This study investigates the effect of water temperature on the development rate of eggs and larvae, the duration of the endogenous feeding period and its consequences for recruitment of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) in Dutch lakes IJsselmeer and Markermeer. This study measured temperature-dependent egg and larval development rates as well as mortality rates from fertilization till the moment of absorption of the yolk-sac and from yolk-sac depletion onwards in temperature-controlled indoor experiments. Using multinomial modelling the authors found significant differences in development time of egg development stages under different temperature regimes. Based on historic water temperatures, the model predicted that the larval endogenous feeding period has advanced at a rate of about 2.9 days per decade in a more than 50 year period since 1961, yet there was no change in the duration of the endogenous feeding period. As zooplankton is more responsive to daylight than water temperature cues, a mismatch between the peak of the onset of exogenous feeding of smelt and the peak of zooplankton blooms could lead to high mortality and therefore low recruitment of smelt. Such a mismatch might contribute to a decline in the smelt population in Lake IJsselmeer and Lake Markermeer.  相似文献

This paper describes the distribution of aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC), using both L-DOPA and L-5-hydroxytryptophan (L-5-HTP) as substrates, in serum of various animals. The ratio of the activities of the enzyme towards both substrates was also determined in the same serum. AADC activity was discovered in serum using our new and highly sensitive assay for AADC activity by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection (ED) with L-DOPA and L-5-HTP as substrates. It was found that among the species used, guinea pig serum had the highest activity, and we made a systematic study on guinea pig serum AADC.  相似文献

“Campus Conservation Nationals” (CCN) is a recurring, nation-wide electricity and water-use reduction competition among dormitories on college campuses. We conducted a two year empirical study of the competition’s effects on resource consumption and the relationship between conservation, use of web technology and various psychological measures. Significant reductions in electricity and water use occurred during the two CCN competitions examined (n = 105,000 and 197,000 participating dorm residents respectively). In 2010, overall reductions during the competition were 4% for electricity and 6% for water. The top 10% of dorms achieved 28% and 36% reductions in electricity and water respectively. Participation was larger in 2012 and reductions were slightly smaller (i.e. 3% electricity). The fact that no seasonal pattern in electricity use was evident during non-competition periods suggests that results are attributable to the competition. Post competition resource use data collected in 2012 indicates that conservation behavior was sustained beyond the competition. Surveys were used to assess psychological and behavioral responses (n = 2,900 and 2,600 in 2010 and 2012 respectively). Electricity reductions were significantly correlated with: web visitation, specific conservation behaviors, awareness of the competition, motivation and sense of empowerment. However, participants were significantly more motivated than empowered. Perceived benefits of conservation were skewed towards global and future concerns while perceived barriers tended to be local. Results also suggest that competitions may be useful for “preaching beyond the choir”–engaging those who might lack prior intrinsic or political motivation. Although college life is distinct, certain conclusions related to competitions, self-efficacy, and motivation and social norms likely extend to other residential settings.  相似文献

Specific genetic variations in the gene for the selenium-containing antioxidant protein glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) are associated with the risk of a variety of common diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders. Two common variations have been focused upon, one resulting in leucine or proline at codon 198 and another resulting in 5, 6, or 7 alanine repeats were previously shown to affect the distribution of GPX1 between the cytoplasm and mitochondria. Human MCF7 cells engineered to exclusively express GPX1 with five alanine repeats at amino terminus and proline at codon 198 (A5P) and seven alanine repeats at amino terminus and leucine at codon 198 (A7L), as well as derivatives targeted to the mitochondria by the addition of a mitochondrial localization sequence (mA5P and mA7L) were used to assess the consequences of the expression of these proteins on the cellular redox state and bioenergetics. Ectopic expression of A5P and A7L reduced the levels of reactive oxygen species, and the mitochondrially targeted derivatives exhibited better activity in these assays. Bioenergetics and mitochondrial integrity were assessed by measuring mitochondrial membrane potential, oxygen consumption, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, and the levels of lactate dehydrogenase. The results of these assays indicated distinctively, and sometimes opposing, patterns with regard to differences between the consequences of the expression of A5P, A7L, mA5P, and mA7L. These data provide new information on the consequences of differences in the primary structure and cellular location of GPX1 proteins and contribute to the understanding of how these effects might contribute to human disease.  相似文献

In this paper, a numerical method for the solution of a strongly coupled reaction-diffusion system, with suitable initial and Neumann boundary conditions, by using cubic B-spline collocation scheme on a uniform grid is presented. The scheme is based on the usual finite difference scheme to discretize the time derivative while cubic B-spline is used as an interpolation function in the space dimension. The scheme is shown to be unconditionally stable using the von Neumann method. The accuracy of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by applying it on a test problem. The performance of this scheme is shown by computing and error norms for different time levels. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with known exact solutions.  相似文献
