Human Discrimination of the Angular Velocity of the Vertical Movement of an Acoustic Image in Opposite Directions

The discrimination of the angular velocity of ventrodorsal and dorsoventral movement of an acoustic image was studied in nine test subjects. The experiments were performed using an apparent movement produced by consecutive activation of loudspeakers located along an arc in the vertical plane. The differential thresholds were measured by the minimum increment method. As the velocity of an acoustic image movement in opposite directions increased, the values of its mean absolute differential thresholds increased monotonically. Regression lines plotted by linear approximation of these values did not differ significantly.     

Isolation and characterization of polymorphic microsatellite markers in the blowflies Lucilia illustris and Lucilia sericata

Thirteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed for blowflies for use in studies of genetic differentiation in wild populations of Lucilia illustris, to detect the possible occurrence of bottlenecks and to study changes in genetic variation in laboratory populations of Lucilia sericata following artificial bottlenecks. In this preliminary study it was revealed that heterozygosity was lower than expected in wild populations and genetic variation had been lost in the laboratory population despite being kept at a large size.     

Using FTA® cards to store avian blood samples for genetic studies. Their application in sex determination

FTA® cards were used for long‐term storage of avian blood samples. Blood DNA was extracted by a simple method and used in PCR for sex identification of adult and nestling Great Grey Shrikes Lanius excubitor.     

The role of follitropin and lutropin on the ovarian function in rats

Adult cycling female rats were treated with antisera to highly purified human follitropin and lutropin for eight days. The effect of this treatment on thein vitro steroidogenic response of the ovarian cells isolated from these rats to follitropin and lutropin has been investigated. Neutralisation of follitropin did not have significant effect on steroid production in response to lutropin. However, neutralisation of lutropin resulted in a very significant inhibition of response to both follitropin and lutropin.     

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of PIP2 and PIP3 in Lipid Bilayers: Determination of Ring Orientation, and the Effects of Surface Roughness on a Poisson-Boltzmann Description

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of phosphatidylinositol (4,5)-bisphosphate (PIP₂) and phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP₃) in 1-palmitoyl 2-oleoyl phosphatidylcholine (POPC) bilayers indicate that the inositol rings are tilted ∼40° with respect to the bilayer surface, as compared with 17° for the P-N vector of POPC. Multiple minima were obtained for the ring twist (analogous to roll for an airplane). The phosphates at position 1 of PIP₂ and PIP₃ are within an Ångström of the plane formed by the phosphates of POPC; lipids in the surrounding shell are depressed by 0.5-0.8 Å, but otherwise the phosphoinositides do not substantially perturb the bilayer. Finite size artifacts for ion distributions are apparent for systems of ∼26 waters/lipid, but, based on simulations with a fourfold increase of the aqueous phase, the phosphoinositide positions and orientations do not show significant size effects. Electrostatic potentials evaluated from Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) calculations show a strong dependence of potential height and ring orientation, with the maxima on the −25 mV surfaces (17.1 ± 0.1 Å for PIP₂ and 19.4 ± 0.3 Å for PIP₃) occurring near the most populated orientations from MD. These surfaces are well above the background height of 10 Å estimated for negatively charged cell membranes, as would be expected for lipids involved in cellular signaling. PB calculations on microscopically flat bilayers yield similar maxima as the MD-based (microscopically rough) systems, but show less fine structure and do not clearly indicate the most probable regions. Electrostatic free energies of interaction with pentalysine are also similar for the rough and flat systems. These results support the utility of a rigid/flat bilayer model for PB-based studies of PIP₂ and PIP₃ as long as the orientations are judiciously chosen.     

Enzymatic System of Metabolism and Detoxication of Xenobiotics as a Basis of Metabolic Portraiting during Prognostication of Risk of Pathological Processes

We studied intraspecific features of the main enzymes of metabolism and detoxication of xenobiotics on mice (eight inbred lines) and rats (five lines) for estimation of possible variants of complete or incomplete metabolic equality. Significant genetically determined intraspecific differences for activities of the enzymes of metabolism and detoxication of xenobiotics were described. Generalized criteria for comparison of the metabolic status were proposed on the basis of activities of the main enzymes: cytochrome P-450 (hydroxylation and epoxidation), epoxyhydrolase, glutathione-S-transferase, UDP-glucuronosyl transferase, and sulfotransferase. The proposed criteria for estimation of the metabolic parameters of an individual can serve as a basis of metabolic portraiting.     

Rapid high-performance liquid chromatographic determination of serum gabapentin

Gabapentin (GBP) is a new antiepileptic drug approved for clinical treatment of partial seizures in the USA. Serum GBP concentrations in 283 patients were studied using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The standard curves were linear over a range of 60 ng to 15 μg/ml. The coefficient of variations were 3.4 to 8.8% and 1.4 to 9.8% for intra- and inter-assay studies, respectively. The lower limit of quantitation was 10 ng/ml. Of the 283 patients studied, 72.5% had GBP levels between 2 and 10 μg/ml, 14.8% were below 2 μg/ml and 12.7% above 10 μg/ml. The mean±S.E. of GBP in 283 patients was 5.38±0.23 μg/ml. Peak concentrations of more than 15 μg/ml and trough levels as low as 0.1 μg/ml were not uncommon. The method described was rapid, simple, highly sensitive and reproducible. Other antiepileptic drugs and endogenous compounds did not interfere with the assay.     

A new species of Galearis (Orchidinae: Orchidaceae) from Sichuan,China

A new species, Galearis huanglongensis Q.W.Meng & Y.B.Luo, is described and illustrated. It is similar to Galearis cyclochila (Franch. & Sav.) Soó and Galearis diantha (Schltr.) P.F.Hunt, but differs in having a short spur, two elliptical lateral stigma lobes and distinctly separated bursicles. This new species is known only from the type locality, the Huanglong Valley, Songpan County, western Sichuan, China, growing amongst mosses under alpine shrubs at an elevation of about 3000 m. Based on two years of observations of its population size, the species was categorized as critically endangered CR (B1a, B2a) according to the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List Categories and Criteria, Version 3.1. The micromorphology of pollinia and seeds was observed by scanning electron microscopy and compared with that of G. cyclochila and G. diantha.
