Summary It has been suggested by Cohen and Newman (1985) that many of the patterns in published food webs can be derived from a stochastic model in which the species are arranged in a trophic hierarchy (the cascade model). We suggest that, if predators are larger than their prey, a trophic hierarchy can be generated on the basis of body size Empirical evidence from the literature shows that there is a positive relationship between predator and prey size for a range of invertebrates and that predators are usually larger than their prey. Using experimental data on an aquatic food web we show that body size can lead to the type of trophic hierarchy used in the cascade model, suggesting that many food web patterns may be a product of body size. This conclusion is discussed with respect to the limitations of the food web data and the relationship between static and dynamic models of web structure. 相似文献
Low-lying coral reef islands are considered highly vulnerable to climate change, necessitating an improved understanding of when and why they form, and how the timing of formation varies within and among regions. Several testable models have been proposed that explain inter-regional variability as a function of sea-level history and, more recently, a reef platform size model has been proposed from the Maldives (central Indian Ocean) to explain intra-regional (intra-atoll) variability. Here we present chronostratigraphic data from Pipon Island, northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR), enabling us to test the applicability of existing regional island evolution models, and the platform size control hypothesis in a Pacific context. We show that reef platform infilling occurred rapidly (~4–5 mm yr−1) under a “bucket-fill” type scenario. Unusually, this infilling was dominated by terrigenous sedimentation, with platform filling and subsequent reef flat formation complete by ~5000 calibrated years BP (cal BP). Reef flat exposure as sea levels slowly fell post highstand facilitated a shift towards intertidal and subaerial-dominated sedimentation. Our data suggest, however, a lag of ~1500 yr before island initiation (at ~3200 cal BP), i.e. later than that reported from smaller and more evolutionarily mature reef platforms in the region. Our data thus support: (1) the hypothesis that platform size acts to influence the timing of platform filling and subsequent island development at intra-regional scales; and (2) the hypothesis that the low wooded islands of the northern GBR conform to a model of island formation above an elevated reef flat under falling sea levels.
Metabolism is recognized as an important driver of cancer progression and other complex diseases, but global metabolite profiling remains a challenge. Protein expression profiling is often a poor proxy since existing pathway enrichment models provide an incomplete mapping between the proteome and metabolism. To overcome these gaps, we introduce multiomic metabolic enrichment network analysis (MOMENTA), an integrative multiomic data analysis framework for more accurately deducing metabolic pathway changes from proteomics data alone in a gene set analysis context by leveraging protein interaction networks to extend annotated metabolic models. We apply MOMENTA to proteomic data from diverse cancer cell lines and human tumors to demonstrate its utility at revealing variation in metabolic pathway activity across cancer types, which we verify using independent metabolomics measurements. The novel metabolic networks we uncover in breast cancer and other tumors are linked to clinical outcomes, underscoring the pathophysiological relevance of the findings. 相似文献
The primary sequence of the flavin-containing monooxygenase expressed in pig liver has been derived from the nucleotide sequence of cloned cDNA. The derived sequence is composed of 532 amino acids and represents a protein having a molecular weight of 58,952. The complete sequence was obtained from a single clone containing 2070 bases. A second clone, obtained from an independent library, yielded an identical sequence for the 1374 bases present. The amino acid composition compiled from the derived sequence is very similar to that obtained previously from the purified protein. In addition, a 10 amino acid sequence in a peptide formed from the purified protein by digestion with V8 protease exactly matches the derived sequence for residues 309-318. The flavin-containing monooxygenase expressed in pig liver is also expressed in pig lung and kidney as determined by analysis of both microsomal proteins and mRNA. The ratio of mRNA to protein for the enzyme in kidney is about 5 times greater than the same ratio for liver and about twice the ratio for lung. The reasons for these differences are not understood. Southern analysis of genomic DNA indicates that there is a single gene encoding the flavin-containing monooxygenase expressed in pig liver. Therefore, the broad activity of this enzyme in liver appears to be the result of the catalytic diversity of a single protein. 相似文献
A novel, bis-indolylmaleimide, Ro 31-8425, bearing a conformationally restricted side chain, inhibits protein kinase C isolated from rat brain and human neutrophils with a high degree of selectivity over cAMP-dependent kinase and Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase. It also inhibits phorbol ester-induced intracellular events known to be mediated by protein kinase C (p47 phosphorylation in intact platelets, CD3 and CD4 down-regulation in T-cells). Ro 31-8425 inhibited superoxide generation in human neutrophils activated by both receptor stimuli (formyl-methionyl-leucylphenylalanine, opsonized zymosan, IgG and heat aggregated IgG) and post-receptor stimuli (1,2-dioctanoylglycerol and fluoride). The compound also blocked antigen driven, but not IL-2 induced, T-cell proliferation. These results support a central role for protein kinase C in the activation of the respiratory burst and antigen-driven T-cell proliferation. 相似文献
Precipitation of calcium oxalate crystals from a metastable solution can be detected within 10 min if crystalline sodium urate is added at a solid to liquid ratio of 0.1 mM or more.
