We analyzed the impact of interspecific interactions between two ecologically and morphologically distinct Puerto Rican lizards,
Anolis gundlachi and A. evermanni, in an experimental design consisting of six 20 × 20 m plots divided into three blocks, each consisting of a pair of experimental
and control plots. We removed A. gundlachi from experimental plots and monitored the response of A. evermanni. The reduction in the number of A. gundlachi resulted in a significant increase in the abundance of both adult and juvenile A. evermanni. We found no evidence for a shift in structural habitat use in A. evermanni in experimental plots. Two possible mechanisms, interspecific competition and intraguild predation, could explain the increase
in abundance of A. evermanni after the removal of A. gundlachi. These results make clear that interactions still occur between A. gundlachi and A. evermanni even given their morphological and ecological differences.

Regenerating forests make up an increasingly large portion of tropical landscapes worldwide and regeneration dynamics may be influenced by leaf-cutting ants (LCA), which proliferate in disturbed areas and collect seeds for fungus culturing. Here, we investigate how LCA influences seed fate in human-modified areas of Caatinga dry forest. We evaluate the seed deposition and predation on Atta opaciceps nests, foraging habitat surrounding nest and control habitat away of nest influence of 15 colonies located along a forest cover gradient during the rainy and dry seasons. For each habitat, four 50-cm2 plots were established and all seeds on the soil surface were collected along 1 year. We recorded 13,628 seeds distributed among 47 species and 36.57% of the total seeds did not show any sign of predation. Nest mound habitats supported low-density and species-poor seed assemblages, which were taxonomically distinct from the control habitats. These effects only occurred in the rainy season. The proportion of undamaged seeds were similar across the habitats. While forest cover did not influence seed assemblage in terms of species richness or seed predation, it did interact with habitat type via increments in seed abundance as forest cover increased across the nests. Forest cover also affected seed composition, but only in the rainy season. These results indicate that LCA decrease seed deposition in areas under their influence, particularly on the nest mounds. As LCA profit from human disturbance in the Caatinga, their role as seed ‘sinks’ should be enhanced in disturbed Caatinga patches, particularly during the rainy season, when most of the plant recruitment occurs. Our findings reinforce the importance of LCA as drivers of forest dynamics and resilience in human-modified landscapes. 相似文献

An outbreak of coccidioidomycosis is described that involved three individuals and eight of their dogs, who had engaged in a successful hunt for nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) in the environs of Oeiras, a community in Brazil's north eastern state of Piauí.Diagnosis was based on clinical, serological and cultural findings. Four of 24 soil samples collected in and around the burrow of an armadillo yielded cultures of Coccidioides immitis, thus establishing the endemicity of that mould in the state of Piauí. A literature review revealed that C. immitis, aside from that state, is endemic in three other Brazilian states — Bahia, Ceará and Maranhão. These four contiguous states have semi-arid regions where climatic conditions and their flora are similar to those that exist in C. immitis's endemic regions in North, Central and South America.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献

Larvae of Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) often infest soybean crops, Glycine max (L.) (Fabaceae), causing significant yield losses in important soybean-producing regions. The use of soybean varieties resistant to lepidopteran larvae is a major approach in soybean integrated pest management. However, standardization and optimization of bioassays that are used to screen genotypes for insect resistance are essential for high-throughput phenotyping. Methodologies for screening were assessed to determine the most effective method for discriminating levels of antixenosis to H. virescens in soybean plants. Feeding and oviposition preference assays were performed to determine optimal densities of larvae and adults, and optimal plant structures and growth stages for conducting assays. In addition, trichome densities, and fiber and lignin contents were quantified in plant structures of soybean cultivars differing in resistance. Resistance levels of cultivars were best differentiated using nine neonate larvae and two 6-day-old larvae, and by using young leaves of plants at the vegetative stage. This was likely due to the more pronounced differences in lignin and fiber contents in young leaves of vegetative-stage plants. Density of adult pairs, plant structure, and growth stage did not affect ability to distinguish differences in oviposition preference by H. virescens. Higher numbers of eggs were found on the leaves, which were the plant structures that exhibited the lowest trichome densities. The protocol developed in this work will benefit future evaluations of soybean genotypes for antixenosis against H. virescens. 相似文献

Treatment with 5 x 10(-6) M dexamethasone stimulated insulin binding in human promonocytic U-937 cells. When curvilinear Scatchard plots were examined according to the one-site model, only changes in affinity, but not in receptor numbers, were observed. However, when the two-site model was applied, an increase in both the affinity and the number of the high affinity-low capacity sites was observed, with maximum values at 15 h. By contrast, the low affinity-high capacity sites did not undergo significant alterations. Northern blot assays revealed two insulin receptor-related mRNAs of approximately 11 and 7 kb in size. Dexamethasone increased the levels of these RNAs, following similar kinetics to those of high affinity receptor expression. This suggests that the 11 and 7 kb species carry information for high affinity insulin receptors, and that in U-937 cells the expression of this receptor subclass is primarily regulated at the mRNA level. 相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of the association between obesity and chronic stress on the temporal pattern of serum levels of biochemical and hormonal markers. Obesity model was achieved by hypercaloric diet exposure. Wistar rats were divided into four groups: standard chow (C), hypercaloric diet (HD), stress + standard chow (S), and stress + hypercaloric diet (SHD) and analysed at three time points: ZT0, ZT12 and ZT18. Chronic stress was performed 1 h/per day, 5 days/per week, during 80 days. The presence of temporal pattern in naïve animals’ insulin release was accomplished. Hypercaloric diet induced obesity, increasing rats’ insulin and glucose levels; while chronic stress reduced insulin levels. There were interactions between chronic stress and obesity in serum insulin and glucose levels; and between time points and obesity in insulin levels. In conclusion, long exposure to hypercaloric diet and chronic stress were able to desynchronize temporal pattern of insulin release, contributing to the pathophysiology of obesity and its complications. 相似文献
