Multiplicity of oscillatory phenomena in a range of infra-slow frequencies (<0.01 Hz) has been described in mammalian brains at different levels of organisation. The significance and manifestation in physiology and/or behaviour of many brain infra-slow oscillations (ISO) remain unknown. Examples of this phenomenon are two types of ISO observed in the brains of urethane-anaesthetised rats: infra-slow, rhythmic changes in the rate of action potential firing in a few nuclei of the subcortical visual system and a sleep-like cycle of activation/deactivation visible in the EEG signal. Because both of these rhythmic phenomena involve brain networks that can influence autonomic nervous system activity, we hypothesised that these two brain ISOs can be reflected by rhythmic changes of pupil size. Thus, in the present study, we used simultaneous pupillography and ECoG recording to verify the hypothesised existence of infra-slow oscillations in the pupil size of urethane-anaesthetised rats. The obtained results showed rhythmic changes in the size of the pupils and rhythmic eyeball movements in urethane-anaesthetised rats. The observed rhythms were characterised by two different dominant components in a range of infra-slow frequencies. First, the long component had a period of ≈29 minutes and was present in both the irises and the eyeball movements. Second, the short component had a period of ≈2 minutes and was observed only in the rhythmic constrictions and dilations of the pupils. Both ISOs were simultaneously present in both eyes, and they were synchronised between the left and right eye. The long ISO component was synchronised with the cyclic alternations of the brain state, as revealed by rhythmic changes in the pattern of the ECoG signal. Based on the obtained results, we propose a model of interference of ISO present in different brain systems involved in the control of pupil size.  相似文献

In response to systemic losses of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in the Chesapeake Bay (east coast of North America), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP) and Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) have considered SAV restoration a critical component in Bay restoration programs. In 2003, the CBP created the “Strategy to Accelerate the Protection and Restoration of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in the Chesapeake Bay” in an effort to increase SAV area. As part of this strategy, large‐scale eelgrass (Zostera marina) restoration efforts were initiated in the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers in Maryland. From 2004 to 2007, nearly 4 million Z. marina seeds were dispersed over 10 ha on the Patuxent River and almost 9 million seeds over 16 ha on the Potomac River. Z. marina seedling establishment was consistent throughout the project (<4%); however, restored eelgrass survival was highly dependent on restoration site. Restoration locations on the Patuxent River experienced initial Z. marina seedling germination, but no long‐term plant survival. Restored Z. marina on the Potomac River has persisted and expanded, both vegetatively and sexually, beyond initial seeding areas. Healthy Z. marina beds now cover approximately five acres of the Potomac River bottom for the first time in decades. The differential success of Z. marina restoration efforts in the two rivers is evidence for the necessity of carefully considering site‐specific characteristics when using large‐scale seeding methods to achieve successful SAV restoration.  相似文献

The use of stem or progenitor cells from bone marrow, or peripheral or umbilical cord blood is becoming more common for treatment of diabetic foot problems. These cells promote neovascularization by angiogenic factors and they promote epithelium formation by stimulating cell replication and migration under certain pathological conditions. We investigated the role of CD34 + stem cells from human umbilical cord blood in wound healing using a rat model. Rats were randomly divided into a control group and two groups with diabetes induced by a single dose of 55 mg/kg intraperitoneal streptozocin. Scarred areas 5 mm in diameter were created on the feet of all rats. The diabetic rats constituted the diabetes control group and a diabetes + stem cell group with local injection into the wound site of 0.5 × 106 CD34 + stem cells from human umbilical cord blood. The newly formed skin in the foot wounds following CD34 + stem cell treatment showed significantly improvement by immunohistochemistry and TUNEL staining, and were closer to the wound healing of the control group than the untreated diabetic animals. The increase in FGF expression that accompanied the local injection of CD34 + stem cells indicates that FGF stimulation helped prevent apoptosis. Our findings suggest a promising new treatment approach to diabetic wound healing.  相似文献

