An overview of models of stomatal conductance at the leaf level   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Stomata play a key role in plant adaptation to changing environmental conditions as they control both water losses and CO2 uptake. Particularly, in the context of global change, simulations of the consequences of drought on crop plants are needed to design more efficient and water‐saving cropping systems. However, most of the models of stomatal conductance (gs) developed at the leaf level link gs to environmental factors or net photosynthesis (Anet), but do not include satisfactorily the effects of drought, impairing our capacity to simulate plant functioning in conditions of limited water supply. The objective of this review was to draw an up‐to‐date picture of the gs models, from the empirical to the process‐based ones, along with their mechanistic or deterministic bases. It focuses on models capable to account for multiple environmental influences with emphasis on drought conditions. We examine how models that have been proposed for well‐watered conditions can be combined with those specifically designed to deal with drought conditions. Ideas for future improvements of gs models are discussed: the issue of co‐regulation of gs and Anet; the roles of CO2, absissic acid and H2O2; and finally, how to better address the new challenges arising from the issue of global change.  相似文献

Juvenile salmonid fish readily form dominance hierarchies when faced with limited resources. While these social interactions may result in profound behavioural and physiological stress, it is unknown if this social stress is evident at the level of the cellular stress response—specifically, the induction of stress or heat shock proteins (Hsps). Thus, the goal of our study was to determine if Hsps are induced during hierarchy formation in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). To this end, we measured levels of three Hsps, Hsp70, Hsc (heat shock cognate)70 and Hsp90 in the white muscle, liver and brain of trout that had been interacting for 36 h, 72 h or 6 days. Our data indicate that Hsps are induced in both dominant and subordinate fish in a time- and tissue-specific manner. In further mechanistic experiments on fasted and cortisol-treated fish, we demonstrated that high plasma cortisol does not affect Hsp induction in trout white muscle or liver, but both conditions may be part of the mechanism for Hsp induction with social stress in the brain. We conclude that the behavioural and physiological stress experienced by juvenile rainbow trout in dominance hierarchies can be extended to the induction of Hsps.  相似文献

Although familial Alzheimer disease (AD)-associated autosomal dominant mutants have been extensively studied, little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration induced by these mutants in AD. Wild-type, Swedish or London amyloid precursor protein (APP) transfection in primary human neurons induced neuritic beading, in which several co-expressed proteins, such as enhanced green fluorescent protein, red fluorescent protein (RFP)-tau and RFP-ubiquitin, accumulated. APP-induced neuritic beading was dependent on caspase-6 (Casp6), because it was inhibited with 5 μM z-VEID-fmk or with dominant-negative Casp6. Neuritic beading was independent from APP-mediated amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) production, because the APPM596V (APPMV) mutant, which cannot generate Aβ, still induced Casp6-dependent neuritic beading. However, the beaded neurons underwent Casp6- and Aβ-dependent cell death. These results indicate that overexpression of wild-type or mutant APP causes Casp6-dependent but Aβ-independent neuritic degeneration in human neurons. Because Casp6 is activated early in AD and is involved in axonal degeneration, these results suggest that the inhibition of Casp6 may represent an efficient early intervention against familial forms of AD. Furthermore, these results indicate that removing Aβ without inhibiting Casp6 may have little effect in preventing the progressive dementia associated with sporadic or familial AD.  相似文献

The cell shape and morphology of plant tissues are intimately related to structural modifications in the primary cell wall that are associated with key processes in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. The primary cell wall is composed mainly of cellulose immersed in a matrix of hemicellulose, pectin, lignin and some structural proteins. Intrauterine pressure was measured in 4 reproductively normal mares and 4 mares with delay in uterine clearance after administration of oxytocin to determine if intrauterine pressure varied between dosage and group. Changes in intrauterine pressure were measured during estrus, when a follicle was > or =35 mm, using a Millar "Mikro-tip" catheter that had 3 discrete pressure sensors/channels. Mares received 4 different treatments of 10, 5, 2.5 or 0 IU (vehicle) of oxytocin. The protocol for each treatment consisted of a 10-min baseline recording, administration of treatment and measurement of changes in intrauterine pressure for 65 min. After administration of the first two treatments, mares were rested for 2 h and the protocol repeated for the remaining 2 treatments. Changes in intrauterine pressure were measured on a physiograph and stored in a computer. The results were analyzed by 4x4 Latin Square Design analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the GLM procedure of the Statistical Analysis System. The ANOVA detected a main effect of treatment (P<0.01) and mare (nested within group; P<0.01) but no effect of channels, group or treatment-by-group interaction. There was a dose-dependent increase in uterine activity in both normal mares and those with delayed uterine clearance. A dose of 10 IU of oxytocin induced a larger number of uterine contractions (5.67+/-0.06) for a longer time (24.09+/-1.18 min) than the 5 IU (4.16+/-0.06 contractions and 16.31+/-1.18; P<0.01 min) or 2.5 IU dose (4.08+/-0.06 contractions and 17.61+/-1.18 min). The first intrauterine wave occurred most often near the tip of the horn in 10 of 12 recordings in normal mares and in 8 of 12 recordings in mares with delayed uterine clearance. It was then propagated from the middle of the horn to the uterine body just cranial to the cervix. There was no pattern of propagation for subsequent intrauterine pressure waves. We conclude that the difference in spontaneous clearance of the uterus between the 2 groups is not reflected in their response to exogenous oxytocin as determined by changes in intrauterine pressure.  相似文献

A wide interest in amyloid precursor protein (APP) metabolism stems from the fact that increased amounts of amyloid beta peptide (Abeta), arising through proteolytic processing of APP, likely play a significant role in Alzheimer's disease. As Alzheimer's disease pathology is limited almost exclusively to the human species, we established human primary neuron cultures to address the possibility of distinctive APP processing in human CNS neurons. In the present study, we investigate the role of organelles and protein trafficking in APP metabolism. Using brefeldin A, we failed to detect APP processing into Abeta in the endoplasmic reticulum. Monensin and the lysomotropic agents, NH4Cl and chloroquine, revealed a bypass pH-dependent secretory pathway in a compartment between the endoplasmic reticulum and the medial Golgi, resulting in the secretion of full-length APP. Colchicine treatment resulting in the loss of neurites inhibited processing of APP through the secretory, but not the endosomal-lysosomal, pathway of APP metabolism. The serine protease inhibitor, leupeptin, indicates a role for lysosomes in APP, Abeta, and APP C-terminal fragment turnover. These results demonstrate that the regulation of APP metabolism in human neurons differs considerably from those reported in rodent CNS primary neuron cultures or continuously dividing cell types.  相似文献

We develop a method for constructing adaptive regression spline models for the exploration of survival data. The method combines Cox's (1972, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B 34, 187-200) regression model with a weighted least-squares version of the multivariate adaptive regressi on spline (MARS) technique of Friedman (1991, Annals of Statistics 19, 1-141) to adaptively select the knots and covariates. The new technique can automatically fit models with terms that represent nonlinear effects and interactions among covariates. Applications based on simulated data and data from a clinical trial for myeloma are presented. Results from the myeloma application identified several important prognostic variables, including a possible nonmonotone relationship with survival in one laboratory variable. Results are compared to those from the adaptive hazard regression (HARE) method of Kooperberg, Stone, and Truong (1995, Journal of the American Statistical Association 90, 78-94).  相似文献
