Uptake and translocation of the elemental markers rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs) within adult soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry in the laboratory in various feeding and mating treatments. Neonates were tested to determine marker transfer from male and female adults fed rubidium chloride (RbCl)-treated artificial nectar, cesium chloride (CsCI)-treated artificial nectar, or both. All females contained detectable levels of Rb, Cs, or both, which were obtained either through direct feeding or via spermatophores. Rubidium was present in females at significantly greater levels than Cs. No significant differences in Rb levels were observed between feeding or spermatophore acquisitions. Most neonates had significantly higher levels of Rb than Cs. In a field cage study to evaluate adult feeding and oviposition behavior on blooming cotton and blooming soybean treated with RbCl and CsCl, respectively, more eggs contained Rb than Cs, indicating greater feeding on cotton nectar than soybean nectar, regardless of the host plant upon which eggs were laid. Females laid more eggs on blooming soybean than on blooming cotton. Higher levels of Rb in cotton than Cs in soybean were recorded and may be attributed to initial elemental marker quantities available to the insects. Soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), oviposition in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., and soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., of various stages of plant phenological development was evaluated in field cages in 1994, 1995, and 1996. Overall, females preferred to oviposit on soybean over cotton when both crops were compared in vegetative or prebloom stages, when both crops were blooming, and when soybean was blooming or in early pod stage compared with prebloom cotton. Females preferred to deposit eggs on the lower leaf surface in the upper two-thirds of the plant canopy in cotton and soybean. Oviposition in upper and middle canopy levels varied with plant growth stage. Females tended to lay more eggs in the upper canopy compared with the middle canopy in prebloom cotton and vegetative soybean; more eggs were laid in the middle canopy of blooming cotton and reproductive stages of soybean. Females responded to both cotton and soybean volatiles in an olfactometer. There was no significant difference in response to the two sources of volatiles. 相似文献

I have met and worked with many distinguished scientists, including other Past-Presidents of the Society. I also became an active participant in the Society of Protozoologists. Natural transmission of the epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) was conducted on na?ve snakeheads Ophicephalus striatus (also known as Channa striata) kept (A) in aquifer water, (B) in lakewater, (C) cohabiting with EUS snakeheads in lakewater, and (D) cohabiting with apparently healthy snakeheads in lakewater during the 1994 to 1995 EUS season. The results showed that EUS-like lesions developed in 6 to 14 d among na?ve snakeheads cohabiting with EUS snakeheads and with apparently healthy snakeheads in lakewater (Treatments C and D). Among na?ve fish exposed to lakewater (Treatment B), similar lesions developed in 16 to 21 d, while na?ve fish in aquifer water (Treatment A) did not develop EUS-like lesions. EUS signs began as Grade I (slight) lesions that gradually progressed to Grades III-IV (severe) 3 to 5 d from lesion onset, similar to the naturally affected EUS fish. The virus was recovered from some but not all naturally EUS-affected snakeheads, snakeheads with healing lesions and apparently healthy snakeheads, but not from na?ve snakeheads. The results provide evidence of a waterborne horizontal transmission of the EUS-associated virus. This is the first report of a successful horizontal transmission of the EUS-associated virus from apparently healthy snakeheads to na?ve fish under natural conditions and of virus recovery in tissue culture from naturally exposed experimental fish. 相似文献

The physiological role of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and of specific NPY receptors in regulating the intestinal peristaltic reflex was examined in three-compartment flat-sheet preparations of rat colon. Graded muscle stretch or mucosal stimulation applied to the central compartment inhibited NPY release in the orad compartment where ascending contraction was measured. NPY and the Y1-receptor agonist [Leu31, Pro34]NPY inhibited, whereas the selective Y1-receptor antagonist BIBP 3226 augmented ascending contraction and substance P (SP) release in the orad compartment induced by muscle stretch or mucosal stimulation. Neither agonist nor antagonist had any effect on descending relaxation or VIP release in the caudad compartment. The Y2-receptor agonist NPY13-36 and antagonist BIIE 0246 had no effect on peptide release or mechanical response. The results indicate that suppression of a tonic inhibitory influence of NPY neurons on excitatory neurotransmitter release contributes substantially to the orad contractile phase of the peristaltic reflex. The effect of NPY on neurotransmitter release is mediated by Y1 receptors. 相似文献

Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells express three defined potassium-specific transport systems en-coded by TRK1, TRK2 and TOK1. To gain a more complete understanding of the physiological function of these transport proteins, we have constructed a set of isogenic yeast strains carrying all combinations of trk1delta, trk2delta and tok1delta null mutations. The in vivo K+ transport characteristics of each strain have been documented using growth-based assays, and the in vitro biochemical and electrophysiological properties associated with K+ transport have been determined. As has been reported previously, Trk1p and Trk2p facilitate high-affinity potassium uptake and appear to be functionally redundant under a wide range of environmental conditions. In the absence of TRK1 and TRK2, strains lack the ability specifically to take up K+, and trk1deltatrk2delta double mutant cells depend upon poorly understood non-specific cation uptake mechanisms for growth. Under conditions that impair the activity of the non-specific uptake system, termed NSC1, we have found that the presence of functional Tok1p renders cells sensitive to Cs+. Based on this finding, we have established a growth-based assay that monitors the in vivo activity of Tok1p. 相似文献