Fundamental kinetic studies on the reduction of nitrate, nitrite, and their mixtures were performed with a strain of Pseudomonas denitrificans (ATCC 13867). Methanol served as the carbon source and was supplied in excess (2:1 mole ratio relative to nitrate and/or nitrite). Nitrate and nitrite served as terminal electron acceptors as well as sources of nitrogen for biomass synthesis. The results were explained under the assumption that respiration is a growth-associated process. It was found that the sequence of complete reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas is via nitrite and nitrous oxide.It was found that the specific growth rate of the biomass on either nitrate or nitrite follows Andrews inhibitory kinetics and nitrite is more inhibitory than nitrate. It was also found that the culture has severe maintenance requirements which can be described by Herbert's model, i.e., by self-oxidation of portions of the biomass. The specific maintenance rates at 30 degrees C and pH 7.1 were found to be equal to about 28% of the maximum specific growth rate on nitrate and 23% of the maximum specific growth rate on nitrite. Nitrate and nitrite were found to be involved in a cross-inhibitory noncompetitive kinetic interaction. The extent of this interaction is negligible when the presence of nitrite is low but is considerable when nitrite is present at levels above 15 mg/L.Studies on the effect of temperature have shown that the culture cannot grow at temperatures above 40 degrees C. The optimal temperature for nitrate or nitrite reduction was found to be about 38 degrees C. Using an Arrhenius expression to describe the effect of temperature on the specific growth rates, it was found that the activation energy for the use of nitrate by the culture is 8.6 kcal/mol and 7.21 kcal/mol for nitrite. Arrhenius-type expressions were also used in describing the effect of temperature on each of the parameters appearing in the specific growth rate expressions. Studies on the effect of pH at 30 degrees C have shown that the culture reduces nitrate optimally at a pH between 7.4 and 7.6, and nitrite at a pH between 7.2 and 7.3. The aim of this study was to evaluate the proliferation rate and morphological changes of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells of canine and equine origin (Eq- and CaAdMSC). Investigated cells were exposed to a static magnetic field (MF) with the intensity of 0.5 T. Proliferation activity of cells was determined with the Alamar Blue assay. Obtained results, normalized in respect to the control culture, showed that EqAdMSC exposed to MF maintained a high proliferation status, whereas proliferation activity of CaAdMSC cultured in the presence of MF was decreased. Estimations of population doubling time (PDT) also revealed that EqAdMSCs exposed to static MF achieved a twofold increase in the total number of cells in a shorter amount of time than the control culture. The PDT value obtained for investigated CaAdMSCs indicated that MF exposure resulted in the prolongation of population doubling time. Morphology of cells and cellular composition was investigated using a light inverted microscope and a fluorescent microscope. A scanning electron microscope was used for microvesicles (MVs) imaging. Obtained results showed that both cell types maintained fibroblastic morphology and did not reveal signs of apoptosis or necrosis. However, the MF had an influence on the MVs secretion. While EqAdMSCs propagated in the presence of MF were characterized by the abundant MVs presence, CaAdMSCs revealed poor secretory activity. The approach presented provides complex analysis, which enables one to determine changes in equine and canine cytophysiology.  相似文献

We investigated whether imatinib (Gleevec?, Novartis), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, could improve functional outcome in experimental spinal cord injury. Rats subjected to contusion spinal cord injury were treated orally with imatinib for 5 days beginning 30 minutes after injury. We found that imatinib significantly enhanced blood-spinal cord-barrier integrity, hindlimb locomotor function, sensorimotor integration, and bladder function, as well as attenuated astrogliosis and deposition of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, and increased tissue preservation. These improvements were associated with enhanced vascular integrity and reduced inflammation. Our results show that imatinib improves recovery in spinal cord injury by preserving axons and other spinal cord tissue components. The rapid time course of these beneficial effects suggests that the effects of imatinib are neuroprotective rather than neurorestorative. The positive effects on experimental spinal cord injury, obtained by oral delivery of a clinically used drug, makes imatinib an interesting candidate drug for clinical trials in spinal cord injury.  相似文献

Halogenobenzoates and 5-halogenouracils are commonly applied in industrial and medical fields. From this point of view, it is very important to study the effect of halogens and metal on the above mentioned biologically important ligands. This paper reviews the results of many years’ studies on the influence of halogens (in the series: F → Cl → Br → I) on the electronic system of benzoic acid and uracil. Moreover, the effect of metals (in the series: Mg → Ca → Sr → Ba ; Li → Na → K; in the long series of lanthanide elements: La(III) → Lu(III) except Pm) on the electronic charge distribution in halogenobenzoates is discussed. Systematic changes in the spectra of studied compounds were found. It allowed us to say that ionic potential and electronegativity of elements are the main parameters deciding on the electronic charge distribution in the molecule. Different complementary spectroscopic and quantum-chemical methods were applied in the study.  相似文献

This research attempts to answer the question how the change of selected face elements influences the likeness between the original portrait (sketch) and its modified versions. For this purpose, several series of portraits were created into which changes to the original sizes of eyes, mouth and nose within a scope of +/-14% (every 2%) were introduced. The task for a subject consisted of indicating one portrait out of each row that was the first to be "clearly unlike the original image". In this way, two values were obtained for each feature (lesser and greater than the initial one). These values have been called "the terminal values", i.e. those which, according to the subjects, once exceeded, the portrait becomes unlike the original. The results obtained indicate that the majority of the subjects, as much as 61.7%, consider the face they observe to be "clearly different" when the change of the studied features amounts to at least 8% of the original value, or even 6% in some cases. In addition, it has been noticed that, in the process of identification, men much earlier than women (p=0.049) consider the portraits in the row with the reduction of eye size unlike the original image.  相似文献
