection errors.  相似文献

Vimentin expression throughout the cell cycle has been analyzed at the single-cell level in asynchronously growing MPC-11 cells using multiparameter flow cytometry. We have previously shown that these cells normally lack detectable amounts of intermediate filament proteins. In the presence of the phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), cell proliferation ceases and large quantities of the intermediate filament protein vimentin are synthesized and accumulate in most of the cells. In the present study, the short-term effect of TPA on distribution of cells within the cell cycle was a depletion in early S phase followed by a depletion in mid- and late S phase. In parallel, the G1-phase fraction increased significantly. In addition, a delay in progression through G2/M phase was observed. These data strongly suggest an inhibition of progression of cells through the cell cycle in G1 phase as the primary event on cell cycle kinetics elicited by TPA. Vimentin accumulation could be detected by flow cytometry as early as 2 h after TPA addition; at this time, the percentage of vimentin-positive cells was highest in G2/M phase. Prolonged TPA treatment induced vimentin accumulation in cells of all cell cycle phases. However, even at later times, the G1-phase population consisted of two subpopulations with low and high vimentin content, respectively. The fraction of cells which displayed a higher level of vimentin probably represents those G1-phase cells which previously had undergone cell division in the presence of TPA. Our data indicate that TPA-induced vimentin synthesis is regulated in a cell cycle-dependent manner and is maximally induced in cells which have passed a putative cell cycle restriction point in G1 phase.  相似文献
