The lactation experience of 55 mothers of 62 infants of low birth weight (2500 g or less) was prospectively compared with that of 55 mothers of 55 control infants (38 weeks'' gestation or more, birth weight more than 2500 g) born at the same institution. The incidence rates of lactation at delivery were 73% for the control group and 58% for the low-birth-weight group; 11% of the infants of low birth weight fed breast milk were never put to the breast. The mean age at first suckling was 277.3 hours in the low-birth-weight group, compared with 3.3 hours in the control group (p less than 0.0005). At first suckling 81% of the low-birth-weight infants and 25% of the control infants sucked poorly or refused the breast (p less than 0.001). At discharge 65% of the breast-milk-fed control infants were exclusively breast-fed, compared with 3% of the low-birth-weight infants fed breast milk (p less than 0.001). The incidence rates of lactation over time were similar in the control and low-birth-weight groups (51% v. 44% at 1 month, 29% v. 13% at 3 months, 13% v. 4% at 6 months and 4% v. 2% at 12 months). The mean duration of lactation was 3.2 months for the control group and 2.5 months for the low-birth-weight group. In the long term 37% of the low-birth-weight infants fed breast milk failed to breast-feed, compared with 2% of the control infants, and only 31% were exclusively breast-fed, compared with 85% of the control infants (p less than 0.001). However, the degree of satisfaction with the lactation experience was similar in the two groups. We conclude that mothers of low-birth-weight infants have good potential for lactation.  相似文献

In tropical regions, most primary ecosystems have been replaced by mosaic landscapes in which species must cope with a large shift in the distribution of their habitat and associated food resources. Primates are particularly vulnerable to habitat modifications. Most species persist in small fragments surrounded by complex human-mediated matrices whose structure and connectivity may strongly influence their dispersal and feeding behavior. Behavioral plasticity appears to be a crucial parameter governing the ability of organisms to exploit the resources offered by new matrix habitats and thus to persist in fragmented habitats. In this study, we were interested in the dietary plasticity of the golden-crowned sifaka (Propithecus tattersalli), an endangered species of lemur, found only in the Daraina region in north-eastern Madagascar. We used a DNA-based approach combining the barcoding concept and Illumina next-generation sequencing to (i) describe the species diet across its entire range and (ii) evaluate the influence of landscape heterogeneity on diet diversity and composition. Faeces from 96 individuals were sampled across the entire species range and their contents were analyzed using the trnL metabarcoding approach. In parallel, we built a large DNA reference database based on a checklist of the plant species of the Daraina region. Our results suggest that golden-crowned sifakas exhibit remarkable dietary diversity with at least 130 plant species belonging to 80 genera and 49 different families. We highlighted an influence of both habitat type and openness on diet composition suggesting a high flexibility of foraging strategies. Moreover, we observed the presence of numerous cultivated and naturalized plants in the faeces of groups living in forest edge areas. Overall, our findings support our initial expectation that P. tattersalli is able to cope with the current level of alteration of the landscape and confirm our previous results on the distribution and the dispersal ability of this species.  相似文献

Femtosecond spectroscopy was performed on CO-liganded (fully reduced and mixed-valence states) and O(2)-liganded quinol oxidase bd from Escherichia coli. Substantial polarization effects, unprecedented for optical studies of heme proteins, were observed in the CO photodissociation spectra, implying interactions between heme d (the chlorin ligand binding site) and the close-lying heme b(595) on the picosecond time scale; this general result is fully consistent with previous work [Vos, M. H., Borisov, V. B., Liebl, U., Martin, J.-L., and Konstantinov, A. A. (2000) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 97, 1554-1559]. Analysis of the data obtained under isotropic and anisotropic polarization conditions and additional flash photolysis nanosecond experiments on a mutant of cytochrome bd mostly lacking heme b(595) allow to attribute the features in the well-known but unusual CO dissociation spectrum of cytochrome bd to individual heme d and heme b(595) transitions. This renders it possible to compare the spectra of CO dissociation from reduced and mixed-valence cytochrome bd under static conditions and on a picosecond time scale in much more detail than previously possible. CO binding/dissociation from heme d is shown to perturb ferrous heme b(595), causing induction/loss of an absorption band centered at 435 nm. In addition, the CO photodissociation-induced absorption changes at 50 ps reveal a bathochromic shift of ferrous heme b(595) relative to the static spectrum. No evidence for transient binding of CO to heme b(595) after dissociation from heme d is found in the picosecond time range. The yield of CO photodissociation from heme d on a time scale of < 15 ps is found to be diminished more than 3-fold when heme b(595) is oxidized rather than reduced. In contrast to other known heme proteins, molecular oxygen cannot be photodissociated from the mixed-valence cytochrome bd at all, indicating a unique structural and electronic configuration of the diheme active site in the enzyme.  相似文献

