Current patterns of floral design in Pedicularis must have undergone an evolutionary process of interacting among components of floral traits, and then formed internal relationships among these traits. To detect such correlations, which may provide insight to understand flower evolution, 40 Pedicularis species representing all corolla types of the genus were studied. Results show that, interspecifically, pollen size correlates negatively with pollen number, but positively with pistil length. This suggests that plants evolve an optimal pollen size, which balances the advantages of large pollen size for gametophytic competition against the fecundity disadvantages of fewer pollen grains. In contrast to sex allocation theory, this study does not find a trade-off, but an interspecific positive correlation between pollen and ovule number. This is consistent with the hypothesis that genetic variation for resource acquisition may in part be responsible for the lack of negative correlation between male and female function.This work was supported by the State Key Basic Research and Development Plan, China (Grant No. G2000046804) to YHG. A Melanesian variant of the genetic disease α-thalassemia has recently been shown to be due to a single-nucleotide polymorphism located between the adult α-globin genes and their enhancers. Uncharged poly(Nε-methyl-L -lysine) (PMLL) and its isomer, poly(Nδ-ethyl-L -ornithine) (PELO), in alkaline solution (pH ca. 12) undergo a helix-to-β transition upon mild heating at 50°C or higher in a manner similar to that of poly(L -lysine) (PLL). The rate of conversion follows the order: PMLL < PELO < PLL. The helix can be regenerated upon cooling near zero degrees, for instance, after more than 12 hr at 2°C. At concentrations less than 0.02% the β form is intramolecular, but at higher concentrations both intra- and intermolecular β forms are generated. Poly(Nδ-methyl-L -ornithine) (PMLO), an isomer of PLL, behaves like poly(L -ornithine); uncharged PMLO in alkaline solution is partially helical and becomes disordered at elevated temperatures.  相似文献

Unpublished portions of the synthesis of a phosphinate-phosphonate diether analog of CDPdiacylglycerol are reported. The liponucleotide analog was found to be a very powerful inhibitor of platelet PI synthetase; kinetic data suggest a competitive inhibition mechanism. The structural specificity of CDPdiacylglycerol for liponucleotide-mediated biosynthetic reactions is discussed.  相似文献

An iso-random Bi Bi mechanism has been proposed for adenylate kinase. In this mechanism, one of the enzyme forms can bind the substrates MgATP and AMP, whereas the other form can bind the products MgADP and ADP. In a catalytic cycle, the conformational changes of the free enzyme and the ternary complexes are the rate-limiting steps. The AP(5)A inhibition equations derived from this mechanism show theoretically that AP(5)A acts as a competitive inhibitor for the forward reaction and a mixed noncompetitive inhibitor for the backward reaction.  相似文献

Two analogs of human beta-endorphin (beta-EP) which contain cystine bridges, [Cys15-Cys26,Phe27,Gly31]-beta-EP (I) and [Cys16-Cys26,Phe27,Gly31]-beta-EP (II), were synthesized by the solid-phase method. Peptides I and II were shown to contain 2-2.5 times the opiate receptor binding activity of beta-endorphin. We also synthesized two analogs with reduced alkylated cysteine residues and these peptides, [Arg9,19,24,28,29 Cys(Cam)11,26,Phe27,Gly31] and [Arg9,19,24,28,29,Cys-(Cam)12,26,Phe27,Gly31], were shown to have approximately the same opiate receptor activity as beta-endorphin.  相似文献
