Polyglycerolteichoic acid:glucosyl transferase (TAG transferase), one of the three enzymes involved in the pathway leading to the glucosylation of teichoic acid in Bacillus subtilis 168, was investigated. During the early stages of the growth of B. subtilis, TAG transferase is predominantly a soluble enzyme found in the cytoplasm. As growth proceeds, the amount of soluble enzyme decreases and the proportion of insoluble, membrane-bound TAG transferase increases, reaching a maximal value at the close of the logarithmic phase. Data are presented which suggest that these are two forms of the same enzyme, or have some common component. The effects of chaotropic agents, such as sodium trichloroacetate and sodium perchlorate, on the cytoplasmic membrane were also studied. These data show that such compounds can effectively remove the TAG transferase from the membrane in a water-soluble form. A study of some of the physical properties of this solubilized enzyme suggests that there is little difference between the two forms of the enzyme. Experiments are described which indicate that the glucosyl transfer by both the membrane-bound and soluble enzymes is not mediated by lipids.  相似文献

The biosynthesis of the cyanogenic glucosides, linamarin and prunasin, was investigated in linen-flax, peach and cherry-laurel shoots. It was shown that related 2-oximino acids, aldoximes, nitriles and 2-hydroxynitriles were generally good precursors of the aglycone moiety. Studies with double-labelled compounds confirmed the retention of the oximino nitrogen atom from 2-oximinoisovaleric acid and isobutyraldoxime in the biosynthesis of linamarin. A general pathway from amino acids to cyanogenic glucosides involving N-hydroxyamino acids, aldoximes, nitriles and 2-hydroxynitriles is proposed.  相似文献

In the infection of Escherichia coli B(P1) with restricted T1, it was shown that yielder cells consist of both special and nonspecial cells. Special or predetermined yielders occurred only among the earliest yielders. In most instances, yielder-cell formation was most easily explained by assuming that the first step was a chance escape of the restricted phage DNA from the degrading enzyme of the restricting cell.  相似文献

Brief exposure of etiolated maize seedlings to light induces large increases in adenylate kinase and inorganic pyrophosphatase activity of the leaf in the following 48 hr in the dark. Red light is more effective than white or far red light, and far red reverses the effect of red light, indicating phytochrome control. Out of several tested, only these 2 enzymes appear to be coordinately induced, which is consistant with their close functional relationship. For inorganic pyrophosphatase, light treatment induces biosynthesis of a distinctive form of the enzyme characteristic of chloroplasts, readily separable from the enzyme characteristic of etiolated tissue.  相似文献

Plasma fluorogenic corticosteroid and immunoreactive growth hormone levels rose significantly after the intravenous administration of methylamphetamine to healthy young men at various times of the day. The rise in corticosteroids was most pronounced in the evening and was accompanied by an increase in circulating levels of immunoreactive corticotrophin. Oral dexamphetamine also resulted in significant rises in plasma corticosteroids but not in growth hormone. These hormonal changes were accompanied by evidence of mild central stimulation. Though they may be part of an associated and non-specific response, it is more likely that they represent specific effects of amphetamines on centres in the hypothalamus or midbrain controlling secretion of corticotrophin and growth hormone releasing factors.  相似文献
