Antarctic lakes are characterised by simplified, truncated food webs. The lakes range from freshwater to hypersaline with a continuum of physical and chemical conditions that offer a natural laboratory in which to study evolution. Molecular studies on Antarctic lake communities are still in their infancy, but there is clear evidence from some taxonomic groups, for example the Cyanobacteria, that there is endemicity. Moreover, many of the bacteria have considerable potential as sources of novel biochemicals such as low temperature enzymes and anti-freeze proteins. Among the eukaryotic organisms survival strategies have evolved, among which dependence on mixotrophy in phytoflagellates and some ciliates is common. There is also some evidence of evolution of new species of flagellate in the marine derived saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills. Recent work on viruses in polar lakes demonstrates high abundance and high rates of infection, implying that they may play an important role in genetic exchange in these extreme environments. 相似文献

Samples collected from Lake Fryxell, southern Victoria Land, Antarctica in January 1992 and 1994 were analysed for the abundance
of bacterioplankton and the diversity and abundance of protistan plankton. At the times of sampling, 14 ciliate species and
10 species of autotrophic flagellate were recorded. The samples contained two species of rotifer (Philodina spp.), which formed the first record of planktonic metazoans in the Dry Valley lakes of this region of Antarctica. Bacterial
concentrations ranged between 1.0 and 3.8×108 l-1 in the upper oxic waters increasing to 20×108 l-1 in the anoxic waters. Heterotrophic flagellates decreased in abundance down the oxygenated water column, disappearing completely
at 9 m, and ranged between 0.28 and 7.39×105 l-1 in abundance. Autotrophic flagellates were much more abundant exhibiting a number of distinct peaks down the water column
(1.89–25.3×108 l-1). The ciliated protozoa were very abundant (up to 7720 l-1) in relation to flagellate and bacterial numbers, typical of oligotrophic lakes world-wide. The distribution of the protistan
plankton showed marked zonation, probably in response to the differing salinity and temperature gradients in the water column.
Possible trophic interactions are discussed and comparisons with other continental Antarctic lakes made.

The spatial and temporal distribution of nematodes in two low rate percolating filter bed sewage treatment plants at Carnforth
and Caton, Lancashire, were investigated. Nematodes were abundant reaching densities up to 900 cm−2 of media surface. Numbers decreased down the bed and species composition displayed spatial differences with bed depth. Eight
orders of nematode were represented, members of the sub-family Diplogasterinae and Rhabditinae were particularly common. A
seasonal pattern of abundance was clearly apparent; two peaks occurred, one in May and a second during the winter months.
Lowest numbers corresponded with periods of highest temperature. The demise of the nematodes in the spring was related to
the sloughing of the surface film on the media. 相似文献

The spatial and temporal distribution of the benthic cyclopoid copepods, Acanthocyclops viridis, Acanthocyclops bicuspidatus, Eucyclops agilis, Paracyclops fimbriatus and Macrocyclops albidus in a small eutrophic lake Esthwaite Water, Cumbria was investigated in 1982 and 1983. The behavioural and physiological mechanisms by which these organisms cope with the conditions of hypoxia and anoxia prevalent during seasonal stratification of the lake waters was considered. During stratification all of these species, with the exception of resting stage A. bicuspidatus, disappeared from the profundal zone and were limited to the shallower margins of the lake. None of these copepod species entered the plankton and established planktonic populations, none appeared capable of sustained anaerobic respiration, although all can withstand some degree of hypoxia, and only A. bicuspidatus appeared capable of entering resting stages. The data suggest that in eutrophic lakes species normally found in the profundus deal with anoxia by lateral migration to shallow waters where oxygen is available. 相似文献

1. The ingestion rates of planktonic, mixotrophic cryptophytes in two perennially ice-covered Antarctic lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, were investigated during the summer of 1997–1998.
2. In Lake Fryxell, which is meromictic, ingestion rates increased with depth in November and were highest in a cryptophyte maximum close to the chemocline. In Lake Hoare, which is unstratified and freshwater, there was no significant difference in ingestion rates with depth. In both lakes, the highest ingestion rates occurred in early summer, decreasing in December and January. Ingestion rates varied between 0.2 bacteria cell−1 h−1 and 3.6 bacteria cell−1 h−1 .
3. During November, mixotrophic cryptophytes removed up to 13% of bacterial biomass day−1 and had a greater grazing impact than heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN). As summer progressed, the grazing impact of cryptophytes and HNAN became similar.
4. The maximum depth of cryptophytes in Lake Fryxell was predated by a population of the ciliate Plagiocampa. Plagiocampa had an ingestion rate of 0.13–0.19 cryptophytes cell−1 h−1 . The grazing impact on the cryptophyte community was insignificant. However, the ciliate appeared to be indulging in temporary mixotrophy, sequestering the cryptophytes for a number of weeks before digesting them.
5. It is suggested that mixotrophy is an important survival strategy in the extreme lake ecosystems of the McMurdo Dry Valleys. 相似文献

