Objective
A number of social and sexual risk factors for bacterial vaginosis (BV) have been described. It is important to understand whether these factors are associated with non-participation or attrition of participants from longitudinal studies in order to examine potential for recruitment or attrition bias. We describe factors associated with participation and attrition in a 24-month prospective cohort study, investigating incident BV among Australian women who have sex with women.Study Design and Setting
Participants negative for prevalent BV were offered enrolment in a longitudinal cohort study. Participants self-collected vaginal samples and completed questionnaires 3-monthly to endpoint (BV-positive/BV-negative by 24 months). Factors associated with participation in the cohort study were examined by logistic regression and factors associated with attrition from the cohort were examined by Cox regression.Results
The cross-sectional study recruited 457 women. 334 BV-negative women were eligible for the cohort and 298 (89%, 95%CI 85, 92) enrolled. Lower educational levels (aOR 2.72, 95%CI 1.09, 6.83), smoking (aOR 2.44, 95%CI 1.13, 5.27), past BV symptoms (aOR 3.42, 95%CI 1.16, 10.10) and prior genital warts (aOR 2.71, 95%CI 1.14, 6.46) were associated with non-participation; a partner co-enrolling increased participation (aOR 3.73, 95%CI 1.43, 9.70). 248 participants (83%, 95%CI 78, 87) were retained to study endpoint (BV-negative at 24 months or BV-positive at any stage). Attrition was associated being <30 yrs (aHR 2.15, 95%CI 1.13, 4.10) and a male partner at enrolment (aHR 6.12, 95%CI 1.99, 18.82).Conclusion
We achieved high participation and retention levels in a prospective cohort study and report factors influencing participation and retention of participants over a 24-month study period, which will assist in the design and implementation of future cohort studies in sexual health and disease. 相似文献92.

Most modern population dynamics analyses of time series use simple population indices for ecological inference. These indices,
collected for many years for various agricultural pests or game animals, are generally believed not to distort systematically
feedback estimates because the assumption of linearity to population size roughly holds. To assess the relative importance
of this assumption, we examined the effect of nonlinearity in a burrow index for voles on feedback estimates obtained through
autoregressive modeling. We show that the issue of linearity is of less importance to ecological inference because the feedback
estimates are routinely obtained on a logarithmic scale. Transforming data to logs has a strong linearization effect, removing
most of the nonlinearity observed on the original scale. We conclude that the statistical tools for ecological inference,
such as autoregressive log-linear models, are sufficiently robust to the systematic error imposed by index nonlinearity and
that indices are valuable sources of ecological information even in situations when the assumed linear functional forms to
population size were not exactly validated. We suggest that for time series modelers, the issue of a large sampling variation
in small “noisy” populations is by far a more burning one than the systematic error due to index nonlinearity. 相似文献

α-l-Rhamnosidase (EC 3.2.1.40) is a biotechnologically important enzyme used for derhamnosylation of many natural compounds. The extracellular α-l-rhamnosidase was purified from the culture of Aspergillus terreus grown on l-rhamnose-rich medium. This enzyme was found to be thermo- and alkali-tolerant, able to operate at 70 °C and pH 8.0. The α-l-rhamnosidase cDNA was cloned from A. terreus, sequenced, and expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris as a fully functional protein. The recombinant protein was purified to apparent homogeneity and biochemically characterized. Both the native and the recombinant α-l-rhamnosidases catalyzed the conversion of rutin into quercetin-3-glucopyranoside (isoquercitrin), a pharmacologically significant flavonoid usable in nutraceutics. This procedure has high volumetric productivity (up to 300 g/L) and yields the product void of unwanted quercetin. The significant advantage of our expression system consists in shorter production times, up to fourfold increase in enzyme yields and the absence of unwanted β-d-glucosidase as compared to the native production system. Thanks to its unique properties, this enzyme is applicable in a selective synthesis/hydrolysis of various rhamnose containing structures. 相似文献

