Both local and landscape-scale habitat variables influence the abundance of wetland breeding birds. Few studies, however, simultaneously assess the effects of habitat variables at multiple spatial scales or consider effects on reproductive success. Therefore, we examined the effects of wetland and landscape-scale habitat variables on the abundance of nine breeding bird species and the effects of nest, wetland, or landscape-scale habitat variables on the nest success, clutch size, or number of fledglings of four species at 15 cattail (Typha sp.)-dominated wetlands in an agricultural region around Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. The abundance of Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis), Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), and Marsh Wren (Cistothorus palustris) increased as wetland water depth increased; the abundance of Common Moorhen and Marsh Wren increased as wetland size increased; and the abundance of Marsh Wren increased as the amount of wetland in the surrounding landscape increased. Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) nest success decreased as nest cover increased. Clutch sizes were uninfluenced by the habitat variables that we considered. The number of Red-winged Blackbird fledglings per successful nest increased as wetland size increased and as the amount of wetland in the surrounding landscape increased. We speculate that food limitation in small wetlands may be responsible for the pattern in Red-winged Blackbird fledging success. The abundance and nest success of Virginia Rail (Rallus limicola) and Sora (Porzana carolina) were uninfluenced by the habitat variables we considered. Future research should consider mate attraction and productivity in relation to local and landscape-scale habitat variables for these and other secretive species. Our study suggests that wetland conservation will be most effective if it considers habitat variables at multiple spatial scales.  相似文献

Arginine-specific gingipain and lysine-specific gingipain are two major cysteine proteinases produced by Porphyromonas gingivalis. To clarify the role of gingipains in the interaction between P. gingivalis and the innate immune system, CHO reporter cells expressing TLR2 or TLR4 were stimulated with wildtype or gingipain-deficient P. gingivalis cells and activation of nuclear factor-kappaB in these cells was examined. While CHO/CD14 cells and 7.19 cells, an MD-2-defective mutant derived from CHO/CD14 cells, failed to respond to wild-type P. gingivalis, they responded to gingipain-deficient P. gingivalis. On the other hand, CHO/CD14/TLR2 cells responded to both wild-type and gingipain-deficient P. gingivalis. These results suggested that gingipains have no effects on TLR2-dependent signaling from P. gingivalis but have inhibitory effects on TLR2-and TLR4-independent signaling in CHO cells. Indeed, the activity of gingipain-deficient P. gingivalis to induce the activation of 7.19 cells was diminished after treatment of the bacterial cells with gingipains. We next partially purified bacterial cell components activating 7.19 cells from gingipain-deficient P. gingivalis. The activity of the partially purified components was diminished by treatment with heat or gingipains. It is also noteworthy that anti-CD14 mAb inhibited the activation of 7.19 cells induced by the partially purified components. These results indicated that the components of P. gingivalis that were able to induce TLR2-and TLR4-independent signaling were inactivated by gingipains before being recognized by CD14. The inactivation of the components would be helpful for P. gingivalis to escape from the innate immune system.  相似文献

