Four experiments sought evidence that listeners can use coherent changes in the frequency or amplitude of harmonics to segregate concurrent vowels. Segregation was not helped by giving the harmonics of competing vowels different patterns of frequency or amplitude modulation. However, modulating the frequencies of the components of one vowel was beneficial when the other vowel was not modulated, provided that both vowels were composed of components placed randomly in frequency. In addition, staggering the onsets of the two vowels, so that the amplitude of one vowel increased abruptly while the amplitude of the other was stationary, was also beneficial. Thus, the results demonstrate that listeners can group changing harmonics and can segregate them from stationary harmonics, but cannot use coherence of change to separate two sets of changing harmonics. 相似文献

Understanding the response of any species to climate change can be challenging. However, in short-lived species the faster turnover of generations may facilitate the examination of responses associated with longer-term environmental change. Octopus tetricus, a commercially important species, has undergone a recent polewards range shift in the coastal waters of south-eastern Australia, thought to be associated with the southerly extension of the warm East Australian Current. At the cooler temperatures of a polewards distribution limit, growth of a species could be slower, potentially leading to a bigger body size and resulting in a slower population turnover, affecting population viability at the extreme of the distribution. Growth rates, body size, and life span of O. tetricus were examined at the leading edge of a polewards range shift in Tasmanian waters (40°S and 147°E) throughout 2011. Octopus tetricus had a relatively small body size and short lifespan of approximately 11 months that, despite cooler temperatures, would allow a high rate of population turnover and may facilitate the population increase necessary for successful establishment in the new extended area of the range. Temperature, food availability and gender appear to influence growth rate. Individuals that hatched during cooler and more productive conditions, but grew during warming conditions, exhibited faster growth rates and reached smaller body sizes than individuals that hatched into warmer waters but grew during cooling conditions. This study suggests that fast growth, small body size and associated rapid population turnover may facilitate the range shift of O. tetricus into Tasmanian waters. 相似文献

New phthalimide derivatives were easily prepared through condensation of phthalic anhydride and selected amines with variable yields (70–90%). All compounds (3a–l) were evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv using Alamar Blue susceptibility. slyD encodes a 196 amino acid polypeptide that is a member of the FKBP family of cis–trans peptidyl–prolyl isomerases (PPIases). slyD mutations affect plaque formation by the phage φX174 by blocking the action of the phage lysis protein E. Here we describe the selection of a set of spontaneous slyD mutations conferring resistance to the expression of gene E from a plasmid. These mutations occur disproportionately in residues of SlyD that, based on the structure of the prototype mammalian FKBP12, make ligand contacts with immunosuppressing drug molecules or are conserved in other FKBP proteins. A wide variation in the plating efficiency of φX174 on these E R strains is observed, relative to the parental, indicating that these alleles differ widely in residual SlyD activity. Moreover, it is found that slyD mutations cause significant growth rate defects in Escherichia coli B and C backgrounds. Finally, overexpression of slyD causes filamentation of the host. Thus, among the FKBP genes found in organisms across the evolutionary spectrum, slyD is unique in having three distinct drug-independent phenotypes. 相似文献

Some models of in vitro chromatin assembly suggest a biphasic molecular mechanism. The first phase, nucleosome formation, is comprised of the formation of histone-DNA complexes which mature into a canonical nucleosome structure. The second phase represents the process by which these nucleosomes become properly spaced with a regular periodicity on the DNA. In this report, we examine the role of DNA topoisomerases in the latter phase of chromatin assembly. To study this process, we use a Xenopus laevis cell-free extract, which assembles quantitative amounts of chromatin on circular DNA templates, and the type II topoisomerase-specific antitumor drugs VM-26 and endrofloxicin. Our results suggest that nucleosome formation is unaffected by the presence of VM-26 or endrofloxicin. However, periodic spacing of nucleosomes is inhibited significantly by these drugs. In the absence of proper chromatin assembly, circular DNA molecules are processed into nucleoprotein complexes which are transcribed poorly. Taken together, these results indicate that the antitumor drugs VM-26 and endrofloxicin influence gene expression indirectly by blocking the periodic spacing of nucleosomes. 相似文献

Leuconostoc (Lc.) mesenteroides TA33a produced three bacteriocins with different inhibitory activity spectra. Bacteriocins were purified by adsorption/desorption
from producer cells and reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Leucocin C-TA33a, a novel bacteriocin with a
predicted molecular mass of 4598 Da, inhibited Listeria and other lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Leucocin B-TA33a has a predicted molecular mass of 3466 Da, with activity against Leuconostoc/Weissella (W.) strains, and appears similar to mesenterocin 52B and dextranicin 24, while leucocin A-TA33a, which also inhibited Listeria and other LAB strains, is identical to leucocin A-UAL 187. A survey of other known bacteriocin-producing Leuconostoc/Weissella strains for the presence of the three different bacteriocins revealed that production of leucocin A-, B- and C-type bacteriocins
was widespread. Lc. carnosum LA54a, W. paramesenteroides LA7a, and Lc. gelidum UAL 187-22 produced all three bacteriocins, whereas W. paramesenteroides OX and Lc. carnosum TA11a produced only leucocin A- and B-type bacteriocins.
