The changing populations of weeds during 13 years of the Broadbalk continuous wheat experiment were analysed to investigate the extent of differences in shortterm variability of cover between species. The data were from two sections of the experiment where winter wheat was grown continuously under herbicide treatment for 13 and 6 years respectively. Logistic regressions were fitted to the data. Equisetum arvense showed significant long-term increases on both sections; long-term trends were also detected in the longer data run for Agrostis stolonifera, Cirsium arvensa, Poa trivialis, Ranunculus arvensis and Vicia sativa, and for Medicago lupulina on the shorter data run. Variation around long-term trends was low in the case of Equisetum, and, in the longer data run, for Cirsium and Tussilago farfara, and high for Poa spp. and Vicia. Cover values on the two sections were positively correlated for Alopecurus myosuroides, Equisetum, Poa annua and Tripleurospermum inodorum. There was a weak correlation between C-S-R strategy and short-term variability; the more competitive species displayed less variability than the ruderal species. Furthermore, species regenerating from persistent seed banks were more variable in the short term than those regenerating from short-lived seed or bud banks. This can be explained by differences in response to year-to-year variation in environmental conditions, those species with persistent seed banks being typically more sensitive to annual fluctuations in the environment than those without. 相似文献

Abstract. Weed communities, comprising 12 introduced species at constant starting densities and three species already present in the seed bank, were followed through three years of continuous winter wheat. The wheat and weeds were subjected to two treatments in a split-plot factorial design, organic contrasting with conventional fertilizer, and ploughing plus hand-roguing contrasting with minimum tillage plus herbicide. The minimum tilled plots developed in a uniform manner, and became dominated by very high densities of Anisantha sterilis. Agrostemma githago and Galium aparine also persisted in these plots at lower densities. The ploughed plots had a lower total density but a greater range of species. Stellaria media, Veronica persica and Avena fatua were the most common; other species occurred at lower densities. The major effect of fertilizer treatment was a greater initial increase by G. aparine on the organic, minimum tilled plots compared with the conventionally fertilized, minimum tilled plots. Species associated with minimum tillage were annuals with either no or a short term seed bank and autumn germination and rather predictable dynamics, whereas species that did well under ploughing were either spring germinating or had a persistent seed bank, implying greater annual variation in population size associated with weather conditions. Summary The extent to which some measure of local crowding can account for the performance of individual plants is examined with reference to populations of two species of annual plant. Only a relatively small proportion of the variation in individual plant yield could be accounted for by measures of local crowding. These included the number of close neighbours, an estimate of the area available to each plant and competitive pressure. A multiple regression that took account of both emergence time and local crowding increased the proportion of variance that could be accounted for up to 50%. Computer simulations of the growth of indivudual plants in monoculture were then caried out in order to determine whether the unexplained variation resulted from fundamental flaws in the models or from unaccounted for sources of variation in the field. The results from the simulations again indicated that only a relatively low proportion of the variation in individual plant yield could be accounted for by emergence time and local density, even though these were known to be the only variables present. These findings are discussed in relation to the relative importance of one-sided and two-sided competition, and the complex cross-correlations that occur between individuals in plant populations. These two factors will make it very difficult for field workers to determine accurately what factors determine individual plant yield and in particular to predict the effects of local crowding on the performance of individual plants. 相似文献

Karyotype analysis by chromosome banding is the standard method for identifying numerical and structural chromosomal aberrations
in pre- and postnatal cytogenetics laboratories. However, the chromosomal origins of markers, subtle translocations, or complex
chromosomal rearrangements are often difficult to identify with certainty. We have developed a novel karyotyping technique,
termed spectral karyotyping (SKY), which is based on the simultaneous hybridization of 24 chromosome-specific painting probes
labeled with different fluorochromes or fluorochrome combinations. The measurement of defined emission spectra by means of
interferometer-based spectral imaging allows for the definitive discernment of all human chromosomes in different colors.
Here, we report the comprehensive karyotype analysis of 16 samples from different cytogenetic laboratories by merging conventional
cytogenetic methodology and spectral karyotyping. This approach could become a powerful tool for the cytogeneticists, because
it results in a considerable improvement of karyotype analysis by identifying chromosomal aberrations not previously detected
by G-banding alone. Advantages, limitations, and future directions of spectral karyotyping are discussed.

Population substructure has important implications for a species' ecology and evolution. As such, knowledge of this structuring is critical for the conservation and management of natural populations. Among marine mammals, many examples exist of species that enjoy a broad geographical distribution, yet are characterized by fine‐scale population subdivisions. Coastal bottlenose dolphins have been studied extensively in a few regions globally, and these studies have highlighted a great diversity in both social strategies and demographic isolation. Here we use molecular genetic markers to examine the degree of population subdivision among three study sites separated by less than 250 km on Little Bahama Bank in the northern Bahamas. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation and microsatellite genotypes were used to assess partitioning of genetic variance among 56 individually recognized coastal ecotype bottlenose dolphins. Although resolved levels of genetic differentiation suggest gene flow among the three study sites, both nuclear and mitochondrial data indicate a significant degree of subdivision within the Little Bahama Bank population, and sex‐based analyses suggest that patterns of dispersal may not be strictly biased toward males. These results corroborate the site fidelity documented through long‐term photo‐identification studies in the NE Bahamas, and highlight the need to consider independent subpopulation units for the conservation and management of coastal bottlenose dolphins in the Bahamas. 相似文献

Solidago gigantea Ait. (goldenrod) belongs to the most expansive environmental weeds, and it is the most dangerous plant-invader of American origin in Europe. The species easily propagates vegetatively, but it also produces large amounts of wind-disseminated achenes that contribute to the colonization of new areas. A sound knowledge of the germination biology of goldenrods is required to control the spread of this invasive species. The objective of this study was to investigate selected aspects of germination of giant goldenrod achenes and to determine: the influence of temperature and humidity on seed dormancy and germination, the content of soluble carbohydrates in seeds and the sensitivity of seeds to selected phytohormones. Unlike native weed species of the same family, S. gigantea seeds did not display symptoms of innate dormancy, and high seed vigor was maintained after storage in a wide range of temperatures, in both dry and moist conditions. The physiological mechanisms behind those traits have not yet been fully explored, but they could be associated with the relatively high sucrose-to-hexose ratio in seeds and significant sensitivity to abscisic acid. More extensive research is required to explain the internal causes for the atypical behavior of goldenrod seeds during dry and moist storage, especially in the context of its invasiveness, because the species has a preference for sites located close to river banks. 相似文献
