Correction of type II breast deformities following conservative cancer surgery.

Breast deformities following conservative cancer surgery are seen with increasing frequency and often represent difficult reconstructive problems. Type II deformities are characterized by localized tissue insufficiency, which can be due to skin insufficiency (type IIa), subcutaneous tissue insufficiency (type IIb), or both (type IIab). Correction of a locally damaged breast is a surgical challenge that can result in a fully restored breast if selection of the surgical procedure is properly carried out. A series of 37 patients who underwent correction of type II deformities from 1980 to 1989 was reviewed. Results obtained with different surgical procedures, including simple submuscular placement of traditional or expandable implants, breast reshaping, transposition of a latissimus dorsi muscle or musculocutaneous flap, TRAM flap, and reverse abdominoplasty, were evaluated. Aesthetic outcome was judged to be good or excellent in 78 percent of patients. Guidelines for selection of the most appropriate surgical procedure according to the defect's etiology, morphology, and location and to the breast's size and shape are presented.     

Interaction between external medium and haem pocket in myoglobin probed by low-temperature optical spectroscopy

The visible absorption spectra of carbonmonoxymyoglobin in the temperature range 300 to 20 K are reported and compared with the analogous spectra of carbonomonoxyhaemoglobin. The temperature dependence of the zeroth, first and second moment of the observed bands is analysed to obtain information on the local dynamics in the proximity of the haem. Contrary to haemoglobin, the first moment of the observed bands in myoglobin is markedly affected by the solvent composition and its value saturates at temperatures at which the solvent undergoes the glass transition. These data indicate that solvent properties influence the haem pocket stereodynamics in myoglobin; moreover, the different behaviour between myoglobin and haemoglobin suggests that the process should involve the surfaces that are buried in the haemoglobin tetramer and exposed to the solvent in myoglobin, and/or the different protein compressibility.     

Mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms in a sample of Albanian population (Tirana)

RFLPs of mtDNA for HpaI, BamHI, HaeII, MspI, AvaII and HincII were analysed in a sample of 100 from collected in Tirana (Albania). Eighteen mtDNA types were identified, four of which are new: two because of new morphs for Hpa/HincII (HpaI-9^Tir/HincII-17^Tir) and AvaII (AvaII-35Tir), and two because of new associations between morphs which were already known. Albanian data were compared with corresponding ones from Calabrians (Southern Italians) and Arbreshes (people of Albanian ancestry living in Calabria). Even though the examined mtDNA markers do not reveal important differences among the three groups, the analysis of both morphs and types shows a trend which places Arbreshes closer to Calabrians than to Albanians.     

Lipidated peptides via post-synthetic thioalkylation promoted by molecular sieves

A thioalkylation procedure, which uses molecular sieves to promote the reaction, was exploited to provide peptides with useful functional groups (lipidic moieties), naturally occurring on proteins as post-translational modifications. The procedure was further implemented to synthesize tailor-made lipidated peptides, interesting tools to investigate biological processes involving their Ras parent proteins. Moreover, the one-pot preparation of multi-alkylated peptides confirms the versatility and flexibility of the employed methodology.
