A new mitochondrial DNA control region survey of the Barbados hawksbill nesting population was undertaken using larger sample
sizes, reanalysis of previously reported samples, and new primers that increase the fragment length sequenced. This work revealed
that haplotypes originally identified as endemic to Barbados were misread sequences. Genetic variants and a geographic subdivision
on a finer scale than has previously been recorded for sea turtles were identified between the Barbados leeward and windward
coasts, indicating the need for sampling at multiple sites to reveal comprehensive genetic variation at national scales. Using
the updated haplotype profiles to re-estimate Barbados’ contribution to Caribbean hawksbill foraging grounds indicated a presence
several-fold larger than previously calculated; a result congruent with the breeding population being one of the largest in

Amphibians are currently suffering a period of mass extinction with approximately 20% of species under severe threat and more than 120 species already extinct. In light of this crisis there is an urgency to establish viable ex situ populations and also find the causes of in situ declines. The role of ultraviolet radiation and Vitamin D3 in amphibian health directly influences both ex situ and in situ populations. Vitamin D3 can be photosynthesised endogenously via UV-B radiation (UV-B), or acquired through the diet, and then metabolised to calcitriol the biologically active hormonal form. Although, there is a lack of literature concerning Vitamin D3 requirements and calcitriol synthesis in amphibians, amphibians are likely to have similar Vitamin D3 requirements and metabolic processes as other vertebrates due to the phylogenetically conservative nature of calcitriol biosynthesis. Deficiencies in calcitriol in amphibians result in nutritional metabolic bone disease (NMBD) and could compromise reproduction and immunity. However, excess biologically active UV radiation has also proven detrimental across all three amphibian life stages and therefore could impact both in situ and ex situ populations. Here we review the role and necessity of UV-B and calcitriol in amphibians and the potential for negative impacts due to excessive exposure to UV radiation. We also identify priorities for research that could provide critical information for maintaining healthy in ex situ and in situ populations of amphibians. 相似文献

The crystal and molecular structures of 4-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-5-yl)benzonitrile hydrochloride (CGS 16949A) and bis(p-cyanophenyl)imidazo-1-yl methane hemisuccinate (CGS 18320B) have been determined as part of structure-activity relationship studies of non-steroidal aromatase inhibitors. CGS 18320B crystallizes with two inhibitor molecules in the asymmetric unit that are similar in conformation. The cyanophenyl groups and the imidazole moieties in the CGS 18320B molecules display a propellor-like arrangement. The orientation of the imidazole ring in CGS 16949A, which is constrained by the piperidine ring, differs by about 80 degrees from the orientations in both CGS 18320B molecules. The conformations of both compounds are consistent with the proposed model (Banting et al. (1988) J. Enz. Inhibit., 2, 216) for inhibitor binding by positioning of the cyanophenyl group in the steroid A-ring binding site and interaction of the imidazole nitrogen with the iron of the haem. 相似文献