The ecology of the young stages of allis shad Alosa alosa is poorly documented, although they can be exposed to many pressures during their freshwater phase and their downstream migration. When passing through systems such as the Gironde-Garonne-Dordogne watershed (GGD, SW France), they can be subjected to high temperatures and low levels of oxygen (hypoxia). The aim of this work is to assess the tolerance of young Alosa alosa at four ages (c. 10, 30, 60 and 85 days old) by challenging them to different temperatures (18, 22, 26 and 28°C) together with decreasing oxygen saturation levels (from 100% to 30%). Survival of the 10-day-old individuals was not influenced by oxy-thermic conditions, but high stress levels were detected and perhaps this age class was too fragile regarding the constraint of the experimental design. Survival at 30 and at 60 days old was negatively influenced by the highest temperatures tested alone (from 26°C and from 28°C, respectively) but no effect was detected at 85 days old up to 28°C. A combined effect of temperature and oxygen level was highlighted, with heat accelerating survival decrease when associated with oxygen level depletion: essentially, survival was critical (<50%) at 30 days old at temperature ≥22°C together with 30% O2; at 60 days old, at temperature = 28°C with 30% O2; at 85 days old, at temperature ≥26°C with ≤40% O2. Tolerance to oxy-thermic pressures appeared to be greater among the migratory ages (60 and 85 days old) than among the 30-day-old group. Based on environmental data recorded in the GGD system and on our experimental results, an exploratory analysis allowed a discussion of the possible impact of past oxy-thermic conditions on the local population dynamics between 2005 and 2018. The oxy-thermic conditions that may affect Alosa alosa at ages when they migrate downstream (60 and 85 days old) were not frequently recorded in this period, except in cases of extreme episodes of heat together with hypoxia that occurred in some years, in summertime in the turbidity maximum zone of the Gironde estuary (particularly in the year 2006). Interestingly, oxy-thermic conditions that are likely to threaten the 30-day-old individuals occurred more frequently in the lower freshwater parts of the GGD system between the years 2005 and 2018. In the context of climate change, a general increase in temperature is predicted, as well as more frequent and severe hypoxic events, therefore we suggest that local Alosa alosa population recruitment could encounter critical oxy-thermic conditions more frequently in the future if no adaptive management of water resources occurs.  相似文献

