The emergence of viruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and Nipah virus has underscored the role of animal reservoirs in human disease and the need for reservoir surveillance. Here, we used a panviral DNA microarray to investigate the death of a captive beluga whale in an aquatic park. A highly divergent coronavirus, tentatively named coronavirus SW1, was identified in liver tissue from the deceased whale. Subsequently, the entire genome of SW1 was sequenced, yielding a genome of 31,686 nucleotides. Phylogenetic analysis revealed SW1 to be a novel virus distantly related to but most similar to group III coronaviruses. 相似文献

Increased resistance to generalist herbivores in invasive populations of the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Escape from enemies in the native range is often assumed to contribute to the successful invasion of exotic species. Following optimal defence theory, which assumes a trade‐off between herbivore resistance and plant growth, some have predicted that the success of invasive species could be the result of the evolution of lower resistance to herbivores and increased allocation of resources to growth and reproduction. Lack of evidence for ubiquitous costs of producing plant toxins, and the recognition that invasive species may escape specialist, but not generalist enemies, has led to a new prediction: invasive species may escape ecological trade‐offs associated with specialist herbivores, and evolve increased, rather than decreased, production of defensive compounds that are effective at deterring generalist herbivores in the introduced range. We tested the performance of two generalist lepidopteran herbivores, Trichoplusia ni and Orgyia vetusta, when raised on diets of native and invasive populations of the California poppy, Eschscholzia californica. Pupae of T. ni were significantly larger when reared on native populations. Similarly, caterpillars of O. vetusta performed significantly better when raised on native populations, indicating that invasive populations of the California poppy are more resistant to herbivores than native populations. The chance of successful establishment of some non‐indigenous plant species may be increased by retaining resistance to generalist herbivores, and in some cases, invasive species may be able to escape ecological trade‐offs in their new range and evolve, as we observed, even greater resistance to generalist herbivores than native plants. 相似文献

Vocalizations of Belding's ground squirrels (Spermophilus beldingi) were recorded during the summer of 1982 near Tioga Pass in the central Sierra Nevada of California. Sonagrams were made and call parameters were measured. Discriminant function analyses revealed that multiple-note calls (‘trills’) differed acoustically depending on whether they occurred in response to a predator, or were given by males following copulations. The post-copulatory trills of males were individually distinctive. Among anti-predator trills there was no evidence of predator-specificity within the narrow range of predators tested: trills given to two species of (stuffed) weasels (Mustela), to dogs and to humans were statistically indistinguishable. Sonagrams of trills occurring in agonistic contexts suggest that a third general category of trills may exist, but agonistic trills were more variable than either anti-predator or post-copulatory trills. The ground squirrels also gave single-note calls in the three contexts described above, either repetitively (‘chirps’) or singly (‘whistles’). Neither chirps nor whistles encoded any obvious situation-specific information, except that whistles were typically associated with rapidly-moving predators, usually raptors. The post-copulatory chirps of males were individually distinctive. Vocalizations of Belding's ground squirrels may not vary among contexts as much as do the analogous calls of California ground squirrels (S. beecheyi). 相似文献

As well as killing pest insects, the rhizosphere competent insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii also boosts plant growth by providing nitrogenous nutrients and increasing resistance to plant pathogens. Plant roots secrete abundant nutrients but little is known about their utilization by Metarhizium spp. and the mechanistic basis of Metarhizium-plant associations. We report here that M. robertsii produces an extracellular invertase (MrInv) on plant roots. Deletion of MrInv (⊿MrInv) reduced M. robertsii growth on sucrose and rhizospheric exudates but increased colonization of Panicum virgatum and Arabidopsis thaliana roots. This could be accounted for by a reduction in carbon catabolite repression in ⊿MrInv increasing production of plant cell wall-degrading depolymerases. A non-rhizosphere competent scarab beetle specialist Metarhizium majus lacks invertase which suggests that rhizospheric competence may be related to the sugar metabolism of different Metarhizium species. 相似文献

Aim
Abiotic conditions are key components that determine the distribution of species. However, co‐occurring species can respond differently to the same factors, and determining which climate components are most predictive of geographic distributions is important for understanding community response to climate change. Here, we estimate and compare climate niches of ten subdominant, herbaceous forb species common in sagebrush steppe systems, asking how niches differ among co‐occurring species and whether more closely related species exhibit higher niche overlap.Location

We used herbarium records and ecological niche modelling to estimate area of occupancy, niche breadth and overlap, and describe characteristics of suitable climate. We compared mean values and variability in summer precipitation and minimum temperatures at occurrence locations among species, plant families, and growth forms, and related estimated phylogenetic distances to niche overlap.Results
Species varied in the size and spatial distribution of suitable climate and in niche breadth. Species also differed in the variables contributing to their suitable climate and in mean values, spatial variation and interannual variation in highly predictive climate variables. Only two of ten species shared comparable climate niches. We found family‐level differences associated with variation in summer precipitation and minimum temperatures, as well as in mean minimum temperatures. Growth forms differed in their association with variability in summer precipitation and minimum temperatures. We found no relationship between phylogenetic distance and niche overlap among our species.Main conclusions
We identified contrasting climate niches for ten Great Basin understorey forbs, including differences in both mean values and climate variability. These estimates can guide species selection for restoration by identifying species with a high tolerance for climate variability and large climatic niches. They can also help conservationists to understand which species may be least tolerant of climate variability, and potentially most vulnerable to climate change.48.

Using [(3)H]inulin uptake as a measure of pharyngeal pumping activity, we have investigated and compared the effects of glutamate, ivermectin, and moxidectin on inulin uptake in susceptible and ivermectin-selected Haemonchus contortus. Inulin uptake is inhibited by glutamate, ivermectin, and moxidectin, at biologically relevant concentrations. Glutamate influences the responses to both ivermectin and moxidectin, suggesting that these three substances share a common mechanism of action. The effects of ivermectin on inulin uptake, but not moxidectin, are significantly altered as a result of selection with ivermectin. These results suggest that ivermectin and moxidectin may differ, to some extent, in their mode of action responses or mechanisms of resistance. 相似文献

Mycelial colonies of filamentous fungi often deteriorate when maintained on artificial media, and this can take the form of sterile sectors. We previously established that sectorization by the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae correlates with intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study we demonstrate that: (1) H(2)O(2) increases rates of sectorization; (2) a stable strain of M. anisopliae eliminates intracellular ROS more rapidly than an unstable strain; (3) mitochondrial DNA from sectors undergoes a non-enzymatic glycation of deoxyguanosine that is not shown by genomic DNA; (4) the membrane potential of mitochondria in sector cells is decreased in comparison to wild type cells indicating loss of function; (5) DNA glycation changes the properties of DNA and (6) treating wild type mycelia with H(2)O(2) reproduced the glycation pattern shown in sectors. H(2)O(2) also reproduced the morphological changes in mitochondria and lipid droplets that occur in sector cells. Fungal sectorization thus displays aging related developmental impairments resulting from oxidative stress, suggesting a new research direction for studies on fungal colony deterioration. Mitochondrial DNA has a very high AT bias. We speculate that reducing the consequences of glycation could provide an adaptive reason for this. 相似文献