The phylogeny and taxonomy of the drosophilids have been the subject of extensive investigations. Recently, Grimaldi (1990) has challenged some common conceptions, and several sets of molecular data have provided information not always compatible with other taxonomic knowledge or consistent with each other. We present the coding nucleotide sequence of the Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase gene (Sod) for 15 species, which include the medfly Ceratitis capitata (family Tephritidae), the genera Chymomyza and Zaprionus, and representatives of the subgenera Dorsilopha, Drosophila, Hirtodrosophila, Scaptodrosophila, and Sophophora. Phylogenetic analysis of the Sod sequences indicates that Scaptodrosophila and Chymomyza branched off the main lineage before the major Drosophila radiations. The presence of a second intron in Chymomyza and Scaptodrosophila (as well as in the medfly) confirms the early divergence of these two taxa. This second intron became deleted from the main lineage before the major Drosophila radiations. According to the Sod sequences, Sophophora (including the melanogaster, obscura, saltans, and willistoni species groups) is older than the subgenus Drosophila; a deep branch splits the willistoni and saltans groups from the melanogaster and obscura groups. The genus Zaprionus and the subgenera Dorsilopha and Hirtodrosophila appear as branches of a prolific “bush” that also embraces the numerous species of the subgenus Drosophila. The Sod results corroborate in many, but not all, respects Throckmorton's (King, R.C. (ed) Handbook of Genetics. Plenum Press, New York, pp. 421–469, 1975) phylogeny; are inconsistent in some important ways with Grimaldi's (Bull. Am. Museum Nat. Hist. 197:1–139, 1990) cladistic analysis; and also are inconsistent with some inferences based on mitochondrial DNA data. The Sod results manifest how, in addition to the information derived from nucleotide sequences, structural features (i.e., the deletion of an intron) can help resolve phylogenetic issues. We experimentally examined the effects of pollen composition on progeny fitness in the self-compatible, annual plant Chamaecrista fasciculata. Plants were hand-pollinated with single- and mixed-donor pollen loads and with various combinations of self- and outcross pollen. For outcrosses, pollen was obtained from two plants at each of two different distances within the same subpopulation as the female parent. Seedlings from all crosses were planted back into the maternal site. For single-donor crosses, seed weight, progeny fruit production, and overall relative fitness were significantly higher for outcross, as compared to self-treatments, but we found no significant differences among outcross sources. For all fitness components, the value observed for crosses derived from mixed loads was intermediate between the values for the singledonor crosses that comprised the mixed load. In a parallel experiment, an analysis of seed paternity of progeny which resulted from pollen mixtures of self- and outcross pollen showed random paternity in two maternal families, and significant excess of outcross in one family. Our results demonstrate that mixed pollen loads do not confer a fitness advantage to the maternal plant in this species, and that the fitness observed for progeny derived from mixed loads is generally consistent with a hypothesis of random paternity.  相似文献

The phenylpropanoid enzyme 4-coumarate:coenzyme A ligase (4CL) is considered necessary to activate the hydroxycinnamic acids for the biosynthesis of the coniferyl and sinapyl alcohols subsequently polymerized into lignin. To clarify the role played by 4CL in the biosynthesis of the guaiacyl (G) and syringyl (S) units characteristic of angiosperm lignin, we generated 4CL antisense Arabidopsis lines having as low as 8% residual 4CL activity. The plants had decreases in thioglycolic acid-extractable lignin correlating with decreases in 4CL activity. Nitrobenzene oxidation of cell walls from bolting stems revealed a significant decrease in G units in 4CL-suppressed plants; however, levels of S lignin units were unchanged in even the most severely 4CL-suppressed plants. These effects led to a large decrease in the G/S ratio in these plants. Our results suggest that an uncharacterized metabolic route to sinapyl alcohol, which is independent of 4CL, may exist in Arabidopsis. They also demonstrate that repression of 4CL activity may provide an avenue to manipulate angiosperm lignin subunit composition in a predictable manner.  相似文献

Introgression can introduce novel genetic variation at a faster rate than mutation alone and result in adaptive introgression when adaptive alleles are maintained in the recipient genome over time by natural selection. A previous study from our group demonstrated adaptive introgression from Populus balsamifera into P. trichocarpa in a target genomic region. Here we expand our local ancestry analysis to the whole genome of both parents to provide a comprehensive view of introgression patterns and to identify additional candidate regions for adaptive introgression genomewide. Populus trichocarpa is a large, fast‐growing tree of mild coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest, whereas P. balsamifera is a smaller stature tree of continental and boreal regions with intense winter cold. The species hybridize where they are parapatric. We detected asymmetric patterns of introgression across the whole genome of these two poplar species adapted to contrasting environments, with stronger introgression from P. balsamifera to P. trichocarpa than vice versa. Admixed P. trichocarpa individuals contained more genomic regions with unusually high levels of introgression (19 regions) and also the largest introgressed genome fragment (1.02 Mb) compared with admixed P. balsamifera (nine regions). Our analysis also revealed numerous candidate regions for adaptive introgression with strong signals of selection, notably related to disease resistance, and enriched for genes that may play crucial roles in survival and adaptation. Furthermore, we detected a potential overrepresentation of subtelomeric regions in P. balsamifera introgressed into P. trichocarpa and possible protection of sex‐determining regions from interspecific gene flow.  相似文献

A ouabain-insensitive Mg2+-ATPase present in a microsomal fraction prepared from the dog submandibular gland was studied. This Mg2+-ATPase was inhibited by increasing concentrations of NaCl, KCl, RbCl and CsCl. The addition of an osmotically equal amount of sucrose was without effect. This inhibition was obtained over a pH range of from 6.3 to 8.8. The Mg2+-ATPase present in microsomes treated with NaI showed a similar inhibition. These results indicate that it is advisable to keep the ionic strength constant in solutions used to obtain (Na++K+)-ATPase activities.  相似文献