Most estimates of regional and global soil carbon stocks are based on extrapolations of mean soil C contents for broad categories of soil or vegetation types. Uncertainties exist in both the estimates of mean soil C contents and the area over which each mean should be extrapolated. Geographic information systems now permit spatially referenced estimates of soil C at finer scales of resolution than were previously practical. We compared estimates of total soil C stocks of the state of Maine using three methods: (1) multiplying the area of the state by published means of soil C for temperate forests and for Spodosols; (2) calculating areas of inclusions of soil taxa in the 1:5,000,000 FAO/UNESCO Soils Map of the World and multiplying those areas by selected mean carbon contents; and (3) calculating soil C for each soil series and map unit in the 1:250,000 State Soil Geographic Data Base (STATSGO) and summing these estimates for the entire state. The STATSGO estimate of total soil C was between 23% and 49% higher than the common coarse scale extrapolations, primarily because STATSGO included data on Histosols, which cover less than 5% of the area of the state, but which constitute over one-third of the soil C. Spodosols cover about 65% of the state, but contribute less than 39% of the soil C. Estimates of total soil C in Maine based on the FAO map agreed within 8% of the STATSGO estimate for one possible matching of FAO soil taxa with data on soil C, but another plausible matching overestimated soil C stocks. We also compared estimates from the 1:250,000 STATSGO database and from the 1:20,000 Soil Survey Geographic Data Base (SSURGO) for a 7.5 minute quadrangle within the state. SSURGO indicated 13% less total soil C than did STATSGO, largely because the attribute data on depths of soil horizons in SSURGO are more specific for this locality. Despite localized differences, the STATSGO database offers promise of scaling up county soil survey data to regional scales because it includes attribute data and estimates of areal coverage of C-rich inclusions within map units. The spatially referenced data also permit examination of covariation of soil C stocks with soil properties thought to affect stabilization of soil C. Clay content was a poor predictor of soil C in Maine, but drainage class covaried significantly with soil C across the state.  相似文献

This study examines the extent to which the predicted CO2‐protective effects on the inhibition of growth, impairment of photosynthesis and nutrient imbalance caused by saline stress are mediated by an effective adaptation of the endogenous plant hormonal balance. Therefore, sweet pepper plants (Capsicum annuum, cv. Ciclón) were grown at ambient or elevated [CO2] (400 or 800 µmol mol–1) with a nutrient solution containing 0 or 80 mM NaCl. The results show that, under saline conditions, elevated [CO2] increased plant dry weight, leaf area, leaf relative water content and net photosynthesis compared with ambient [CO2], whilst the maximum potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II was not modified. In salt‐stressed plants, elevated [CO2] increased leaf NO3 concentration and reduced Cl concentration. Salinity stress induced ABA accumulation in the leaves but it was reduced in the roots at high [CO2], being correlated with the stomatal response. Under non‐stressed conditions, IAA was dramatically reduced in the roots when high [CO2] was applied, which resulted in greater root DW and root respiration. Additionally, the observed high CK concentration in the roots (especially tZR) could prevent downregulation of photosynthesis at high [CO2], as the N level in the leaves was increased compared with the ambient [CO2], under salt‐stress conditions. These results demonstrate that the hormonal balance was altered by the [CO2], which resulted in significant changes at the growth, gas exchange and nutritional levels.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to characterize the muscle architecture of children and adults using magnetic resonance elastography and ultrasound techniques. Five children (8-12 yr) and seven adults (24-58 yr) underwent both tests on the vastus medialis muscle at relaxed and contracted (10% and 20% of MVC) states. Longitudinal ultrasonic images were performed in the same area as the phase image showing the shear wave's propagation. Two geometrical parameters were defined: the wave angle (α(_MRE)) corresponding to the shear wave propagation and the fascicule angle (α(_US)) tracking the path of fascicles. Moreover, shear modulus was measured at different localizations within the muscle and in the subcutaneous adipose tissue. The association of both techniques demonstrates that the shear wave propagation follows the muscle fascicles path, reflecting the internal muscle architecture. At rest, ultrasound images revealed waves propagating parallel to the children fascicle while adults showed oblique waves corresponding to already oriented (α(_US)=15.4±2.54°) muscle fascicles. In contraction, the waves' propagation were in an oblique direction for children (α(_US_10%MVC)=10.6±2.27°, α(_US_20%MVC)=10.2±2.29°) as well as adults (α(_US_10%MVC)=15.4±2.54°, α(_US_20%MVC)=17.2±2.44°). A stiffness variation (1 kPa) was found between the upper and lower parts of the adult VM muscle and a lower stiffness (1.85±0.17 kPa) was measured in the subcutaneous adipose tissue. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the MRE technique to provide geometrical insights from the children and adults muscles and to characterize different physiological media.  相似文献