Light and cytokinins are known to be the key players in the regulation of plant senescence. In detached leaves, the retarding effect of light on senescence is well described; however, it is not clear to what extent is this effect connected with changes in endogenous cytokinin levels. We have performed a detailed analysis of changes in endogenous content of 29 cytokinin forms in detached leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana (wild‐type and 3 cytokinin receptor double mutants). Leaves were kept under different light conditions, and changes in cytokinin content were correlated with changes in chlorophyll content, efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry, and lipid peroxidation. In leaves kept in darkness, we have observed decreased content of the most abundant cytokinin free bases and ribosides, but the content of cis‐zeatin increased, which indicates the role of this cytokinin in the maintenance of basal leaf viability. Our findings underscore the importance of light conditions on the content of specific cytokinins, especially N6‐(Δ2‐isopentenyl)adenine. On the basis of our results, we present a scheme summarizing the contribution of the main active forms of cytokinins, cytokinin receptors, and light to senescence regulation. Helices are the most common elements of RNA secondary structure. Despite intensive investigations of various types of RNAs, the evolutionary history of the formation of new helices (novel helical structures) remains largely elusive. Here, by studying the nuclear ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 (ITS2), a fast-evolving part of the eukaryotic nuclear ribosomal operon, we identify two possible types of helix formation: one type is “dichotomous helix formation”—transition from one large helix to two smaller helices by invagination of the apical part of a helix, which significantly changes the shape of the original secondary structure but does not increase its complexity (i.e., the total length of the RNA). An alternative type is “lateral helix formation”—origin of an extra helical region by the extension of a bulge loop or a spacer in a multi-helix loop of the original helix, which does not disrupt the pre-existing structure but increases RNA size. Moreover, we present examples from the RNA sequence literature indicating that both types of helix formation may have implications for RNA evolution beyond ITS2. 相似文献

Changes in cell viability, proliferation, cell and nuclear morphology including nuclear and DNA fragmentation induced by 0.05 and 1 mM CdSO4 (Cd2+) in tobacco BY-2 cell line (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were studied in the course of 7 days. Simultaneously changes in endogenous contents of both free and conjugated forms of polyamines (PAs) were investigated for 3 days. The application of 0.05 mM Cd2+ evoked decline of cell viability to approximately 60% during the first 24 h of treatment. Later on degradation of cytoplasmic strands, formation of the stress granules and vesicles, modifications in size and shape of the nuclei, including their fragmentation, were observed in the surviving cells. Their proliferation was blocked and cells elongated. Beginning the first day of treatment TUNEL-positive nuclei were detected in cells cultivated in medium containing 0.05 mM Cd2+. Treatment with highly toxic 1 mM Cd2+ induced fast decrease of cell viability (no viable cells remained after 6-h treatment) and cell death occurred before DNA cleavage might be initiated. The exposure of tobacco BY-2 cells to 0.05 mM Cd2+ resulted in a marked accumulation of total PAs (represented by the sum of free PAs and their perchloric acid (PCA)-soluble and PCA-insoluble conjugates) during 3-day treatment. The increase in total PA contents was primarily caused by the increase in putrescine (Put) concentration. The accumulation of free spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm) at 12 and 24 h in 0.05 mM Cd2+ treated BY-2 cells and high contents of Spd and especially Spm determined in dead cells after I mM Cd2+ application was observed. The participation of PA conjugation with hydroxycinnamic acids and PA oxidative deamination in maintaining of free PA levels in BY-2 cells under Cd2+-induced oxidative stress is discussed. 相似文献

Measuring Biomass and Carbon Stock in Resprouting Woody Plants 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Resprouting multi-stemmed woody plants form an important component of the woody vegetation in many ecosystems, but a clear methodology for reliable measurement of their size and quick, non-destructive estimation of their woody biomass and carbon stock is lacking. Our goal was to find a minimum number of sprouts, i.e., the most easily obtainable, and sprout parameters that should be measured for accurate sprout biomass and carbon stock estimates. Using data for 5 common temperate woody species, we modelled carbon stock and sprout biomass as a function of an increasing number of sprouts in an interaction with different sprout parameters. The mean basal diameter of only two to five of the thickest sprouts and the basal diameter and DBH of the thickest sprouts per stump proved to be accurate estimators for the total sprout biomass of the individual resprouters and the populations of resprouters, respectively. Carbon stock estimates were strongly correlated with biomass estimates, but relative carbon content varied among species. Our study demonstrated that the size of the resprouters can be easily measured, and their biomass and carbon stock estimated; therefore, resprouters can be simply incorporated into studies of woody vegetation. 相似文献
