The imprint of the geographical, evolutionary and ecological context on species-area relationships 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Species-area relationships (SAR) are fundamental in the understanding of biodiversity patterns and of critical importance for predicting species extinction risk worldwide. Despite the enormous attention given to SAR in the form of many individual analyses, little attempt has been made to synthesize these studies. We conducted a quantitative meta-analysis of 794 SAR, comprising a wide span of organisms, habitats and locations. We identified factors reflecting both pattern-based and dynamic approaches to SAR and tested whether these factors leave significant imprints on the slope and strength of SAR. Our analysis revealed that SAR are significantly affected by variables characterizing the sampling scheme, the spatial scale, and the types of organisms or habitats involved. We found that steeper SAR are generated at lower latitudes and by larger organisms. SAR varied significantly between nested and independent sampling schemes and between major ecosystem types, but not generally between the terrestrial and the aquatic realm. Both the fit and the slope of the SAR were scale-dependent. We conclude that factors dynamically regulating species richness at different spatial scales strongly affect the shape of SAR. We highlight important consequences of this systematic variation in SAR for ecological theory, conservation management and extinction risk predictions. 相似文献

A technique is described for identifying and locating posttranslational modifications (PTMs) in peptides and proteins of known sequence by interpretation of c(n) ion signals generated by in-source decay during delayed ion extraction in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Sites of phosphorylation in seven synthetic peptides were determined, as was the location of both the heme group and N,N,N-trimethyllysine in yeast cytochrome c. A semi-automated data analysis process facilitates the identification of segments of the sequence on each side of the PTM, permitting its placement at the junction of the segments and definition of the added mass. A graphical display facilitates illustration of both the location and mass of the PTM. 相似文献

Catalysis by thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) from Escherichia coli requires alternation between two domain arrangements. One of these conformations has been observed by X-ray crystallography (Waksman G, Krishna TSR, Williams CH Jr, Kuriyan J, 1994, J Mol Biol 236:800-816). This form of TrxR, denoted FO, permits the reaction of enzyme-bound reduced FAD with a redox-active disulfide on TrxR. As part of an investigation of conformational changes and intermediates in catalysis by TrxR, an X-ray structure of the FO form of TrxR with both the FAD and active site disulfide reduced has been determined. Reduction after crystallization resulted in significant local conformation changes. The isoalloxazine ring of the FAD cofactor, which is essentially planar in the oxidized enzyme, assumes a 34 degree "butterfly" bend about the N(5)-N(10) axis in reduced TrxR. Theoretical calculations reported by others predict ring bending of 15-28 degrees for reduced isoalloxazines protonated at N(1). The large bending in reduced TrxR is attributed in part to steric interactions between the isoalloxazine ring and the sulfur of Cys138, formed by reduction of the active site disulfide, and is accompanied by changes in the positions and interactions of several of the ribityl side-chain atoms of FAD. The bending angle in reduced TrxR is larger than that for any flavoprotein in the Protein Data Bank. Distributions of bending angles in published oxidized and reduced flavoenzyme structures are different from those found in studies of free flavins, indicating that the protein environment has a significant effect on bending. 相似文献

MOTIVATION: To enhance the usefulness of the I.M.A.G.E. Consortium (Lennon et al., 1996, Genomics, 33, 151-152) cDNA clone collection by directed analysis and organization of their associated Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs), thus enabling effective mining of the immense amounts of public cDNA information. RESULTS: This paper introduces the IMAGEne suite of tools, which clusters ESTs around known genes, then ranks each clone within a cluster. IMAGEne filters data from known gene sequence databases and the GenBank's EST database (Boguski and Shuler, 1995, Nature Genet., 10, 369-371). It applies biological criteria in connection with judicious use of the BLAST (Altschul et al., 1990, J. Mol. Biol., 215), FASTA (Pearson and Lipman, 1988, Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA, 85, 2444-2448; Pearson, 1990, Methods Enzymol., 183, 63-98; Gusfield, 1997, Algorithms on Strings, Trees, and Sequences, Cambridge University Press), and SIM (Huang et al., 1990, Comput. Appl. Biosci., 6, 373-381) tools to form known gene clusters. It then applies criteria derived from experienced biologists to select the best representative I.M.A.G.E. clone for a gene. The tool provides an intuitive Java interface for query and display of the gene and its associated clones, thus directing researchers in selecting a clone that will best enhance their research. An important product is a listing of clones that best represent all known genes. The listing will be used for re-arraying clones into minimally redundant Master Arrays. Both the listings and Master Arrays will be made available to the public, which will be a valuable resource to the genomic community in furthering discovery in the area of gene function. 相似文献

Secondary amide derivatives of coumaric and ferulic acid are shown to undergo photoisomerization, forming a photostationary mixture of E- and Z-isomers. When the same chromophores are incorporated in rotaxanes, the extent of conversion to the Z-isomers is much smaller.