1. The plankton dynamics of Ace Lake, a saline, meromictic basin in the Vestfold Hills, eastern Antarctica was studied between December 1995 and February 1997. 2. The lake supported two distinct plankton communities; an aerobic microbial community in the upper oxygenated mixolimnion and an anaerobic microbial community in the lower anoxic monimolimnion. 3. Phytoplankton development was limited by nitrogen availability. Soluble reactive phosphorus was never limiting. Chlorophyll a concentrations in the mixolimnion ranged between 0.3 and 4.4 μg L??1 during the study period and a deep chlorophyll maximum persisted throughout the year below the chemo/oxycline. 4. Bacterioplankton abundance showed considerable seasonal variation related to light and substrate availability. Autotrophic bacterial abundance ranged between 0.02 and 8.94 × 108 L??1 and heterotrophic bacterial abundance between 1.26 and 72.8 × 108 L??1 throughout the water column. 5. The mixolimnion phytoplankton was dominated by phytoflagellates, in particular Pyramimonas gelidicola. P. gelidicola remained active for most of the year by virtue of its mixotrophic behaviour. Photosynthetic dinoflagellates occurred during the austral summer, but the entire population encysted for the winter. 6. Two communities of heterotrophic flagellates were apparent; a community living in the upper monimolimnion and a community living in the aerobic mixolimnion. Both exhibited different seasonal dynamics. 7. The ciliate community was dominated by the autotroph Mesodinium rubrum. The abundance of M. rubrum peaked in summer. A proportion of the population encysted during winter. Only one other ciliate, Euplotes sp., occurred regularly. 8. Two species of Metazoa occurred in the mixolimnion; a calanoid copepod (Paralabidocera antarctica) and a rotifer (Notholca sp.). However, there was no evidence of grazing pressure on the microbial community. In common with most other Antarctic lakes, Ace Lake appears to be driven by ‘bottom-up’ forces. 相似文献

The effect of temperature on size and development in three species of benthic copepod 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The effect of temperature on the size and development times of three benthic cyclopoid copepods, Acanthocyclops viridis, A. vernalis and Macrocyclops albidus were investigated within the normal environmental temperature range (5°C–20°C). Adult weight decreased as temperature increased. All three species complete their development at 5°C and development times at all temperatures are presented as curvilinear logarithmic temperature functions. The duration of development decreases as temperature rises. The results are compared with those reported else-where for benthic and planktonic species and the ecological implications are discussed. 相似文献

MBL-MEL, a simple model of ecosystem biogeochemistry, is amended and applied to plant and soil C, 14N and 15N data for the summers of 2001–2003 from Brandalpynten, a maritime high Arctic site on Svalbard following the application
of 15N (99 atom%) as 15NO3-N at or 15NH4-N at concentrations of 1 or 5 kg N ha−1. Variants of this Parent model are also developed to incorporate: temperature dependence into equations describing nutrient
fluxes (Temp model); cryptogams (Cryp model); both features combined (CrypTemp model). Goodness-of-fit (GOF) statistics suggest
that the addition of temperature-dependence improves the utility of models with and without cryptogams: the residual weighted
sums of squares per data point were 5.69, 3.91, 4.31 and 3.93 for the Parent, Temp, Cryp and CrypTemp models respectively.
The application of model selection criteria confirm that the addition of temperature-dependence also improves model generalisability.
Across all models, the principal discrepancies between observation and prediction are associated with the inorganic soil 15N pool. We conclude that models in which fluxes are described using simple equations that can be augmented to include additional
complexity, are an ideal starting point from which the relationship between GOF and model generalisability can be assessed. 相似文献

1. Bacterial production in the 0–30 m water column of Loch Ness was measured using a dual labelling procedure with [3 H] thymidine and [14 C] leucine between May 1993 and June 1994. In most cases the uptake of the two labels did not covary, suggesting unbalanced growth. Rates of bacterial production varied from undetectable to 46.2 μg C l–1 day–1 . Highest production coincided with the period of highest primary production, but carbon derived from this source was insufficient to meet the bacterial carbon demand, which was met by allochthonous humic inputs to the system.
2. Heterotrophic flagellate (HNAN) grazing rates, measured using fluorescently labelled bacteria, ranged between 10.3 and 24.5 bacteria cell–1 day–1 at temperatures between 5 and 15 °C. They removed up to 27% of the bacterial production per day.
3. Heterotrophic flagellate specific growth rates ranged from 0.043 to 0.093 h–1 between 5 and 15 °C, giving generation times of 7.4–16.1 h.
4. bacterial and HNAN abundances were not coupled, but the highest HNAN grazing impact related to a time of high bacterial productivity. 相似文献

The feeding of the cladoceran Daphniopsis studeri on algae and bacteria was investigated under ice in an ultra-oligotrophic Antarctic lake from late autumn (May) to early
spring (October) in 2004. D. studeri fed on both algae and bacteria with estimated filtering rates of 0.048 and 0.061 l ind−1 day−1), respectively. Algae seemed to be the major food resource for the D. studeri population, however at times of low algal densities the bacterioplankton represented an important alternative food resource.
The D. studeri grazing impact on the algal and bacterial standing stock was in general low (0.6–4.6% removed per day), but during the winter
period this organism can remove up to 34% of the bacterial production (BP). At times D. studeri grazing can temporarily have a significant impact on the BP rates, though their impact was relatively low when compared to
viral-induced bacterial mortality in the lake. 相似文献