Memory conformity occurs when an individual endorses what other individuals remember about past events. Research on memory conformity is currently dominated by a ‘forensic’ perspective, which views the phenomenon as inherently undesirable. This is because conformity not only distorts the accuracy of an individual''s memory, but also produces false corroboration between individuals, effects that act to undermine criminal justice systems. There is growing awareness, however, that memory conformity may be interpreted more generally as an adaptive social behavior regulated by explicit mentalizing mechanisms. Here, we provide novel evidence in support of this emerging alternative theoretical perspective. We carried out a memory conformity experiment which revealed that explicit belief-simulation (i.e. using one''s own beliefs to model what other people believe) systematically biases conformity towards like-minded individuals, even when there is no objective evidence that they have a more accurate memory than dissimilar individuals. We suggest that this bias is functional, i.e. adaptive, to the extent that it fosters trust, and hence cooperation, between in-group versus out-group individuals. We conclude that memory conformity is, in more fundamental terms, a highly desirable product of explicit mentalizing mechanisms that promote adaptive forms of social learning and cooperation.  相似文献

Background:

Identifying adverse events and near misses is essential to improving safety in the health care system. Patients are capable of reliably identifying and reporting adverse events. The effect of a patient safety reporting system used by families of pediatric inpatients on reporting of adverse events by health care providers has not previously been investigated.

Methods:

Between Nov. 1, 2008, and Nov. 30, 2009, families of children discharged from a single ward of British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital were asked to respond to a questionnaire about adverse events and near misses during the hospital stay. Rates of reporting by health care providers for this period were compared with rates for the previous year. Family reports for specific incidents were matched with reports by health care providers to determine overlap.

Results:

A total of 544 familes responded to the questionnaire. The estimated absolute increase in reports by health care providers per 100 admissions was 0.5% (95% confidence interval −1.8% to 2.7%). A total of 321 events were identified in 201 of the 544 family reports. Of these, 153 (48%) were determined to represent legitimate patient safety concerns. Only 8 (2.5%) of the adverse events reported by families were also reported by health care providers.

Interpretation:

The introduction of a family-based system for reporting adverse events involving pediatric inpatients, administered at the time of discharge, did not change rates of reporting of adverse events and near misses by health care providers. Most reports submitted by families were not duplicated in the reporting system for health care providers, which suggests that families and staff members view safety-related events differently. However, almost half of the family reports represented legitimate patient safety concerns. Families appeared capable of providing valuable information for improving the safety of pediatric inpatients. It has been estimated that adverse events occur in about 1% of children treated in hospital and that, on average, 60% of these events are preventable.1 To increase institutional awareness of adverse events, hospitals have implemented systems to encourage health care providers to report adverse events.2 The reporting of adverse events can be improved by making electronic systems for reporting readily accessible3 and by ensuring a “just culture,” which includes nonpunitive reporting policies.4 However, adverse events reported by health care providers account for only a small fraction of total adverse events as determined by chart review.5 Time pressures to treat patients, fear of punishment, lack of belief in the benefit of reporting and differing opinions of what defines a reportable event contribute to low reporting rates.6 However, patients and their families are readily available, keen and motivated observers who may not be subject to these reporting barriers. Family members are capable of observing and reporting adverse events in a variety of clinical settings.7 It is known that the interpretation of safety events and the threshold for reporting differ among health care disciplines and individual health care providers.6 However, it is not clear how families of pediatric patients interpret safety-related events or what their threshold would be for reporting events. The purpose of this study was to test whether the introduction of an adverse event reporting system for use by families of pediatric patients at the time of discharge from a surgical ward would significantly change the rate of reporting of adverse events by health care providers. We also evaluated the types of events that families reported, the relevance of these events with respect to patient safety, families’ desires for anonymous reporting and families’ assessments of institutional responses to reported events. We anticipated that health care providers’ reporting rates would rise with the introduction of the family reporting system, on the assumption that greater attention would be paid to reporting safety-related events on the ward. We also anticipated that families would provide useful information about safety-related events, at least some of the time. In particular, we thought that facilitating communication from the patient’s family directly to the study institution’s Quality, Safety and Outcome Improvement Department would allow more opportunities to improve safety through changes in practice.  相似文献
