Ground vegetation may act as a sink for nutrients after clear-cutting and thus decrease leaching losses. Biomass and nutrient (N, P, K, Ca) pools of ground vegetation (mosses, roots and above-ground parts of field layer) were determined one year before and five years after clear-cutting of a Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) dominated boreal mixed forest stand in eastern Finland (63°51′ N, 28°58′ E). Before clear-cutting the average biomass of ground vegetation was 5307 kg ha−1, with nutrient contents of 46.9 kg N ha−11, 4.1 kg P ha−11, 16.2 kg K ha−11 and 13.9 kg Ca ha−11. The biomass and nutrient pools decreased after clear-cutting being lowest in the second year, the biomass decreasing by 46–65% in the cut plots. The nutrient pools decreased as follows: N 54–72%, P 36–68%, K 51–71% and Ca 57–74%. The decrease in ground vegetation nutrient uptake, and the observed reduced depth of rooting may decrease nutrient retention after clear-cutting and decomposing dead ground vegetation is a potential source of leached nutrients. These negative effects of clear-cutting on the nutrient binding capacity of ground vegetation was short-lived since the total biomass and nutrient pools returned to pre-cutting levels or were even greater by the end of the 5-year study period.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Occult thyroid malignancies presenting with secondary neck masses as the first clinical manifestation is well known. Although rare, medullary carcinoma serves a potential source for lymph node metastases. The characteristic cytomorphology of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) should clinch the diagnosis. Further, fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the ultrasonography-detected occult nodules in thyroid serves as a useful preoperative diagnostic tool. CASE: A 22-year-old man presented with left-sided neck masses of 1 year duration. FNAC smears of the neck masses revealed cytomorphology characteristic of MTC. Ultrasonography of the thyroid led to ruling out the presence of an occult nodule and detected an 8-mm nodule in the left thyroid lobe. Ultrasound-guided FNAC of the nodule showed features similar to those with FNAC of the neck masses. Surgical resection of thyroid and neck masses further confirmed the diagnosis of a primary occult MTC with lymph node metastases. CONCLUSION: FNAC smears of lymph node masses showing the distinct cytomorphology of MTC should prompt suspicion for occult primary in thyroid. Ultrasound-guided FNAC of these occult nodules, if detected, further serves a diagnostic tool for accurate preoperative diagnosis when metastasis presents as the first clinical manifestation of an occult primary.  相似文献

Fertile transgenic barley by particle bombardment of immature embryos   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Transgenic, fertile barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) from the Finnish elite cultivar Kymppi was obtained by particle bombardment of immature embryos. Immature embryos were bombarded to the embryonic axis side and grown to plants without selection. Neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPTII) activity was screened in small plantlets. One out of a total of 227 plants expressed the transferred nptII gene. This plant has until now produced 98 fertile spikes (T0), and four of the 90 T0 spikes analyzed to date contained the nptII gene. These shoots were further analyzed and they expressed the transferred gene. From green grains, embryos were isolated and grown to plantlets (T1). The four transgenic shoots of Toivo (the T0 plant) produced 25 plantlets as T1 progeny. Altogether fifteen of these T1 plants carried the transferred nptII gene as detected with the PCR technique, fourteen of which expressed the nptII gene. The integration and inheritance of the transferred nptII gene was confirmed by Southern blot hybridization. Although present as several copies, the transferred gene was inherited as a single Mendelian locus into the T2 progeny.  相似文献

Although high-density SNP genotyping platforms generate a momentum for detailed genome-wide association (GWA) studies, an offshoot is a new insight into population genetics. Here, we present an example in one of the best-known founder populations by scrutinizing ten distinct Finnish early- and late-settlement subpopulations. By determining genetic distances, homozygosity, and patterns of linkage disequilibrium, we demonstrate that population substructure, and even individual ancestry, is detectable at a very high resolution and supports the concept of multiple historical bottlenecks resulting from consecutive founder effects. Given that genetic studies are currently aiming at identifying smaller and smaller genetic effects, recognizing and controlling for population substructure even at this fine level becomes imperative to avoid confounding and spurious associations. This study provides an example of the power of GWA data sets to demonstrate stratification caused by population history even within a seemingly homogeneous population, like the Finns. Further, the results provide interesting lessons concerning the impact of population history on the genome landscape of humans, as well as approaches to identify rare variants enriched in these subpopulations.  相似文献

Abatract The effect of carbon and nitrogen sources on two well-established hairy root clones, LBA1S and C58A, of Hyoscyamus muticus strain Cairo, were investigated. Both clones exhibited completely different patterns with regards to their growth rate, hyoscyamine accumulation, and fatty acid contents. Clone C58A grew faster and yielded more biomass (17.4 g l-1, in 21 days), but produced less hyoscyamine. The maximum hyoscyamine content (120 mg l-1) in clone LBA1S was reached in 28 days. Neither of the clones could use lactose or fructose as the sole carbon source, nor ammonium as the sole nitrogen source. The growth in the medium containing glucose was significantly reduced compared to that containing sucrose. Clone LBA1S was sensitive to the changes in sucrose concentration and an increase in ammonium in the culture medium, whereas C58A tolerated these changes better but was more sensitive to the increase in total nitrogen. Lipid synthesis was active in the exponential growth phase, and the total fatty acid content varied from 5 to 34 mg g-1 of dry root material. The major fatty acids were linoleic, palmitic and linolenic. Many insects survive adverse periods in seasonal environments by entering diapause, a deep resting stage, during which energy consumption is typically low and gas exchange is in the form of a discontinuous gas exchange cycle (DGC). Because insects in high‐latitude environments are severely time constrained during summer, an effective diapause termination with careful regulation of metabolic rate is important. The present study examines whether diapausing Colorado potato beetles Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say originating from three latitudinally different regions in Europe differ in their quantitative or qualitative gas exchange patterns in response to an increasing temperature. Overall production of gaseous CO2, as well as qualitative patterns relating to the DGC, are measured at a late stage of diapause at four different temperatures in increasing order from 13, 18, 23 to 28 °C. Overall CO2 production is found to be lower in the two northern populations (61°49′N and 55°75′N) compared with the southernmost population (45°48′N) but increases as a function of temperature in all populations in a similar way. However, in the northern populations, raising the temperature increases the amount of CO2 discharged during single DGC peaks, whereas the DGC frequency remains relatively unchanged. By contrast, in the southernmost population, the amount of CO2 discharged during individual DGC peaks remains relatively unchanged, whereas the DGC frequency increases as a function of temperature. The observed differences may relate to water retention benefits or, alternatively, energetic benefits relating to heightened gas exchange efficiency in hypoxic or hypercapnic environments. Overall, the results suggest that, although populations of L. decemlineata may have similar thermal sensitivities, they have different qualitative strategies to regulate metabolic re‐activation at diapause termination.  相似文献
