The three monotheistic cultures have many common institutions and some of them germinated in pre-monarchic Israel. Reasonably, the essential institutions were in place at that starting point; this work explores the possibility that the Sabbath is one of these institutions. Our mathematical examination points to the potential cultural, civic, and social role of the weekly Sabbath, that is, the Sabbath institution, in controlling deviation from social norms. It begins with an analogy between spread of transgression (defined as lack of conformity with social norms) and of biological infection. Borrowing well-known mathematical methods, we derive solution sets of social equilibrium and study their social stability. The work shows how a weekly Sabbath could in theory enhance social resilience in comparison with a similar assembly with a more natural and longer period, say between New Moon and Full Moon. The examination reveals that an efficient Sabbath institution has the potential to ensure a stable organization and suppress occasional appearances of transgression from cultural norms and boundaries. The work suggests the existence of a sharp threshold governed by the “Basic Sabbath Number ש0”—a critical observance of the Sabbath, or large enough ש0, is required to ensure suppression of transgression. Subsequently, the model is used to explore an interesting question: how old is the Sabbath? The work is interdisciplinary, combining anthropological concepts with mathematical analysis and with archaeological parallels in regards to the findings.

Long-term spatio-temporal datasets of disease incidences have made it clear that many recurring epidemics, especially childhood infections, tend to synchronize in-phase across suburbs. In some special cases, epidemics between suburbs have been found to oscillate in an out-of-phase ('antiphase') relationship for lengthy periods. Here, we use modelling techniques to help explain the presence of in-phase and antiphase synchronization. The nonlinearity of the epidemic dynamics is often such that the intensity of the outbreak influences the phase of the oscillation thereby introducing 'shear', a factor that is found to be important for generating antiphase synchronization. By contrast, the coupling between suburbs via the immigration of infectives tends to enhance in-phase synchronization. The emerging synchronization depends delicately on these opposite factors. We use theoretical results from continuous time models to provide a framework for understanding the relationship between synchronization patterns for different model structures.  相似文献

Ecological foodwebs display complex networks of species interactions. Here we discuss how two species, whether directly interacting or not, can crucially affect each other 'indirectly' through their mutual associations with intermediary species. A technique is presented for quantifying these "indirect effects", so that a simple measure emerges for the degree of overall harm or advantage that a particular species encounters from another in the context of a given foodweb. If the system is one of pure competition, the "direct" interaction between any two species is of course harmful to both. But when the method is applied to such systems it predicts that, if all interactions are allowed for including the indirect, in a large proportion of pair interactions at least one species will be deriving benefit from the other. Computer-generated samples confirm that this proportion is accurately predicted. The many pathways for indirect interaction can thus often reverse the direct connection, so that competing species achieve an interaction here called 'Advantageous in A Community Context' (ACC).  相似文献

The aim of the study was to examine numerous features of argyrophilic proteins related to nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in thyroid tumors, relate them to PCNA expression and evaluate which of these features might be useful in the diagnosis of thyroid lesions. Paraffin sections of 100 thyroid tumors were silver-stained and divided into 9 groups: nodular goiter (NG), simple adenoma (SA), microfollicular adenoma (MFA), follicular carcinoma (FC), follicular variant of papillary carcinoma (PC-F), classical variant of papillary carcinoma (PC-C), Hürthle cell adenoma (HA), Hürthle cell carcinoma (HC), and anaplastic carcinoma (AC). The slides were analyzed with the computerized system for image analysis. A weak correlation was found between PCNA expression and AgNOR size. AC differed significantly from all other examined groups in many features of AgNOR dots. Hürthle cell neoplasms were characterized by the presence of a usually single and relatively large dot. With respect to diagnosing follicular lesions, we found that the evaluation of the total area of dots in the nucleus seemed to be the most useful for discrimination: the assumption of 4.9 micro m2, as a cut-off value, allowed a correct classification of 77% of FC cases. Computer-aided morphometric analysis of AgNORs may be useful in the diagnostics of thyroid lesions.  相似文献

