The use of plantations to manage extensive tracks of deforested lands in the tropics is a conservation strategy that has recently received considerable attention. Plantation trees can promote seed dispersal by attracting dispersers and creating favorable site conditions, leading to increased germination and establishment of indigenous trees. Subsequently, plantation trees can be harvested for profit or left to senesce, leaving a native tree community. We evaluated the effect of vine, grass, and shrub cutting (weeding) over a 3‐year period on regeneration of indigenous trees subsequent to the removal of plantation softwoods in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Counter to what would be expected if weeding released trees from competition, we found no difference in the total number of stems or in the stems greater than 10 cm diameter at breast height between control and weeded plots; there were more stems greater than 1 cm diameter at breast height in the control plots. For species found in both control and weeded plots, the maximum size of individuals did not differ. At the end of the study, 61 species were found in the control plots and 43 species were found in the weeded plots, and in both types of plots the three most abundant species were the same. The number of species and stems classified as early or middle successional species did not differ between weeded and control plots. The fact that weeding did not promote regeneration of indigenous trees after the removal of plantation trees illustrates the importance of evaluating and field‐testing potential management options. 相似文献

Patients suffering from peripheral vascular disease have been "ultima ratio"-treated with PGI2 at a rate of 5 ng/kg/min for 6 hours a day and 5 consecutive days i.v. 20 of them underwent surgery thereafter as therapy was not sufficient. A histological examination and quantification of vascular tissue revealed that the number of activated smooth muscle cells was significantly lower in treated patients vascular segments than in untreated ones in all the different age groups. A comparable suppression was found in the intima and the media as well. It is thus concluded, that PGI2 inhibits smooth muscle cell proliferation most probably by inhibiting PDGF-release from the platelets and stimulation of smooth muscle cell cAMP. To achieve a more beneficial PGI2-effect at the vascular level, a prolonged PGI2-therapy looks rather promising. 相似文献

Increased concentrations of the endogenous tryptophan metabolite 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK) were measured in the brains of vitamin B6 deficient neonatal rats. Mean concentrations of 3-HK in B6 deficient cerebellum, corpus striatum, frontal cortex, and pons/medulla ranged from 9.7 to 18.6 and 102 to 142 nmol/g of wet tissue at 14 and 18 days of age, respectively. 3-HK was not significantly increased in control neonatal or adult rat brain, vitamin B6 deficient rat brain at 7 days of age, or in brains from adult rats deprived of vitamin B6 for 58 days. The administration of daily intraperitoneal injections of vitamin B6 from the 14th to the 18th day of age decreased the concentration of 3-HK to control levels. 3-HK has been shown by other investigators to produce seizures when injected into the cerebral ventricles of adult rodents. Summary Unmethylated DNA heteroduplexes with a large single stranded loop in one strand have been prepared from separated strands of DNA from two different strains of bacteriophage , one of which has a 800 base pair IS1 insertion in the cI gene. The results of transfections with these heteroduplexes into wild-type and mismatch repair deficient bacteria indicate that such large non-homologies are not repaired by the Escherichia coli mismatch repair system. However, the results do suggest that some process can act to repair such large non-homologies in heteroduplex DNA. Transfections of a series of recombination and excision repair deficient mutants suggest that known excision or recombination repair systems of E. coli are not responsible for the repair. Pre-implantation embryos were infected with the retroviral vector MMCV-neo, which carries the neomycin resistance (neo) gene and the v-myc gene. Three transgenic substrains (M-TKneo 1-3) were derived which stably transmit a single intact copy of the vector. In all of the substrains, expression of the neo gene from the internal thymidine kinase (TK) promoter was detected, with two of the substrains expressing the gene in all tissues analysed. In the third substrain, the vector had integrated on the X chromosome and neo expression varied between different tissues. A second series of transgenic mice were obtained with the retroviral vector SAX, in which the human adenosine deaminase cDNA (ADA) is under the control of an internal SV40 promoter. Four substrains (M-SAX 1-4) were analysed; however, no expression of the ADA cDNA was detected. In all mice, no expression was found of the genes under the control of the viral 5' long terminal repeats (LTRs). In the M-TKneo substrains the vector was hypomethylated irrespective of its expression whereas in the M-SAX mice the vector was hypermethylated. These results demonstrate for the first time that the TK promoter can apparently express a gene in all tissues of adult mice and that retroviral vectors with internal promoters may provide an alternative to DNA injection for the efficient expression of genes in transgenic mice. 相似文献
