This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of two different biotypes of the sweetpotato whitefly,Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), on the induction of squash silverleaf (SSL), and to determine if double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) occurs in geographically
remote populations of the two biotypes. Recently collected B-biotype whiteflies from Florida, Arizona, Mississippi, and Texas
(SPW-B) all contained a 7.0 kb dsRNA molecule. Kb dsRNA molecule. Laboratory colonies of A-biotype whiteflies that were originally
collected in 1981 from cotton in Arizona and California did not contain the 7.0 Kb dsRNA. When the two biotypes were compared
only the SPW-B induced rapid onset, grade 5, SSL. DsRNA similar to that found in adult SPW-B was concentrated in whitefly
nymphs, but host plant leaf tissue did not contain any consistent dsRNA molecules. SPW-A only induced low-grade SSL and progeny
of SPW-A that were fed on pumpkin plants displaying SSL did not acquire the ability to express dsRNA or induce SSL. Our data
suggest that dsRNA is not directly involved in the induction of SSL and that SSL is a host-specific response, to a feeding
injury induced by B-biotype whiteflies. The origin and source of the 7.0 Kb dsRNA molecule remains enigmatic but its expression
is constant in the whitefly biotype that is responsible for the induction of SSL and several other plant disorders in the

Lesions of the area postrema (AP) and immediately adjacent nucleus tractus solitarii cause a syndrome of permanent weight loss with little disruption to behavioral controls of body weight regulation. There is also a permanent polydipsia and elevated salt appetite, which appear to be secondary to deficits in renal conservation of water and sodium. Developing preferences for live female models of the same or other species in white peking ducklings
The preferences of white Peking ducklings (Anas platyrhynchos) for live models was evaluated for the first 7 days of life. The models were all females: a rouen duck (Anas platyrhynchos), a white Peking duck, and a blue Andalusian chicken (Gallus gallus). In three different experiments the orientation of the models was toward the subjects, away from the subjects, and toward the subjects but with fences around the models (to control for model aggressiveness). In all cases the subjects preferred the rouen duck and not the white Peking model or the chicken. In addition, when the models were facing away from the subjects there was a significant peak of preference that appeared on day 4. A major hypothesis to explain the causal initiation of protogynous sex reversal is that females change sex upon reaching a critical size. A study of the coral reef fish Anthias squamipinnis shows that the size hypothesis does not hold. Females from two neighbouring, but spatially discrete and probably genetically homogeneous populations on Aldabra Island changed sex at distinctly different sizes. Previous laboratory and field studies in which sex reversal has followed the removal of a male from social groups have been uncontrolled and thus permit the interpretation that sex reversal is caused by non-specific social disruption or by causes other than male removal. In this study, a male was removed from each of eleven single-male and five multi-male social groups in the laboratory ( N = 8 male removals) and in the field ( N = 19 male removals). In each group, the result was that one female changed sex. Laboratory controls made it unlikely that sex reversal was induced by non-specific disruption and field observations showed that sex reversals resulted from male removals and were not coincidental, ongoing events. Previous statements that sex change is controlled by the presence or absence of a male, by inhibition of a female's tendency to change sex, or by aggression or dominance are shown, by an analysis of the complexity of issues, to be premature. Gonadal histology on 130 specimens confirmed that this species is a monandric, protogynous hermaphrodite and provided details of gonadal transformation. 相似文献

To define the capacity of glucocorticoids to regulate tissue damage associated with inflammation more clearly, we have studied the effects of dexamethasone on human alveolar macrophage secretion of both a variety of metalloproteinases and also the counter-regulatory tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP). We found that dexamethasone selectively and coordinately inhibited expression of the following human metalloproteinases: interstitial collagenase, stromelysin, and the 92-kDa type IV collagenase, as well as TIMP. Both basal and LPS-stimulated cells exhibited similar degrees of inhibition, with greater than 50% decrease in secretion of all enzymes and TIMP observed at dexamethasone concentrations of greater than or equal to 10(-8) M in serum-containing medium. The effects of dexamethasone were mediated at a pretranslational level. In summary, our results indicate that glucocorticoids suppress the matrix-degrading phenotype that is characteristic of mature human mononuclear phagocytes, and block the effects of the most potent known signal for upregulation of metalloproteinase secretion. Summary The renal localization and the site of synthesis of epidermal growth factor (EGF) were investigated in the rat kidney by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization techniques. EGF was localized in the cells of the thick ascending limb of Henle (TAL) and distal convoluted tubule (DCT). At the ultrastructural level, EGF immunoreactivity was distributed on the apical membrane and trans-Golgi complex of the TAL and DCT cells. These segments of the rat nephron also hybridized to prepro-EGF cRNA probes in a specific manner, indicating that TAL and DCT are the sites of EGF synthesis in the rat kidney. 相似文献

Glucosephosphate isomerase (EC 5.3.1.9) of Schistosoma mansoni is inhibited competitively by a number of tetrose, pentose, and hexose phosphates with inhibitor constant (Ki) values in the range of 0.5 to 400 μM. The most potent inhibitor is 5-phospho-d-arabinonate which resembles the cis-enediolate transition state intermediate of the reaction. These analogs were also found to be effective inhibitors of the production of lactate from glucose by suitably supplemented worm homogenates. The rank order of potency of inhibition of glycolysis was inversely related to the magnitudes of the Ki values for glucosephosphate isomerase. These Ki values were similar to those previously reported for mammalian glucosephosphate isomerase, suggesting similarities in the steric and electronic characteristics of the active sites of these isofunctional enzymes. This conclusion was further supported by the observed pH dependence of the inhibition by 5-phospho-d-arabinonate. Although glucosephosphate isomerase is not a rate-limiting enzyme of glycolysis, in the conventional sense, its selective inhibition could be of chemotherapeutic importance, in part because of the accumulation in glycolyzing systems of glucose 6-phosphate which is a potent feedback inhibitor of hexokinase. 相似文献