Protein-protein interactions form the proteinaceous network, which plays a central role in numerous processes in the cell. This review highlights the main structures, properties of contact surfaces, and forces involved in protein-protein interactions. The properties of protein contact surfaces depend on their functions. The characteristics of contact surfaces of short-lived protein complexes share some similarities with the active sites of enzymes. The contact surfaces of permanent complexes resemble domain contacts or the protein core. It is reasonable to consider protein-protein complex formation as a continuation of protein folding. The contact surfaces of the protein complexes have unique structure and properties, so they represent prospective targets for a new generation of drugs. During the last decade, numerous investigations have been undertaken to find or design small molecules that block protein dimerization or protein(peptide)-receptor interaction, or on the other hand, induce protein dimerization.  相似文献

In an effort to develop a useful AIDS vaccine or vaccine component, we have generated a combinatorial library of chimeric viruses in which the sequence IGPGRAFYTTKN from the V3 loop of the MN strain of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is displayed in many conformations on the surface of human rhinovirus 14 (HRV14). The V3 loop sequence was inserted into a naturally immunogenic site of the cold-causing HRV14, bridged by linkers consisting of zero to three randomized amino acids on each side. The library of chimeric viruses obtained was subjected to a variety of immunoselection schemes to isolate viruses that provided the most useful presentations of the V3 loop sequence for potential use in a vaccine against HIV. The utility of the presentations was assessed by measures of antigenicity and immunogenicity. Most of the immunoselected chimeras examined were potently neutralized by each of the four different monoclonal anti-V3 loop antibodies tested. Seven of eight chimeric viruses were able to elicit neutralizing antibody responses in guinea pigs against the MN and ALA-1 strains of HIV-1. Three of the chimeras elicited HIV neutralization titers that exceeded those of all but a small number of previously described HIV immunogens. These results indicate that HRV14:HIV-1 chimeras may serve as useful immunogens for stimulating immunity against HIV-1. This method can be used to flexibly reconstruct varied immunogens on the surface of a safe and immunogenic vaccine vehicle.  相似文献

A variety of chemically different compounds inhibit the replication of several serotypes of rhinoviruses (common-cold viruses). We noticed that one of these antiviral compounds, WIN 51711, had an antiviral spectrum clearly distinctive from a consensus spectrum or other capsid-binding compounds, although all of them were shown to share the same binding site. A systematic evaluation of all known rhinovirus capsid-binding compounds against all serotyped rhinoviruses was therefore initiated. Multivariate analysis of the results revealed the existence of two groups of rhinoviruses, which we will call antiviral groups A and B. The differential sensitivity of members of these groups to antiviral compounds suggests the existence of a dimorphic binding site. The antiviral groups turned out to be a reflection of a divergence of rhinovirus serotypes on a much broader level. Similarities in antiviral spectra were highly correlated with sequence similarities, not only of amino acids lining the antiviral compound-binding-site, but also of amino acids of the whole VP1 protein. Furthermore, analysis of epidemiological data indicated that group B rhinoviruses produced more than twice as many clinical infections per serotype than group A rhinoviruses did. Rhinoviruses belonging to the minor receptor group were without exception all computed to lie in the same region of antiviral group B.  相似文献

The highly gregarious goat fish Parupeneus forskalii found in the Red Sea at Eilat, Israel exhibit highly synchronous swimming and feeding activity. Five fish were studied under controlled conditions and highly resolved time‐series of their energy expenditures were measured. All fish demonstrated strong phase synchronization in that their activity levels, although erratic in time and intensity, were collectively coordinated and peaked simultaneously together. The synchronization of these wildly varying, and possibly chaotic signals of energy expenditures, were quantified using phase analysis. We suggest that, ecologically, this collective synchronization is a strategy that increases food‐catch.  相似文献
